We have tested Yamaha, Onkyo, and Denon side by side. Denon still sounds better. Some of our dealer friends have attested that Denon really sounds better. You can try other dealers like AVDI and Audio Den. Audio Den has been an Onkyo dealer but seem to prefer Denon since they tested it side by side.

Listening room will be biased because they are the one bringing in the Yamaha receivers.

You can also check the latest what hifi where Denon 1602 got 5 Stars for home theater and stereo music.

Another good specs to check is the weight of the AVR. Denon is one of the heaviest because it uses overbuilt components, transistors, etc. to achieve good sound.

moewpow,
busy pa ako ngayon, di ko alam kung ako lang ang working student dito and the youngest, Im 24. enrollment kasi sa school. After two weeks siguro n ako titingin ulit ng mga set-up. Na test ko na Onkyo 494 sa Upscale park square ok naman, 55 watts pero malakas na din, but using front speaker alone parang weak yung bass using floor standing PSB speakers, kailangan mo talaga ng subwoofer dito. Denon 1602 di ko pa natest.

sa mga GURU:

Bakit mas mahal ang gold color kesa black AVR?
madali bang mag-fade ang gold o ang black?

blued,
Anong course mo?  :)

I tested (partially) the Denon 1802 Ok naman, but I'll have to bring CDs and DVDs familiar to me (as was advised by everyone here).

Ano ang comment ng taga Upscale about the Onkyo. It seems that people are recommending the Denon over Onkyo these days. Do you think it's a marketing thing? Eh alam ko sa internet review, parang mas walang problema ang Onkyo.  ???

I wanted to test the Onkyo 696. Do they have it installed sa Upscale Park Square?

BSECE.

Nannie of UPSCALE said mas ok ang ONKYO in movies and music, my friend has ONKYO 575x sa upscale binili so far walang namang problema, speakers nya B&W L,C,R and Acoustic Energy sa surrounds. ONKYO 696 ang nakaset-up ngayon sa upscale. Here's upscale tel. no. 819-7284

Ok...thanks. In case you're interested, Audio Den (tel. 4307221 look for Manny) has a Denon 2802 setup, if you want to test it. They might have a 1602 (seems like it, but I didn't ask).

almondski and buled!

hahaha! Now there's three of us. We should have something like a 'Pinoy DVD buyers' EB'!  ;D

You know guys, why don't we buy these machines from say the
same dealer (even if it does not have to be the same brand/model)? I think we can get a BIGGER DISCOUNT if we do it this way! Parang volume order... What say you? :D

Thnks meowpao , what a nice idea but i was living overseas so i have no luck joining you guys. Just want to know your thoughts. I think ill go for onkyo 565, they are all good AVR's so it's just depend on market strategy to make a certain product to be no.1.

Ahh... sayang.  :)

As of now, I'm scratching out the Yamaha 1200 from my list. Though the specs look really good, its still way too expensive. I think the Onkyo 595 seems lacking in some features (like its not ready for HDTV and Progressive Scan, if I remember reading it right) and for the price, its close to the Denon 1802, which got good recommendations from people here and has more features.

So now, I'm probably going to pick the Denon 1802 or the Onkyo 696. :)

Meowpao,

I was in the same predicament 3 weeks ago. Denon 1802 or Onkyo 696?  The Onkyo was a little more expensive by about 3k-ish.

Here are the things that swayed me to buy the 696:
 1. Available in Black
 2. Pre-outs for all channels including surrounds.
 3. On-Screen-Display
 4. Better Remote

I was set to buy the 1802, then ebtgmike just had to mention the 696.  Now that I have it, I'm pleased with it.  Very neutral and clean sounding(i.e. no hiss.)

If you wanna hear it in a home setting, drop by my house.  You'll get an audio treat, though for video I'm currently using a pathetic 21" TV. :-[  Anybody selling a decent 32+ inch TV relatively cheap?  ;)

Ahh... do you think your TV is pathetic? Wait'll you hear about MINE!  Eight-year old 14" (READ: FOURTEEN INCH) Panasonic MONO TV! Wahhooo!  :o Imagine having a high tech HT system and watching it in MINI form! hahahaha!

I've been putting off buying a bigger TV since I've been waiting for these Plasma and HDTVs to come out, and hopefully, become more affordable!  ;D

Same thing with videos... I have VHS, but I skipped LDs and VCDs (same reason as above!). And now that DVDs are affordable and 'formats' have just about stabilized (both hardware and discs)... ATTACK!!!!  :D

Maybe a trip to Pier would help you find your need at a price that you want.

Examples:

Toshiba 29" flat screen- P13k
Sony Wega 25" flat screen- P12k
Sony Widescreen 34" with PIP- P15k

Good Luck!  8)

Hi meowpao,

How much again was the Yamaha 1200?  Did you also ask about the 2200?  I've only seen these at the Listening shops, undoubtedly a more expensive source than the general appliance stores.

TY for any info.

comfoosed,

The Yamaha 1200 is around P46500+. Its too new, and thus the price. But they said they were willing to give a disount (Listening stores). But still, too pricey for me.  :-[

There is no sign there basta just enter the gate to South Harbor and as you drive along on both sides you would see the different TV sets na.  Park and browse around nalang.

Good Luck and Ingat ka don! 8)

Where are you located ba? Ok ba talaga if I check out your system? BTW, what're your speakers? :D

I live in Capitol Golfer's Villas.  That's in Diliman Quezon City, near Ayala Heights/Celebrity Sports/Channel 13. Yes, you are truly welcome.

I use Norh 4.0's for my LCR and surround speakers and an SVS 20-39PC for my sub.  All connected to my Onkyo 696.

Did I hear you say "Norh What?"  There is another forum dedicated to these speakers here.  They're made in Thailand and are quite unique.

My 21" TV is also a Panasonic Mono TV. :D And I don't even have VHS!  ;)

NIRVBLAKR,
Thanks for the heads-up on the Pier TV's. That 34" Sony widescreen seems awfully tempting.

I'm a bit uneasy about getting there because my dad previously got 3 TV's and they didn't last more than 4 months. He has "officially warned" me, so baka I might get the dreaded "Sabi ko na sayo e!"

Pep- Maybe it just depends on where you buy your TV set and where.  I just recommended it coz I bought 3 29 incher Sonys (jap surplus of course) and its been 3 years now and no problems yet.  Maybe its just a matter of chance.  ;D

Both are okay but tell your friend to wait for Denon AVR-1602 with Dolby PRo Logic II. It will be better.

Stopped by ED last week. I'm also (eagerly) waiting to test the 1602. They said it'll be around 23,000.

If that doesn't sound good, the Onkyo 575x is selling for only 20k++ at that store in Park Square closest to the Glorietta entrance (I forgot the name...)
