other than the Oppo, what is the next best BD player that:
- plays region free bluray and dvd
- has 3d capability
- plays mkv

I read about that hardware modified Sony BDP 790, supposedly at par or surpasses Oppo. Price is not cool (about 600 US dollars). Can't remember the website but it also sells Panasonic, Yamaha, LG and Toshiba 2d and 3d players, all hardware modified. Search at amazon for region free bluray players.

when you say par do did you mean it can play all regions of BDs/DVDs, play MKV, and has 3D capability, and still be at par with  Oppo on video quality?

Actually kaya mahal dahil sa hardware modification, which they claimed is not affected by firmware updates. The mod chip alone is expensive, coupled with labor for modification. According to reviews, Sony 790 is an excellent upscaler (for dvd) and also excellent for BD. It can also handle 4k upscaling 9if you have a 4k projector or tv (very expensive). It also plays sacd but not dvd audio.

I would also like to know among the BD player brands like Sony, Panasonic, Pioneer and  Samsung and the model number. I think i need to have a dedicated BD player besides my PS3.
