Can anybody please help me identify the rectifier tube used in this AMX Phono Preamp? The two smaller tubes are 12ax7.  I have no idea what is the tube in the middle.  I called up Phasetron and Edwin told me it can either be 5AR4, 5U4 or 5V4.  Can anybody please confirm this?  Thanks!

Hi Jairus,

Most likely 6sn7...used as tube regulator.
AMX used to employ daw either this or 12au7  as tube reg in their phono stage...(source of info is Andrew of AMX...)

regards.

yes if your integrated can be used as a pre-amp only.  I believe they have to be tweaked to do this.

I'm using Andrew's latest integrated amp, the intergra EL-34s to power my
ol B&W 802 floorstanders. This is a power hungry pair, but the tube amp
works ok with it.

My AMX combo (acoustica 6SN7/12AX7 preamp and 70wpc EL34 monoblock amp) can easily drive at 9 o'clock gain setting my DALI Concept 6 (150wpc, 91 sensitivity). Currently using an ARC preamp and still driving the speakers with ease at 10 o'clock gain set.

Sorry for the delayed answer. Yes we have tube buffer using 6N1P, Russian. Php 9,500.00 SRP
SE EL84 gives out 4.5 watts RMS  per channel. Using a 90+dB sensitive speakers it can get quite loud. Sorry I am not familiar with the wharfedale 8.4 sensitivity. But it will all depend on how you intend to listen to the amp. Recently we sold an SE EL84 to a guy with speakers having sensitivity of 86 dB! Book shelf type at that and he was very happy with the performance and drive.

Please call, I am giving on discount a monoblock EL34, output 60 wattsRMS, I think it can drive those cantons pretty well.

A preamp could change the sound style, or the acoustic signature. So does a change in loudspeaker type.

sir, i just bought an AMX stereo line pre amp last friday (night). And during test ko earlier, i found out na distorted (am not sure if this is the proper term) yung sound pag nasa 6 and up na yung volume nung pre-amp. nde naman malakas volume nung receiver/amp ko, in fact nasa around -50db lang yung volume nya.
Though most likely nde naman aabot ng 6 yung volume setting ng pre-amp ko, (baka nasa 3 lang lagi kasi may sariling volume control naman yung receiver/amp ko), medyo nagaalala lang ako dahil baka eto pa yung maging cause nung iba pang possible failure in the future nung amp.
kindly advise. can i have it replaced rather than fixed? baka kasi mas matagal kung i-fix e, 2 days pa lang naman sakin. thanks

Sir Andrew,
Thanks for modifying my SET6550 integrated amp.  I can now use it as a dedicated pre-amp or integrated amp thanks to the switch you installed.
BTW, I noticed that the pre-out sound characteristic  is a little on the bass side and lacking some detail.  Is this due to my 12au7 Matsucrapa tubes?  When I use it as integrated amp, there is more detail...probably due to the SE 6550 tube.

Regards.

what amp did you connect the pre-out to? There could be an impedance mismatch. Possible.

The preamp you purchased has an output level of 8 volts maximum. Now your HK integrated amp has a sensitivity of 0.5 volts. There you go, when you crank up the volume of the preamp, you will overdrive and clip your HK integrated amp. Easy does it, the AMX preamp isdesigned to drive power amp. We can install an output attenuator if you like.
