Movie Folder Cannot be Accessed in HDD
« on: Dec 17, 2012 at 07:07 AM »
I have a problem with my external HDD formatted in NTFS which was stored for quite sometime.  The last time I used it, it was working fine.  Now when I try to open it, the PC hangs temporarily and I cannot access my movie folders filled with MKVs.  Any fix to this?

I tried opening it in Windows 7, XP and Linux.  Same thing happens.

Have you tried removing the internal HDD and installing it inside your PC? I'm not also sure if it would work pero it might be worth a try.

Bro thanks for the advise but I am not comfortable in removing the hdd from the enclosure.  The hdd by the way is a 1TB WD My Book. The old fat one with the blue LED.

Madali lang doc and it's safe to do naman... matibay naman mga HDD's eh... Lagay tanggal lang ako ng HDD sa enclosure minsan nga di ko na iniiscrew para madaling mag palit...

My book is not same as those third part enclosure that are easy to open. I open my 1TB WD mybook and it takes time and its hard to put it back.

Pag unallocated/unknown siya may problema nga yan.

It appears sa disc management with Healthy status. Yung folder pagnatry ko macheck sa properties parang walang laman i.e. 0 files, 0 folders but sa disc management full ang drive.

Using command prompt Doc, hindi rin ma-access?

I am running chkdsk now. Sana makuha. I will update.

Brader try mo din gamitan ng GetDataBack  or Recover My Files  or any data recovery file makukuha yan.

Pero yung free space ilan pala?

So ibig sabihin nandyan pa yan. Have you tried the folder option show hidden files?

Finished with CHKDSK and here is the result....

After CHKDSK, I was able to access my movie files again.  Guess that solves the problem.  ;D ;D ;D

Just a question:  Are my files in danger if I keep using this drive?

Doc Mel,

#1 wag mo muna sulatan yang disk na yan, kahit ano (or if you use GetDataBack write all data to a different drive) or  run anything that might write any data to the disk to reduce your risk of non-recovery. (this includes scrubbing ng data if your NMT does it (i.e. NMJ, Jukebox etc)

#2 if you have a spare disk, and very important ang laman nyan , clone it
(sa akin important din yan hahaha), clone mo yang disk na yan, i have a few 2TB here clone mo then send over. 2TB = 7 hours cloning nga lang, para may backup ka and if you dont mind.

I recently encountered this with a 3TB and forgot the freaking thing that fixed it (i used home edition lang and it worked like a charm): My problem was a lost partition due to an unsafe pull accidentally from a drive bay:
http://www.easeus.com/datarecovery/

http://www.easeus.com/partition-manager/

Good luck

Edited:
no it is not at risk.  tama scan disk first :) in my case kasi did not work so i did above.
Sometimes it that happens kasi when a disk is left open. anong NMT yan, pabulong?

check if may eject media, so it can unmount the storage properly. sa egreat merong eject (i.e. if you have 8-bay, it ejects all 8 in one go, same for 4-bay), parang yung sa PC natin eject USB.

Thanks bro for that insight.  I am just worried baka kumalat ang bad sectors and later on damage my files.  Maybe I'll just buy another drive for backup.  I do not use an NMT for this drive.  I use it sa HTPC if ever.  Maingat ako sa mga drives ko and I always unmount them before removing them totally from the PC that's why nagulat ako this happened.

Now I know...it happens!!!  Guess HDDs aren't as reliable in storing our precious data.  Masyadong ginagamit...nagkakabad sector.  Bihira ginagamit...ganun din. Hayz!!!

Oo nga. pero no choice pa din naman tayo kundi HDDs for storage, not unless may lumabas na new technology.

my answer is yes, seeing that chkdsk reported bad sectors on the drive, that's already a physical problem on the disk surface. habang ginagamit niyo yan, dadami at dadami yang bad sectors, it's best to back it up already. plus chkdsk may not even be the reason that solved that problem. chkdsk usually will just mark which sectors are unusable. bad sectors can also cause intermittent issues on your drives. so pwedeng sumulpot yan today then tomorrow wala na.

puede naman, pero i guess comfort ko lang to eject them before unplugging

di ko napansin yung bad sectors sa screenshot! senyales talaga, move the data out to a newer disk. then again a new disk with warranty is never a sure-fire protection, kaya either by ghost ka ng disk via cloning or go RAID 1 :)

This issue happened to me yesterday sa isa sa mga WD 1TB drive ko...

It was connected to my laptop... basta ko na lang tinanggal tapos kinabit ko sa desktop ko to copy some pics so i can transfer to my laptop... Tinanggal ko din basta sa PC after copying tapos kinabit ko sa laptop.. When i opened it nawala lahat ng existing files ko and ang natira lang eh yung files na na copy ko from my dekstop...

I checked kung gaano kalaki available space sa HDD and it shows na occupied pa to almost full so meaning andun pa yung files pero ang nag shoshow lang eh yung 6 pics..

I used scandisk and it saw some errors on the disk pero di naman bad sector... After scandisk fixed the disk lumabas na ulit yung mga old files ko...
