My Tube Journey
« on: Oct 14, 2013 at 09:24 PM »
My fascination with vacuum tubes started in the early 60's when my father bought a set of
Encyclopedia, "The Book of Knowledge"...
There i came to read an article about how to become a radio amateur.
In that article i saw how the 6SN7 tube was used in a super regenerative receiver
operating at 80 and 40 meter amateur radio band.
And then in high school in my junior year, i saw some big
big transmitter tubes, the 813 was one of them..
My first tube power amp was a 6EM5 push-pull made from
parts borrowed from a high school chum...that was around 1968...
it was a mono amp used to drive a Jensen 8 incher...i used a ceramic
pickup turntable, my favorite then was Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass,
and the Ventures....the 6EM5 was a TV vertial scanning output tube,
borrowed from out Admiral 21 inch BnW tv set, it was a
beam power tube unlike the 6BQ5 which was a pentode, more like a 6973....

Fast forward to around 2000....
while i still had some loose tubes from tv sets stashed,
i really started collecting tubes when i went to work in Russia around 2004....
having met Gerry Sta. Maria here in PDVD, he gave me a lot of tubes to look at,
and since the internet had all datasheets, i was able to look at tube specs and
see what the tubes can do...then there was this all year round sale of
U1$ tubes out of Rogalski's in Miami....this is how i came to accumulate
over a thousand tubes...i also ordered tubes out of Moscow, Russia....

my tube stash can be seen here: https://www.facebook.com/tony.tecson/media_set?set=a.625867857434852.1073741842.100000349293477&type=1

those who are familiar with tubes will quickly note that my tube stash are
mostly TV tubes and some transmitting types, like the 813, 4D32, 7405, 6146, 1624
and the likes...99% of my power tubes are TV horizontal output tubes....
i have a lot of plans to use those tubes i consider as "sleeper" tubes...
scoffed at by the golden ear club as mere TV tubes, but they hold a lot of promise
when put to good use.....

in my case, i have a tube 45 ultra/22 linear wpc for 5 years na. it's my reference for comparison.  it has never crossed my mind to sell it.

Nice story Tony.
There are but just a handful of guys like you who have the passion, art, and knowledge to design amps based on the tubes available.
Yes, properly designed, those TV tubes sound sweet!
Malapit na ako magpagawa. Konting ipon pa. Low budget pa ako ngayon :).

I'm sure I won't.
I've been a fan of Tony for a long time now.
But still deciding what kind of configuration since this will be a keeper.
Malambing talaga ang SET pero I'm still basically a push-pull type especially with the speakers I have in mind and the recordings I listen to most often.
Sana pag ready na ako, nandyan pa yung mga 'bakal' na pinagusapan natin. ;)
Right now still busy with the HiFi Show.

Sorry for the OT.

much as i would like to stay away from the usual "audio" tubes,
jopet sold me a quad of Shuguang EL34 taken off a Cayin amp,
that changed my impression of so called "chinese" tubes,
they are not so bad as some people paint them to be.....
reinforced my belief that it is not the tubes,
but what you do with it that matters....:D

and then someone traded two quads of KT88's for my 6H8C aikido,
so now i have to make power amps out of them too.... 8)

my real passion is TV tubes, i made my first tube amp in the late 60's
using the 6EM5, a beam power tube used as vertical scan output tube...
a friend in high school loaned out a power transformer and i bought a Lion output traffo...
it was a mono amp driving a Jensen 8 inch full ranger on a speaker baffle
used as a stand for our Admiral 21 inch black and white tv circa 1962...
now i have over a thousand TV tubes to play around with,
these are 1$ tubes so amplifier maintenance is cheap and easy....

after 3 years, i found out that folks are more interested in the usual so-called
audio tubes....the 12Axx series, the 6L6, 6V6, etc....

these folks buy amplifiers on the basis of tube rolling....

this is in conflict with my design philosophy.... 8)
i want to be able to design amplifiers that sound good and does not need
tube rolling to bring out good sounds....if my amps changes its sound
each time a tube is plugged in, i feel depressed.... ;)
also low cost of maintenance is important.... 8)

imho, irons in any tube amp can not be overemphasized....
it is the single most expensive part in any amp.....
in my amps, i like them big, as big as practically big can be.... 8)

i saw a current commercial amp with KT88 output tube,
but using an output core the type of which we see
on 6BQ5 type amplifiers....while under normal listening
in a home environment, you probably won't miss the lows,
still i believe that the output traffo that size does not
do justice to what the KT88 is capable of...
amplifiers rated 50 watts at 1khz, does not mean 50 watts at
20hz, nor at 20khz....core saturation is the deal breaker at 20hz,
while leakage inductance and shunt capacitance is the deal breaker at 20khz..
it may interest you to know that SS amps with it low damping factor
does not suffer from this limitations...

Edrel is already there.....in a class on his own...
a reliable friend, we exchange notes every now and then,
he also lets me use his bobbins and irons in my OPT builds...

my other passion is teaching young people about tubes...
reason being, i want the tube technology passed on to
next generation DIY'ers....
there are still millions of tubes out there, waiting to be picked...
aside from moderating at diyaudio.com,
i have several threads and this is one of them...

I have heard some of Tony's creations and would say that those indeed were good sounding amps.

This is true, my cousin and I certainly had our fair share of lectures from Tony whenever we would drop by his house :)

for me it is not a business, there is no money to be made selling amps
unless on a scale of mass production where unit cost is low so there is a margin to be had,
there are not many technicians who can do repairs on tube gears
so i am encouraging my technician friends to start on tubes....
by end of November, i am scheduled to hold a lecture/seminar about transformers and amps and tubes
to young techies, hopefully starting them on tubes....these are mostly digital techies...
the lecture venue can sit 24 but to date 60 have signified intentions to join....
we'll see how it turns out.....
my dream is to have DIY'er only meet ups at least once a year similar to ETF or european triode festival
where DIY'ers can display their creations and talk about them in form of lectures...

This pre amp really sounds good :o  Have tried to pair this with three types of amp, A tube push pull a class A Musical Fidelity and a lepai and I may say it can really bring out the goodness if not the best of those amps. The sound is crisp and clear in the highs and rich and full in the lows (mataba ang tunog), voices are clear and very detailed ang SQ,deep and wide din ang sound stage hindi namimili ng genre ng sound :o A very nice creation once again master. More power and keep them coming ;D
