Check out Image in Harrison Plaza, I think it's the one on display, price is the one Woodie quoted, but it's best that you check it out yourself.

Is it recommended to just buy it here or is it worth the trouble in bringing them in from Canada ?

Medyo strict na kasi sa airport natin ngayon....

I suggest you get it here. First problem is the risk of being tax. Another problem is the hassle of bringing it and the risk of getting damaged or lost. Lastly is the warranty.

warpzone18: You may like to try Electronics Depot in Libis. Look for the Mirage AVS Home Theater which is presumably alike the Take 5 (at least they physically look alike except for a few litle things) since Mirage and Energy are owned by a single parent company API of Canada. Energy's are solely distributed by Wilfred of AVDI in Shangrila but you may get a better deal on a pretty much same speaker at Elect Depot since AVDI sells their products at a premium price! Take 5's are great speakers no doubt but as an addititonal info, you may like to audition the Atlantic Technology T70's at Listening in Style, imho it nips the Take 5 a tad in surround sound capability! Look for JR coz he normally gives 15% to 20% discount. Just my 2 cents...

Sorry to resurrect an old topic....but how much is the Take 5 now? How about the Take 5.2? Where is the most inexpensive place to buy them from?

Who's selling this second hand 16K unit that woodie mentioned?

I have not personally heard the Take 5 but a friend who is an HT enthusiast does not like it at all.  I have heard the JBL NSP1 partnered with JBL's PB10, Harman Kardon receiver and DVD player and it sounded awesome for its price.

I heard it in Architectural Audio in New World Hotel.  Their number is 811-6715.  They'll set up the system you want so you can really evaluate them.  They specialize in JBL, Infinity and Harman Kardon products.

Please listen to the system you want to buy before getting it.  That's the only way you can make an educated decision.  Don't base your decision merely on specs and what people think.  Also, bring DVDs and CDs that you are familiar with.

Good luck!

I called Architectural Audio and the retail price for the NSP-1 is 20,900 pesos.  The JBL PB-10's retail price is 18,600 pesos.  They said the prices are indeed negotiable.

Good Luck!

maximus: Have you also heard the JBL SCS178? Does it compare favorably with the Take 5 or the NSP1+PB10?

Thanks for the info

Mc,

I have heard the SCS178 and they are very good given their price.  The NSP-1 is indeed better but of course, they are more expensive.  Both are great values.  Unfortunately, I haven't heard the 5s so I can't comment on how they compare.

The best bet would be to listen to all 3 of them and decide.  It always boils down to personal preference anyways.

Good Luck!

Actually budget is a little limited, and it seems the SCS178 fits the bill with room to spare. The specs are also impressive especially for the price. It has the same speaker drivers size as the NSP1 sats, but an 8" /100W sub instead of the 10"/150W sub on the PB-10.

Yes, I will listen to them as soon as I can.  But till then, can you quantify in terms of clarity, bass volume, bass depth, 'airiness" the NSP1 vs the lower cost SCS178? Are they THAT far apart as the price difference suggests?

Also, can you PM me directions to Architectural Audio? I'm not familar with New Wold Hotel.

Thanks

Arghhhhhh........ >:(

I checked out JBL International's website and the SCS178 sats/center are all rated at 4 ohms nominal impedance. The thing is I'm gonna get the yamaha RX-V430, and this unit only has a switch for the following config: 1) main, rear, center all 8 ohms or greater, 2) main>4 ohms, rear/center> 6 ohms. The SCS178 rears and center are also at 4 ohms...grrrr.......Scrap the SCS178 then?

Arghhhhhhhhhh! Which one is true?
Look at this again,
http://international.jbl.com/home/products/product_detail.asp?ProdId=SCS178/230&SerId=SCS&language=ENGLISH

Nominal impedance is at 4 ohms

BUT, look at the press release (same international.jbl.com website!),
http://international.jbl.com/home/press_room/news/082001ESC%20SCS.html

Look at the SCS178 portion.........voila! 8 ohms nominal impedance!

So which specs is right?

My understanding is that receivers with impedance switches are those with low current capabilities (weak power supplies).  I think these switches introduce additional resistors in the circuitry so that the receiver will see 8ohms instead of the true impedance of the speakers.  Theoretically, the sound should be negatively impacted.  But of course, in reality, it might be otherwise.  So the bottomline is, listen to the equipment.

Good Luck!

If you're willing to spend ~PhP20k on a system like the Take 5, make sure you compare it with entry level systems from PSB (what's the latest incarnation of the Alpha A/V?  I helped my bro-in-law spend around PhP25k on a pair of Alpha A/V's and an Alpha Center), Tannoy Mercury, etc.

Sure, you'd probably just get front main and rears (no sub and center yet which you can get later).  But just very objectively compare sound quality vs. sub-sat systems.

You won't be spending loose change here so do it right.  :-)

I was using the Take 5.2 for many years with an Onkyo AVR.  However, many of the 5.2 owners it seems, are using an HK AVR.
