Unused Channels of Mutli Channel Amp
« on: Nov 12, 2012 at 10:25 PM »
Is the output power increased on the used channels of a 5 channel amp if only 3 channels are used? Ex. Rotel rmb 1075 (120 watts per channel)  L,C,R are used and two surround channels not used.  Lumakas ba LCR?

If the power supply is stiff enough to deliver rated power with all channels driven, LCR power would be the same.

If you're not using the 2 channels, it would be better to bridge the fronts (assuming the amp allows bridging) for more headroom in handling dynamic peaks.

Now that it was mentioned, even bridging wont increase power?   Sa car audio ko kasi bridged lahat ng channels eh, if it doesnt increase, i'll just do an active set up na lang pala and will keep only the sub as bridged... Ganon pala yon.  :'( :-\

if the amp has bridging capabilities and configured that way then the power will increase. just remember that in bridge mode the amp is already operating outside its normal parameters so be cautious in giving it a load that it cant power.

example:

Amp A = 50 watts per channel x 2 @ 8 ohms
Bridged Amp A = 125 watts per channel x 1 @ 8 ohms

do not give Bridged amp A with a 4 ohm load unless the manufacturer spec'ed the unit to operate with such a load while bridged. it will destroy the amp.
