UPGRADING FROM 5.1 TO 7.1
« on: Mar 28, 2013 at 08:37 PM »
mga sirs just like to ask a question ... i currently have a 5.1 Warf Diamond Series 9 na setup.   It's an old setup that I used in our condo and i plan to "recycle" muna  ( until i get more funds to get a better speaker setup)  ... on our new house.

Here's my speaker setup:

Fronts:  DIA 9.1
Center: DIA 9 CS
Rear: DIA 9 DFS
RECEIVER: YAMAHA RX V663 ( old and plan to upgrade soon)

I plan to upgrade my HT setup sa 7.1 any suggestion on what front floor stander speakers  I can buy to match my old setup but I can still use later-on when I upgrade?

Fronts:  (new floorstander speaker )
Center:  DIA 9 CS
Right and Left Surrond:  DIA 9 DFS ( will this be ok as sorround speakers or use the DIA 9.1 as surround)
Rear:   DIA 9.1 ( from front to back)

Thanks for the help in advance.

Thanks guys How about B&W speakers to a Yamaha amplifier is it compatible?

Bitin nga ako sa 9CS na speakers.  My HT room is not that big 4 x 4 lang and be using it for Movies and Gaming via Projector.

Do you guys know how much the Warf 10.5 speaker cost and where?

if you want to upgrade, your direction should give you a significant change from what you have now. There is not much to gain from getting the same speaker model with only a dent of difference. 9.1 is a BS speaker, shifting to a FS wharfe will not give your higher gain considering that your setting for the speakers would most likely be small anyway. In the home theater setting, the midbass part is hardly noticeable unless you are using speakers with 8 inches and up woofers.

If you have enough budget, get a different brand of speaker so you really can hear significant difference, the Monitor Audio BX5 and BXLCR can be an option, SVS too has a lot of options for you and so is Polk Audio.

You need not worry about your surround speakers as in case you want to save up, you can keep the 9.1 and dfs. Timber matching is very important but for non sophisticated ears,it hardly matter, di rin masyadong mapapansin ang kawalan ng timber matching in case ibang brand na ang front at center speaker mo. You only have two types of surround, the surround speaker and the surround back speaker. your 9 dfs is a dipole speaker, which performs very well if installed at the side wall along the line of your seating position. your 9.1 can be used as surround back, which most of the time is direct radiating or monopole(one direction only),

if your room is not that huge, you will hardly benefit from a 7.1 set up, the DFS would more than suffice, bihirang bihira naman ang movies na 7.1 ang encryption eh

I used Yamaha with wharfes, ok naman, i used wharfes diamond 9.1, 9.5, 9cs, 9cm with Onkyo ok din naman, issue lang with wharfes medyo bitin sa high frequency pero madami namang tao gusto ang ganito

^kagandang payo...
Kaya ok rin natanong ang area kasi baka sapat na ang 5.1 then ang budget for the 2 speakers could be added to the new and better set of speakers. Ganyan din halos ang mangyayari sa akin in the near future kasi baka mapapalipat sa smaller area. While searching for new gears please and please again, pay attention to room acoustics. Hth ;)

some experienced users here have said that it's much better to add to your front speakers i.e. front height and/or front wide. The reason they say is that the human ear (and brain) is much more receptive/attuned to changes of sound in the front rather than in the rear.

However your receiver has to have the Audessy DSX option so you have to consider that when upgrading your AVR.

Upgrading to 7.1 is not really a Big thing on HT because not so many SW available have this 7.1 discrete audio output. However, if you really want to upgrade into 7.1 setup you need to consider the following:
1. Size of Room - For the position of extended sorround
2. Listening position- need to have a good listening position
3. Room acoustics- This is really important for you to enjoy the extended sorround
4. extra set of speaker wires - Need to consider speaker wiring layout
5. Bigger Display, bigger sound requires bigger display
For me looking at your set-up try upgrading your subwoofer first and your display makes a significant difference. A 7.1 set-up needs a dedicated room. Based on my 7.2 Set-up I don't really feel the difference between 5.1 and 7.1 while watching Movies. The Big Roars and SPL (subs) really made the movies more Dramatic.
By the way, this is just me! If you really want to 7.1 consider my advise.

Floor stander: Warf 9.5 or 9.6 are excellent.
Then move the 9.1 as Front Wide or Front High
The front wide and front high have provided the most satisfying result for a 7.1

But I would also high recommend that the 9cs be tuned and tweeter replaced by Anthony Audio to get clearer dialogues.

I have a Warf 9 set-up in one room and after the tuning by Anthony Audio the improvement did not require I upgrade to more expensive speakers in the said room.

Also as odyopayl stated, a SUB will make major improvement on your movie experience.

+1 on the sub recommendations. many would agree that shifting from 5.1 to 7.1 in a small space is not significant, but the addition or upgrade of a sub will give dramatic results, either for movies or music.
