Devant 42MEL260 3D TV Review and Impressions
« on: Mar 05, 2012 at 07:39 AM »

It's the top most one in this pic...

Comes with 2 PR 3D Glasses, oversized enough that my own glasses fits comfortably in them. It was easy to assemble the stand on the panel.

It's Devant's first 3D TV, and bought it @ Automatic Center's exhibit sale at SM North EDSA for just Php 49,950 @18mos 0% + Pay first payment after 3 months w/ our BPI Credit Card.

Here's my initial impressions.  I watched Despicable Me, Night at the Museum, and the free I am Number Four Blu-ray (c/o Nextbase) for review

Pros:

Thin
Bright
Lightweight
Matte Screen
Thin bezel
Sharp
Rich colors
Cheap, really cheap for a 42' 3D TV
Improved Media support and menu interface for USB input device

Additional glasses can be purchased at Devant's Service center
Full Support for HDMI 1.4
4xHDMI, USB, Component, Composite, Cable ports

Cons:

Remote IR Receiver is on the left side, seems unidirectional too.
Very simple menu and adjustment settings. Nothing fancy, even our 10year old 55" RPTV had more setting adjustment.
Speakers have to be in full when HDMI Audio fed, too loud for everything else, like TV/Cable.
No Wifi/LAN port (The Sony KDL-46EX723 my sister just bought had a whole lot of extras, but locally it's being sold for 2.5x the price...)
No main off/on switch, seems. (I haven't really found out if there is one)
60hz only
You really need an HDMI 1.4 cable...it doesn't come with one.

3D:

Well, the package from Automatic Center comes with NEXTBASE's NBR-20, Bluray player, but it's not a 3D player. (But its cool though, touch controls like an Xbox 360S)  I thought I could use my HP Pavillion Dv7 w/ PowerDVD 12... couldn't get Dispicable Me 3D going as expected... seems to be I really need an HDMI 1.4 cable... or download Half SBS 1080p content off torrent sites...  Anyway, more to follow... when I finally figure it out.

TV Cable:

We're using Destiny Cable, so there's nothing really spectacular to show off on the set there.

What's next:

Transferring my old Xbox 360 + HD DVD on it. (currently my Xbox is connected to my main PC's display, an HP w2207h... while my only HD DVD system is on a newer Xbox 360 S on our 55" RPTV).

does it support DTS when using the usb at the back?

Tried running UP 3D via USB w/ DTS soundtrack via DMP (Digital Media Player) ng TV, didn't output the sound.  I'm converting the track to AC3 to see if it really is not possible or I may have a bad file.

I think you have to use the nextbase bluray to be able to play mkv file with DTS sound ....the tv itself does not support DTS , i was able to test my 1 tera hardisk in one of the display of ansons.

Plugged in my HP Dv7 and played 3D SBS titles through the HDMI... works great

Tried UP, Transformers 3, Avatar, soon will check TinTin and Hugo..  (UP has the best 3D implementation so far)

Played NBA 2K12 on my Xbox360 too, in 3D awesome...  and confirmed that the reel3D glasses from movie houses works on this TV.

1920x1080 output was spot on edge to edge, no adjustment was required (Although the set's menu system has a whole category dedicated to adjusting the pixel orientation.)

Got one last week from Robinson's Pergola. I agree with the PROs and CONs that bro Bravoexo said. I have SBS videos and played them on through my Popcorn hour. The 3D image seem to be lacking. It somehow shows some shadows. Same goes for the Blu-ray 3D "The Universe." Thoughts on how to remedy this?

BTW, the 3d glasses from CDRking works!  :)

It seems to really depend on the title...  Pixar's Up 3D looks great.... seems like live action 3D titles like Clash of the Titans....are not as good as rendered 3D titles (like Cars, Megamind, Despicable Me...etc)  But I think that's a whole other topic...

Am using an LG BD-660 3D Blu-ray player now... for both downloaded and 3D Bluray/reg Bluray media...  and and Xbox360 for gaming... (havent transplanted my HD-DVD player though...)

I think the new Skyworth 3D TV is a better bargain... the only advantage this have over that is the 4th HDMI port...

I agree, the Skyworth E96 42inch is a better bargain.

                 Skyworth     Devant
Model          42E96         42MEL260
Size            42in            42in
LED             Yes            Yes
3D              Yes             Yes
2Dto3D        Yes             No
TruMotion    120             60
Glasses        4                2
InternetTV   Yes             No
(Skyworth wifi adapter sold separately and web browser does not support high versions of flash therefore cannot load youtube videos)
Skype         ?                 No
(Skyworth has a free cam, I know its for gaming but not yet confirmed if also for Skype)
Price           40k(SnS)      36k ?

For 3d blu ray ratings - http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/search.php?action=search&search=reviews&other_bluray3d=1&sortby=overall

4k difference, but with the features, ill still go for Skyworth.
