Is 3D just hype?
« on: Jul 14, 2012 at 01:00 AM »
I just wanted to post this question and would like to get the feedback of PDVD members.  3D technology has been around since the 80's or probably even earlier. Every time I watched a full length 3D movie I always experience a big headache when leaving the movie theater, hence i have avoided the recent films on 3D.

Only time I enjoyed 3D or what they call 4D are the Universal Studio rides - Harry Potter, Spiderman, etc.  but those are just short ones, likely less than 10 minutes.  I'm not sure if the advancement in 3D technology improves the viewing experience compared to the old 3D movies, which were really unpleasant for me.

I'm likely going to buy a 3D TV since it is becoming a standard.  Reason I'm asking for comments is if it is worth investing on the other HT components - such as AVR, media players, and even the media contents  that support 3D.

What's your experience on the new 3D TV's? Do you think you'll be using it regularly, or just another another feature that you will only use when your equipment is new?

Nah, 3D is there to stay. I went the other way though. i started getting the more dated, but affordable AVR first, with a 2D LED, then a 3D projector and I say its worth keeping 3D as an option.

While it is true that there are still fewer titles in 3D, there are NMT players that can do 2D/3D conversions at the player itself with several 3D intensity options for depth.

If you have kids, grab smaller sized glasses that will fit them well. and get just enough glasses for your setup.

3D is here to stay, might as well enjoy it given the narrowing incremental price difference, make sure you shop around before spending, and read up on feedbacks. But likely, you'd spend 5% watching 3D but its just nice to know, if and when, you want to go 3D, its there  ;D

happy 3D hunting.

Try both active and passive 3D models to see which one you prefer. Most people would choose one over the other. Flicker-sensitive people tend to prefer passive, while detail-sensitive people may prefer active.

Imo, 3D is good to have for an occasional movie. I don't want to watch everything in 3D though.

A long but maybe helpful read:

3D has become a standard feature for new HDTV, AVRs and NMTs anyways.  There's no significant premium to having it anymore.

this is one of the reason i'm asking if it's just a hype, pati kasi sa 32-inch and some smaller PC monitors sinasama yung 3D feature ... not sure if you can appreciate it even with a 42-inch TV ... baka kailangan malaki talaga

I was scouting a new TV with my kids and was offering them the 3D capable ones. They tried a around 3 different models.  We also watched a movie in 3D in local cinema.  Their reaction is that they don't like it and prefer watching 2D.  I guess 3D is only good at theme parks like Disneyland and Universal Studios. Most of the 3D movies are not produced with 3D in mind.  Though I heard 3D TV is good for gamers but we are not gamers.  Still depends on the user.  Just sharing our experience.

i have a panasonic 42ut30 which is 3d capable. Masaya manood ng 3d content. My favorite was the IMAX under the sea. Pero isang movie lang kaya ko per session. After that parang masakit na sa ulo. Tsaka 2 lang free ko na 3d glasses kaya 2 lang ang masaya manood. Yung iba, malungkot.
So, it's a nice bonus but not a necessity to me. I can live without it.

i agree with the gentleman above who said "it's a nice feature, when you have it, you have it, and when you need it it's there" its totally optional but its nice having it.

you only use it when you need it :)

I think 3D is bound to stay only because manufacturers knew it has a market and it is the next step after buying hdtvs. But great 3D films come far and between and animated films are still the best. Its like ps3 vs xbox, 3D's existence will probably be determined and dictated by the materials that will be made available to the consumers. Personally, I enjoy 3D but not on a prolonged basis kasi nakakapagod. Mababaw man ako but I actually swayed to avoid it when Captain America threw his mighty shield at the screen!!! He he he!!!

I thought it was gimmicky, too...  til I saw Despicable Me in the theater and Pixar's UP using my 3D TV.  And then I played NBA2K12 on my Xbox in 3D...whoa...

3D is definitely here to stay. On the other hand, 3D glasses aren't. Toshiba is already running local commercials for their glass-less TVs and laptops.

^ Wasn't there a cellphone that featured glassless 3D? LG was it? Also, there are several flat panels around greenbelt/glorietta area that features glassless 3D. You have to stand in a sweet spot to appreciate the 3D contents and moving away from the spot distorts the image giving it a very limited range for viewers.

The problem with 3D is there is NO STANDARD. Each manufacturer has their own way of implementing their glasses. Which means you cant use a Panny glass for a Samsung one. And there is the problem with different technologies. Passive or Active and the older colored ones.
The active glasses are way too expensive.

So for short, it might stay but it will not pick up until the manufacturers learn to make it standard.

Those are commercial units, I'm guessing. Toshiba's are for the consumer market. The laptop uses tracking software that follows your eyes. Not sure what the TV uses but up to 3 people seated side by side can watch in 3D.

For the recent 3d tv models, as far as I know, Samsung and Panasonic adhered to a 3D standard and have glasses that are inter-compatible...  don't know much of the details though and if it will spur a trend...  at least they've started doing so :)

I had a series 7 Samsung 3D tv bought last Dec. 2010 and their active shutter glass are IR connected to the tv. Samsung's newer 3D tv uses bluetooth technology.. Even Samsung's compatibility of their old and new 3D tv is a question,IMHO...

Some can be use with other brand some not. Like PJ I believe panasonic active shutter can be use with epson and vice versa correct me if im wrong.  ;D ;D

Sa pag kakaalam ko same lang price ang mga active tv shutter glass so why ka pa bibili ng ibang brand if meron naman sarili ang brand na binili mo IMHO.

Panasonic came out with RF/Bluetooth type Active Shutter 3D Glasses last year which are better than the previous Infra Red type..

Mas maganda rin presyo of course.

3D hype or not?  Depends on how much 3D content you have.  But it's getting a standard feature anyways so why not.

I agree, content is still the king. Even if they come up with a 3d standard, content will still dictate its success. To date, there are only a little over 100 3d blu-ray movies you can find. Its growing slowly but I think people are getting more and more interested w/ 3D so, no . . . its not a hype anymore.

Optoma HD33 also has RF emitter, it is superior than IR in a sense that its 3d glasses don't require a line of sight to sync hence, less cross-talk.

3D porn, 3D doc, IMAX stuff, Space/NASA stuff, Science stuff, Animals/Insects/Bugs, 3D TV show, 3D dancing, 3D sports, most likely the London Olympics too - if you know where to find them, they are available.

Since there is no more significant premium to buying 3D functionality (because what you get nowadays is primarily a very good quality 2D TV), it's cool to have.

The 2012 glasses of samsung are said to be compatible with 2012 panasonics and vice versa.  They are starting to pioneer a 3d standard.  There are a couple of reasons that they would do so pero personally, I'd stick with first party glasses.  Samsung glasses are still cheaper last I checked at local shops....   can't say they are better though as I have no samples to compare with critical viewing. I like the design of the pana glasses though and they usually come with cases  :)
