My brother up the point of black bars for 4K movies when using a conventional 4K TV.

This bothers him whether it is on an Android smartphone's AMOLED display or OLED TV at the mall.

This makes him prefer 21:9 computer displays like the LG 34-inch to match the 21:9 ratio of movies.

My search yielded this 4K 21:9 LG 38UC99 display that has a native resolution of 3840 x 1600.

That is the native resolution of 4K movies without need of scaling.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mDBWH5XGbjg

PPI of the 27-inch non-5K  and this LG are 108.79 vs 109.47 making them essentially equal. So it shares the same picture height of the 27-inch iMac but 5 more ratio of width.

Now the bad news. It's $1500 + shipping from the US. I computed LBC's air is at P21,797.04 while sea is at P 4,904.08.

At that price, level of hassle and strong possibility claiming warranty would make buying a LG OLED 55B6P at 90,000 a much better value proposition.

Still though... wow!

That's how clueless SM Appliance salespersons are. To think na those guys came directly from manufacturers. Buti pa sa abensons mas may alam mga salespersons doon mas mura pa sila.

medyo nasabay na sa price ang abenson sa murang halaga ngayon.

If they use Google's Android TV then I will try them.

TL;DR:
- LG webOS cannot read ExFAT and Sony's Android TV can read ExFAT.
- Salesmen are badly trained which makes buying very unpleasant.

I went testing LG OLED and Sony LED 4K TVs today at two appliance stores at Alabang Town Center after lunch.

I brought with me a 32GB SanDisk Extreme USB 3.0 Flash Drive formatted in ExFAT with 4K-native movies and a 1080p content.

This was formatted using macOS Sierra.

I went to the ground floor to test LG OLED TV with webOS 3.0. TV saw the USB flash drive but was not able to read the drive.

Sales person claimed using a Macbook with the USB flash drive places a "firewall" and I should use a computer instead.

Talking down to a customer is bad salesmanship especially those in the demographic that can buy a "luxury item" that is on average 20% more expensive than a computer. OLED are the "Mac" of the TV industry as they priced like a "luxury item" vs LED TVs.

I do not advocate the use of torrent sites and only mention it for descriptive purpose.

Salesman : All downloadable content from torrent sites are ALL up-res
Fact: It is stipulated on the torrent name that if the 4K video is up-res or native. You can also tell if it's really compressed by the file size. If it isn't nearing 100GB then it is lossy.

Salesman: Did you download from Site A or Site B torrent site.
Fact: Site A was closed down and Site B was still up. Shows how out of date this fella was.

Salesman: No one sells 4k blu ray players in the Philippines.
Fact: Datablitz has been selling the Xbox One S with 4K blu ray player that can read 4K blur ray discs at near US prices as of my checking today. This Microsoft console came out in July 2016. Manong is really not updated.

Salesman: Only Netflix and Youtube offer 4K content in the Philippines
Fact: Manong got this right, thankfully.

I told the salesman to stop talking or else "mag-aaway tayo". I hate ignorance and his talking about technical matters as if he knew something really soured my appetite to "buy".

I went to the top floor for Sony and when they plugged it in it Android TV was able to read ExFAT and was able to play the movies. Sadly the top floor did not have LG OLED and medyo unhelpful yung salesman.

I am sharing my experience so you know each brand's filesystem limitation and how bad training is for salesmen.

Marami sila kaso you're better off asking help from people on forums like here who can actually give you factual answers rather than "fake news" type answers.

My guess is that webOS will be able to read FAT32 or NTFS. This was not volunteered by salesman.

FAT32 and NTFS  -- can be read by both my late-2012 LG TV (I'm sure WebOS3 should be able to read them as well) and 2016 Sony Android TV...

as for the salesmen, I just ignore nor contradict what they say.  if i feel he's saying nonsense (unfounded truth), I will ask them a different question so that he won't be able to continue what he's saying.  we would easily know when they're telling the truth or not.

I only need they're cooperation to allow me to test the unit in order to help me decide if that specific unit meet my requirements.  and if it does, next is the price negotiations =))

2nd half pa ng 2017. Then since mura ng unti, may surge sa demand. Hehe! Then 2018 cheaper na talaga siya. By 2018 naman, baka bumaba na din ang costing ng QD display. Haha! Technology nga naman. Never ending bumaba and phasing out. Parang plasma dati.

You have to factor in the weakening Peso that started on June 30, 2016.

Further weakening is expected 12 months from now.

http://news.abs-cbn.com/business/11/02/16/peso-may-hit-p51-vs-dollar-by-end-2017

I hope something could be done to stem further weakening.  ::)

BOE to set up 3rd OLED factory in western China, say reports
http://www.digitimes.com/news/a20161102PD212.html
Chen Bo-zhen, Taipei; Adam Hwang, DIGITIMES [Thursday 3 November 2016]

BOE Technology will invest CNY46.5 billion (US$6.94 billion) to set up a 6G flexible OLED panel factory with monthly production capacity of 48,000 glass substrates in Mianyang City, western China, its third OLED factory in China, and will start construction in December 2016 and production in 2019, according to China-based media reports.

BOE has begun production at a 5.5G rigid OLED panel factory in Ordos City, northern China, and will expand monthly production capacity to 4,000 glass substrates in 2019.

In addition, BOE is setting up a 6G flexible OLED panel factory in Qingdao City, northern China, with investment of CNY22 billion, and will gradually install a monthly production capacity of 15,000 glass substrates in 2017, 2018 and 2019 each.

BOE will have a total monthly production capacity of 4,000 glass substrates for rigid OLED panels and 93,000 units for flexible OLED panels in 2019. In comparison, Samsung Display will have total monthly production capacity of 190,000 glass substrates for rigid OLED panels and 180,000 units for flexible OLED panels in 2019, while LG Display will have total monthly production capacity of 96,000 glass substrates for flexible OLED panels in the year.

China-based China Star Optoelectronics Technology, Truly Opto-Electronics, Visionox and Tianma Micro-electronics as well as Japan-based Sharp and Japan Display also plan to set up flexible OLED production capacities.
