Whats the advantage of having all that resolution ? Looks like this is going to be like the "Receiver Wars" in the 70's where the audio companies tried to outgun each other with more and more powerful receivers everytime a new series came out,  then suddenly ended as everyone stopped making big receivers as it was not that profitable

Sharp does not know what the future of television is.  If they did, they wouldn't be the near-bankrupt company that they are now.

Sharp 8K LCD TV Prototype - CES 2012

Not to be outdone in the video resolution department, Sharp had an abundance of great TVs on display, including its own 4K prototype. However, Sharp upped the notch even further by bringing its 85-inch 8K resolution LCD TV prototype that it had developed in conjunction with Japan's NHK broadcasting to CES for the first time.

Sharp's 85” 8K TV

Sharp did not have many new products to show at IFA but it did not matter much because they had brought their 85-inch TV, developed in collaboration with Japanese NHK that has also produced the video material shown on the TV.

When was the first 8K LCD really made?  In May 2011.

First exhibited to the public at NHK’s Science & Technology Research Laboratories in Tokyo from May 26 to 29, 2011.

In 2013, Sharp is still trumpeting it's "World's First 8K LCD" two years after it was first exhibited.  They make it sound like it was first exhibited to the world only this month.

Wow, that was great! 8K on 2011? No wonder they call them SHARP? I believed OLED was first introduced somewhere on 2007-2008 or earlier....Yes from Japan!!!
It seems that they what to show more on the Resolution of the future display, whatever the brand. It just happened that only Sharp is claiming for this 8K Technology while 4k is already in the Market.
OLED might be the future Technology because they are like Plasma topology they don't rely on backlight, but lesser power consumption lesser than LED/LCD displays. But as of now they are very expensive to produce.

Sony is showing off some mighty fine-looking and super-thin OLED screens at its booth—all prototypes, of course. OLED (Organic Light-Emitting Diode) screens are believed by many to be the future of display technology. They use a synthetic electrophosphorescent process, not unlike what give fireflies their light, that makes for lower-power consumption, excellent handling of fast-action scenes and sports, brilliant color, and Ritz-cracker slimness (seriously).

I've seen OLED screens at CES before, but I've never seen one as big as the 27-inch prototype that Sony has on display, along with a slew of photo-frame-sized screens. They are simply stunning. I've included a few pictures here. But pictures don't do them justice, so if you happen to be at the show, check 'em out.

As you probably, know OLED screens are already used in small devices like MP3 players (Samsung's K5 and new K3, for example), but soon we'll see them in bigger laptops, like this sweet CWT 7064 OLED Notebook with Windows SideShow that's on display at the Microsoft booth. As for when we'll see OLED TVs, that remains to be seen. One issue is the relatively short life span of OLED screens, a kink that needs to be worked out before the technology goes big screen and mass market.

My My, that was 6 years ago. It hasn't really gained traction, has it?  Yung LCD retina display ng iPhone 5 nilampaso yung OLED ng Galaxy S3.
