DEAR AMX: I'm mildly intrigued by the "stimulus-priced" OVERTURE 6550. I have no decent sound system but I have a Denon universal player and an AKG headphone. Kindly tell me what speaker brand and specs will you recommend for this tube amplifier, and second, is the 6550 useful too for private listening thru the AKG?

When stating a suggestion for the speaker please cite bookshelf sizes only, or something whose dimensions can at least be placed even inside an Orocan chest drawer compartment. My home is too small. As well, please cite dimensions for the 6550, how does it compare from two hollow blocks sitting side by side?

Finally, can the promo-priced Overture be valued at best, at 25% less if paid in cash and do you deliver to Cavite province? Will be gratefull for your closest consideration.

If I may make suggestions...

How about the name Sveta? SVETA is a Russian female name that means Light. I think this will give it a Russian identity.

Aparently, Svetlana is also a female name that means light. Is there by any chance that the 6C33C tubes to be used are Svetlanas?

as for the color scheme, I would like Sveta to dress in Chrome and RED (as in USSR communist Red) to blend in with the theme. :) Although I have read in this thread that Sir Andrew can customize the finish to customer's specs, I wish the production model would be made as such so I don't have to pay a premium price :) Hehehe baka-sakali lang...

Even before hearing it, I am 80% sold on this amp already, with the remaining 20% to be determined by the price. I already own 2 AMX amps and a preamp all bought 2nd hand and I am very happy with them. Im sure this new one will not disappoint.

May ETA na ba?

Just wanted to thank you Sir Andrew for the wonderful little 5 watt SE el84 amp I got from Kinetic Audio last week. I was so pleasantly surprised how loud it can get, it easily drives my 90 db floorstanders. Especially after trying out my dear friend Oweidah's generous gift of NOS tubes (Matsus**ta and Amperex), it's everything I ever wanted from my audio -- airy, detailed, natural-sounding with great imaging. They would have saved me a lot of unnecessary gear expenses if I had found them earlier. But all's well that ends well. (It's even a terrific match with my analog source-- Gr-1 TT to a Pro-ject Phono box).

Thanks again and kindest regards.

@oweidah -- Many thanks again bro.

Sorry sir, CD buffer is still out of stock. We hope to introduce a new one in the very near future, using only one tube 1/2 of a twin triode/channel and  running at lower voltage. We are still doing some listening tests.

Sorry did not get the meaning of YGPM.

Oh BTW the Devil Amp had been playing for a couple of weeks in Pioneer and a foreigner fell in love with it. But its not yet for sale, kasi test run. That devil amp sure runs as hot as hell at 24 watts /channel class A.> Temp rose to 300 deg C Its back in the lab for some modifications. I could not post here in pinoy dvd , kasi i became unfamiliar with the new layout. Nawala ang tube and audio forums. Puro DVD and HT ang nasa directory. I just tried the search box so I am here. I thought they have removed the thread altogether.

Ano ba sir andrew ang best place to start with tubes? CD buffer? SET? PP? Please help a noob.

To answer your question, let me base on what I have observed.
. It all depends on the money you want to spend first.

1.. low budget: CD buffer, will let you experience "tube warmth" if your ear is sensitive to this peculiar quality.

2. SET is ultimate tube sound enjoyment if you have high sensitivity loudspeakers, that is 92dB or higher. The higher the better. Horn loaded, with 2 or 3 watts, fantastic.

3. PP if you have those difficult to drive "modern" inefficient loudspeakers with tons of crossovers, large capacitors high wattage ratings, bought accidentally or otherwise, a hand me down or got in bargain.

4. PP if you are "the rock guy pump up the volume, hey neighbor I've got great stereo, lets party-type of
listener, couple them with high efficiency horn loaded speakers, possibly bi-amp them, and help it with a little more bass with 18 inch woofers. Exciting!

5. if you are the private type, "its my music kind of Guy, in my own little private world of music", then get on with tube headphone amp. It's is not very expensive.

