Samsung claims deepest black and brightest picture on a plasma.

Of course, that tag line was composed before Sammy saw the 2013 Panny plasma ZT60.  Tignan natin in a few months kung totoo nga.

Hands on: Samsung 51F8500 plasma TV review
The LED-lover makes an ambitious though arty attempt at plasma perfection
By Jamie Carter January 10th

Claiming to be as bright as an LED TV and with 40-60% improvement in black level, Samsung's latest F8500 Series is full of surprises.

It's top of the range, it's smart, it's 3D and it's Full HD – and it's downright impossible not to notice among the hundreds of TVs displayed on Samsung's aircraft hangar-like 'booth' at CES 2013.

Nice PQ! But I just hate the plastic bezel.  I prefer steel bezel of the VT30.

was looking into sammy plasma before.. i think they have the 64in size.. i dont know if the 2013 models carried over the same size..

but knowing sammy getting their hands deeper in the plasma market, im sure they will cover all sizes imaginable...

26, 35,36,37,40,42, 46,47,50,51,52,55, 60,61, 64, 70,75,80,100 and beyond..

64 is their biggest.  50 is the most popular size, but no plasma maker should make 50 its biggest size. Considered medium size na lang ang 64 ngayon.

For plasma TVs these days, 50 is the small size; 60 is medium; and 70+ is large.  Yung 42?  Extra small na lang yon ngayon.  The 42 size does not sell well in the US anymore.  They still make a few 42 inchers, but only for the lowest-end models.

They can't make it smaller than 42 because it's hard to make smaller-than-42 plasma sizes, since the individual pixels would have to be so small.

The flagship Sammy F8500 exhibited in CES 2013 was a 64 inch plasma.  According to the Samsung US site, it will be available in 51", 60" and 64" sizes.  Notice that there's no 42 or 43 for that model.

Oh so 64 pala... I hope they continue in making bigger panels. But just a hypothesis most likely the plateau in size would come to around 60 to 70 incher. Why? Space for it at home. The 100 inchers if it becomes available would take a lot of real estate.
As to the stand of the 2013. I wonder why they made it that way. The convexity front and back middle seems ok for table placement. But it seems problematic on wall mounts.

Grabe... if 50 is the new SMALL size... it would be too big for our bedroom already... maliit lang bahay namin...

also having a 50incher would be risky for my old glass stand which can only carry 42inchers... :D

But if the prices of these plasma units will continue to drop by 2014 why not... imagine a 50incher pana plasma for only 40k? wow... that would be the day :D

Again as technology progresses... im sure prices of "older" units will drop considerably... Just like the 42VT30 selling at 39k last Nov2012...

Sizes are not dictated by the manufacturers.  They're dictated by the buyers.

It's all about marketing.  If the size doesn't sell, they will stop making it.

I'm guessing it won't be a problem for wall-mounting.  I have a hunch that the stand is removable.  Don't attach the stand if you're going to wall-mount.

Me, I don't like the looks of the new stand.  Why did they make it that way?  Again, it's all about marketing.  They wanted a new design that will differentiate the new model from other brands and other models that came before it.

When a design team tries to come up with something new and never-before-seen, sometimes they produce good-looking designs, sometimes they just produce weird-looking ones.  Just look at the chicken feet on the high-end 2011 & 2012 Sammy plasmas.

I say it's Panasonic that came up with the best-looking designs for 2013.

I agree. They build models that they think will yield the most economic benefit for the company. All the major makers have the capacity to build 100+" models, but a lot are not doing it at the moment because of economic viability. Current LCD fabs allow for 180" panels at a very high cost (they'd probably build them if there is sufficient demand).

60+ inch-TV shouldn't be a problem even in a small dingy room, just wall-mount it.

Especially if it's at least 4K.   84 inch 4K Sony at just over 1 meter was still comfortable for me.

Agree.  the wonders of HD is actually in viewing it up close just at the point where you can't see the screen pixels.  For a 1080p, a 42" screen is best viewed just 2-3 ft away.   My 29-inch 1080p monitor is just 1 ft away from me.  And for a 4k res, an 84" screen would be gorgeous at just 6-ft away.

yes, it's from Avatar extended.

With a wall to wall TV, this is more likely a 4k or 8k resolution.  And I kinda predict such TVs will not be available from appliance stores, but from home builder depots.  Because they will be modular wall dividers you install as part of your home building blueprint and will require contractors to install.  ;D   Power consumption might not be an issue since it could be using more efficient display technologies.

By that time, 60 inch OLED na ang uso, hindi na problema ang power consumption.

Meron pa bang 42 inch plasma na Full HD available now? Parang puro HD-Ready lang since wala nang VT30 at ST30 for Panny.

Kahit sa soon-to-be-released in the US na 2013 models, meron pa ring 42 1080p: the 42S60.

Ang phased out for 2013 Panny ay ang 720p plasma.  Wala nang 720 Panny plasma of any size ngayong 2013.

Hindi ko sinusunod yung mga distance for maximum immersion.  Sa sinehan nga lagi akong nasa likod, around 3rd row from the rear.

I tried standing as close as possible on a 4K TV.  Limitation lang ng tao is the minimum distance in order to see the entire screen.  I think Oks ang experience ng kabayo if it watches on a 4K with its nose touching the screen.  Hehehe.

Anyway, I hope 4K goes to down to current 1080p prices in 2-3 years.

Looks like LG is about to give up on plasma.

For 2013, they only have one 3D model: 60PH6700 (3D active-shutter).  Only one model and one size in that series.

Their other series are in the budget category - the PN6700 (1080p, no 3D); and the PN4500 (720p, no 3D).

No news yet for the lower-end Sammy plasmas of 2013.

As for the Sammy F8500 plasma, David Mackenzie is impressed:

Samsung Shows F8500 Plasma TV With Near-OLED Picture Quality At CES
By David Mackenzie • Saturday, 12 January 2013, 11:30 am GMT

... In fact, the image quality is close to OLED, featuring the many benefits of plasma display technology, but with dazzling brightness which is out of the ordinary.
