I bought this yesterday, since I was surprised that there was a "Special Edition" Disney on R3 that was released ahead of an R1 version, which hasn't even been announced.
Packaging: Black original Amaray case; single page colored insert - Chapter stops on one side, List of Special Features on the reverse side
Picture Quality: The package says it's "brilliantly restored", Full-frame (the film's original aspect ratio is 1.37:1)
Sound: Dolby Digital 5.1 (English, Mandarin, Korean, Mandarin); Dolby Surround 2.0 (Thai)
Special Features:
1. "The Search For Jiminy Cricket" - A game you can play with your remote control. You answer moral questions (since with Jiminy missing, you are Pinocchio's substitute conscience
), then look for Jiminy in different areas. I stopped after finding his hat.
2. "A Wish Come True: The Making of Pinocchio" - 5 minute documentary only, looks like a very old production which wasn't even cleaned up before being added to this DVD.
3. Sing-Along Songs: "Figaro & Cleo", "Little Wooden Head", "I'm a Fool Having Fun", "I'm a Fool With Fire". Unrestored, with flashing/highlighting song lyrics.
4. Storyboard to Final Film Comparison: A split screen film/storyboard comparison of the scene where Gepetto completed Pinocchio and started making him dance around. 4 minutes long.
5. Original 1940 Theatrical Trailer (1:40)
That's it. It's not really all that "Special", so it wouldn't surprise me if they came out with a "Platinum Edition" with new and better features sometime in the future.
