tnx sir,

Sound-wise for me triode mode presents a smooth but rather laid back character, great for classics and solo performances, pentodes are great for Jazz, pop music because its got more sizzle than triode mode, ultra-linear is the middle road guy, it is technically a quasi or partial triode. This  is according to my listening analysis only.

Oh another thing I am designing now  a dual mode line stage (pre-amp). You can switch from Pentode operation to triode operation. Only draw back is you get a greater gain on pentode mode, but that could be worked on.

sir:

Triodes and Pentodes,Tetrode are tube types. Ultra-linear is a way of connecting a pentode/tetrode tube in Push pull or single ended configuration. Push-pull is a circuit configuration of connecting triodes or pentodes/tetrode,  using at least two tubes. Single ended uses one tube only in the output. the tube maybe pentode/tetrode or triode. The Pentode single ended may be connected in ultralinear fashion or triode connected, by connecting the screen grid to the plate, the pentode acts like a triode. A triode is a 3 element tube, Plate, Control Grid and Filament/ Cathode. The pentode/tetrode is a five element tube, The Plate, The Screen Grid, the control Grid  and the Supressor grid or beam plates for tettrodes, and filament/cathode. Ultra linear is done by having a tap in the output transformer and the screen grid connected to the tap.. A triode cannot be connected in ultralinear because a triode does not have a screen grid. Ultra-linear is a way of getting triode quality from a pentode tube but more in a more efficient way than a triode. This config was invented by Blumlein and patented  and made popular by Hafler and Keroes of Dynaco fame..  I hope I was of help. Thank you for the question.

Vacuum tubes discount is 10% unless item quoted as net prices, like the 12AX7LPS new arrival. This is a private sale by the way not a public one offered to any who comes. 20% discount on amps and 10% on stock tubes are Cash sale, CC payment is 15% and 5% respectively. This is limited offer, and we seldom do this. The previous time we put on "Sale Prices" tube amps was year 1999 back in Park Square.

May I suggest those who are interested to call directly 7103432 to Robinson's cuz they are updated there. I don't know which might have been already sold each day or even hour passes. Baka yung gusto nyo may nag interest na rin specially the discount. I find the price totally incomparable (very resonable) to the sound it is reproducing.

ano ibig sabihin ng line stage only?

There are two types of preamplifier levels actually 3. A line stage only means the preamp can amplify signals to drive a power amp that has a level output anywhere from 250mv to 750mv. Typical of sound sources are CD, MP3, Tuners, Tape Decks. You need a line stage only preamp for this sound sources. If you need to play a Turntable then you need a magnetic phono preamp stage, this is an additional pre-amplification stage, most commonly used are MM or moving magnet. If your turntable has a MC or moving coil pickup you need an additional MC stage which could be another preamp or a signal transformer. I hope I was able to answer your query. Thank you for your question.

We found another sweet sounding EL84 push pull amp in our stock room at the shop and brought to  Robinsons. It looks like this is the last. 15k less 20% is a steal. It has mind you JJ El84 tubes giving more output than the Sovteks. Measured before clipping is 18 watts. But we conservatively rate this amp at 15 watts per channel.

I own an el84 assembled by AMX. All the time I was exposed to heavy commercialism that big watts equals better amps and sounds. Initially I snob on my 10 watts tube amp but lo and behold when I run it with my Epos 11 which is rated to have 86 sensitivity my jaw dropped. I have a small room power it up not beyond 10 oclock in the volume control. Since Andrew made it to handle 4, 8 and 16 ohms speakers for flexibility to choose speakers and a switch to either have it run in triode or pushpull he suggested to plug the epos into 4 ohms. Guess what? Lalong gumanda! Biwired it and it became more detailed. And these are just 10 watts amps. At 15k w less 20%  YOU MUST BE DEAF NOT TO BUY THEM or el84 is not your kind of sound OR............... I am deaf. Hahaha.
As for why it sounded nice in 4 ohms you guys better ask the guru. There are those who swear by the single ended and some for push pull,  I guess push pull is not bad after all.

I got this el84 last week and really at 9 oclock volume it already filled my small room. Paired it with Dali Concept 1. I want to try tubes amps so I got this el84.

That is very true, with moderately sensitive speakers, things can get loud at at 5 to 15 watts. 90dBSPL is the average sound level at the conductors stand in front of a symphony orchestra. With a 89 dB sensitivity loudspeaker system you only need 2 watts to get to 90 dB in a small room that is plenty loud.

Hi andrew,

Any chance that you can come up with a differential amplifier like this one? http://www.vacuumstate.com/fileupload/dpa300B_brochure_lo_rez.pdf

Something similar would be great, if yes let's talk :)

I have read this item before. Although he does not say it aloud, this so called differnential amp is nothing new. This are two SE amp connected in bridge mode, One SE amp in opposite phase with another amp. You double the voltage output, thus higher power yet it retains the SE character, that is if they are perfectly balanced which is not difficult to attain. I built something similar to this for my friend in Oxford, but using el34 se, BRIDGE CONNECTED, back in 2004 pumping about 30 watts to the loudspeaker. It the strictest of sense a differential is push pull but not in its classical sense. One channel is positive going and the other is negative going, so you add up the two, or you can strap the inputs and series connect the outputs or invert one side and antiphase connect the outputs. This is done in proaudio when we bridge two channels of amplifiers into one workhorse and most car amplifiers are connected this way so you get a larger swing from a 12 volt Dc supply.