So , different strokes for different folks. and I respect every man's choice.  ;D

Raygun,
Welcome to the el84 club. with a set of high sensitive speakers the el84 can be a giant killer too. Latter in life when you get to listen to some 1 watter amp on a set of those high sensitive drivers you might say to yourself "why on earth do I even need a 5 for that matter. But for now enjoy them. Say that gave me an idea why don't we form an el84 amx club where in we can share our experiences? Syempre, si Andrew ang ninong. He takes care of the coffee pag may meet sa shop nya. Hahaha. Game ka ba Andrew?
Raygun, have you tried AB ing your project with andrew's tube phono preamp yet? Tell me if you are going to do that and I'll be there.

Am I on the right track in my quest for a good sound?
This is what I ask myself when I was contemplating buying my first tube amp. What makes them different? Technology wise I am challenge but one thing for sure I like to listen to live musice whether jazz or classical music (UP conservatory or other schools having their recitals or concerts are venue to get oneself familiar with them sound. If you have the money go to CCP or a bar gig). Therefore, the stereo hardware set up  should come close to those natural timber and sound from the instruments will be my best bet..... Therefore the only way to choose them is using your own pair of ears and choose the combination that you LIKE. Not your friends nor the sales rep. It takes some patience and it sure is a journey in discovering what you really like. This "like" changes also in time and also depends on one's mood.
What makes the parts different between the AMX and the branded ones. I guess there are not much difference because they can be sourced from the same manufacturer if you want to.
What makes the design different? I guess most of the tube manufacturers were using 70 years old tried and tested designs. I don't think there are new designs maybe inovation of the design but the basic designs were from the '30s.
Assembly? I have no doubt with Filipino skills.
Marketing? I think this is where it makes a big difference. The branded imported ones have great marketing strategies.
AB ing? You try it yourself. Don't be shock when you found out that your very expensive gears are not much far away from the AMX. (my experience) At times a big frustration when you found out the AMX brewed sounded better.
Economics? Is spending thousands of pesos more (branded) worth the sound?
Is it proper to compare them? I guess only those who are into audio using their ears with a budget will be more than willing to compare them. And these are those who says to themselves "I don't care what brand or who made it as long as it sounded good..... and within my budget".
Can an AMX tube be as expensive as the branded ones? Why not. Give andrew the specs of using silver wires, 5,000 peso plus per capacitors, NOS tubes etc and you got an expensive gear. But will that sound be worth the money? Your choice again.
Is Andrew deaf? Now that's very important question. if the people behind an amp does not know the difference between a good violin and a bad violin sounds we got a problem. I ask Andrew myself how does he keep up to the technologies to mentain or improve the sound of the amps and he said......."I go to CCP to remind myself of the timber and sound of the instruments" I personally heard an interview with andrew by a media man on why and how he got started into manufacturing amps. He said " I basically love music." Seems far from the question but a good answer.
Is the amp tweakable? I once had a dream of owning a very expensive gold plated amp. my biggest fear was is it worth the money and can I tweak it latter? Or what if a cheaper one comes along and outperform my expensive ones? that gave me a big dilema cuz I am assuming that these foreign branded ones were already the ultimate and the reading from the audio magazines have shown they are up there in the scale........but what if I want to change the sound a little bit do i have the courage to tweak it? What if a cheaper one sounded good also? Are my ears deaf or are the writers being paid to do a good write up. I concluded that I should get a tube that will have the opportunity to tweak and yet not costing an arm and a leg. One day it made me feel so good when I found out that the very expensive amp that I was dreaming of was also being sold in Andrew's store (seond hand). I ask the sales rep there what's the story behind it and he said it was formerly owned by a Japanese guy who didn't like the sound and requested andrew to tweak it but after listening to one of AMX model he decided to trade it in for an AMX. I never made an offer or even try to ask how much he is selling it for.

Am I still on the right track?
