media player for audio set up
« on: Aug 27, 2012 at 01:31 PM »
Mga bro,

Currently I have a cd player then connected to an external DAC then to amplifier.  I am planning to use a media player instead of cd player. I have already ripped my cd's into flac. Naghahanap pa lang ng media player na pwedeng lagyan ng Hard drive. Basically I will be using an optical or coaxial connection from media player to external DAC. Kindly give your recommendations. Thanks in advance.

Cocktail Audio and Olive are probably the most available options.

You can also use Cambridge Audio NP30, wala syang HDD dock but you can connect your external HDD via it's front and back USB connections... USB connection supports upto 96/24 lossless files.

Kung CD pinanggalingan ng music files mo, you can use ordinary media players. They have digital outputs for external DAC. Mede8er ang gamit ko dati sa ganyang set-up.

And since you already have a PC, another option is to use your PC as a source connected to Musiland USB DAC which supports up to 24/192hz resolution.

I was in this same boat sometime ago then found that I already have a very capable and user friendly media player -- my laptop. Try exploring this option if you have a pc or laptop.

thanks Bro. I will check the Cocktail, peru young olive masyado ng mahal.

Bro,

Mas cheaper yung suggestion ni sir Nelson and sir warmaster... Unless wala kang laptop or computer.

Mas mura din ang media player + DAC kesa sa Cambridge Audio NP30. Unless yung gagamitin mong Dac is more than 15k.

Cambridge audio already has a builtin DAC which is really good so you dont need to connect to one.

Bnew of CA NP30 is around 23k+ according to 5th Ave.

Yung cocktail nadinig ko na sya, and magandang media player din sya. With built in AMP pa para direcho connect ka na sa speakers, of course yung level na kaya nyang i drive...

I second the recommendation of warmaster, PC software playback using JRiver Media Center.  Been using JRMC for over 5 years, great software.

Do you guys know if theres a DAC with resolution of 32/384 that has optical input?

Balak ko sana gawin source yung cd player ko using spdif, convert the signal to analog using the high resolution DAC tapos amplify it using my tube  amp.

TIA

Just one question sir, why do you want a 32/384 when it's difficult to even get a 24/192 format?

Courage, im not after the input, im after the high resolution conversion. I'm not sure about this but im thinking, the DAC will upscale the input pcm signal therefore will produce a smoother and more accurate analog signal.

I'm not sure about that.. Some people say that upscaling results to better SQ some people say otherwise...

During my testing, i have tried upscaling lower resolution(Mp3) to at least 24/192 but i hear no difference.. anyway maybe i dont have golden ears to hear any difference...Ohh i'm also a DAC user, REGA which is a non Upsampling DAC.. So far results are very very good no matter what sample rate i throw to it..

But anyway M2Tech young has very good reviews i'm not sure if there's a local store that carry it but you can ask, maybe they can source it for you.. good luck sir..

Check out Architectural Audio in Greenbelt 5.  I know they carry the product lines of M2Tech.

If you are into Mac products, get a Mac mini + external DAC.

It's really a balancing act, as typical upsampling does not really "improve" the signal quality. Contrary to popular belief, an upsampler cannot get data out of thin air -- the output waveform remains rough and jagged if the source is of a low resolution (unless you apply processing). Though the reclocking does help reject jitter, resampling can also add errors in the process of interpolation (though this would normally be beyond the dynamic range of 16-bit audio if done in 24-bit or higher). A good ASRC/DSP chip and logic would have to be used to minimize errors in this process (especially if you want the DAC to perform well with 24-bit data as well).

On the upside: The higher sampling frequency does shift the Nyquist frequency upwards, which makes the aliasing easier to manage with simple filters. Most DACs also perform better at certain sampling rates, so you may be able to keep things running near the ideal rate with upsampling (most DAC chips do have internal oversampling however, to address this even without external upsampling).

The optical SPDIF connection is often limited to 24/96 due to low availability of receivers that support high signalling rates (though there are some that do indeed support upto 24/176 or 24/192 over this connection).

If you're after the upsampling numbers (not that it really matters), the Accustic Arts DAC 1 Mk4 (now phased out, afaik) claims to be able to upsample your redbook discs to 66/1536.
