Topic: 3TB HDD showing only 764GB

I bought yesterday a 3TB WD  for my external HDD (to rip my blu rays). After trying to initially format it, it only showed a capacity of 764 GB. Upon checking sa different forums, it seems that there is still some issue between 3TB and when using Widows OS, parang di pa narerecognize yung 3TB , something like that.There are numerous recommendations and I tried some pero hindi ko pa na solve yung sa akin. Just letting all of you know that there is an issue like this. I don't know if na raise na ito before in this forum. Sana nag 2TB na lang muna ako.

Puwede mo naman pa rma yan chief if may issue talaga. Rgarding sa OS naman yah di recognize unless na may pang HDD unlocker ka pang read ng more than 2TB na internal HDD.

Win 7 recognizes 3TB, you use GPT to create the partition of 1 whole 3TB, alternate is to partition them into two 2TB + 1TB, pero i am sure its recognized.

Win 7 ka ba bro? if yes, it should. unless may ginagawa si WD na proprietary. post mo yung model, i'll dig and see.

Take the advice of bro Jim, do it on win 7. Just make sure that you are using a hdd dock that recognizes 3tb capacity hdd or else it will really limit its capacity to what it can recognize. Ganyan din nangyari sa akin, there's a working solution naman.

I just had this issue the other day. Windows XP was detecting it as 764GB only. What I did was to connect it to Windows 7 and set it as GPT and not MBR.

if you are migrating contents, go for disk cloning but make sure it supports 3TB.

ghost 1TB source to a 2TB is ok with most dual docks with disk cloning
ghost 2TB source to a 3TB is ok if your dual docks support 3TB and the 2TB must be in GPT, otherwise you cant  extend the 2TB partition.

Anyways, I had 8 tries to get this right when i migrated my 1.5T/2.0T disks to 3TB

windows 7 din gamit ko, puro 3tb din ang mga external hdds ko narecognize naman.

baliktad naman ang nangyari sa 3TB ko. kapag 650 MB nalang ang free space bigla nalang mag crash at corrupted ang files. dalawang beses na reformat ulit pero mali ang pag format nung umpisa pala, di na check ang GPT.

if i have to re-format the 3tb hdd in a USB case, does the option to tick GPT accessible? first time na format ang 3tb sa desktop na naka slave pero di na tick ang GPT.

paano e re-format without going through the hassle of slaving the drive in a desktop PC? di kasi ako marunong mag format kaya pinagawa ko sa kapatid ko.

tingnan mo sa disk management sa administrative tool kung meron "unallocated space"(in black bar) dun sa 3tb hadisk mo.katulad ng sa picture:



pag meron. ibig sabihin namali ka sa pag allocate ng space ng hardisk.pede ka pa gumawa ng panibagong partition para magamit mo yung natitirang space.
o kaya i-dosolve mo ang naunang drive na ginawa mo at i-reformat ng panibago para buong 3tb ang makikita.
pag wala naman. malamang na corrupt ang drive bago pa na format.
kailangan mo na ang low level format para madisolve mo ang buong drive.magiging good as new na ulit yan. try mo ang link sa unang post ko.

Salamat ng marami for helping me.  I tried most of the recommendations given.
Finally naayos ko din. Based from recommendations, I have done 3 things:

1.  Use Windows 7. Windows XP has 2TB restriction
2.  Select GPT during the disk drive initialization.
3.  Change my HDD enclosure to one that can support  3TB.    I use this 4 x 3TB enclosure which I think is similar to Probox from sir toys4geeks.
