Where to buy packing materials for amplifier?
« on: Dec 26, 2013 at 06:26 PM »
Can somebody help me kung saan pwede makabili ng packing materials. Yung parang  plastic na styro that  are used for heavy amps to avoid being damage during transport. Pwedeng ako na mag cut according to the desired dimension.  If possible meron ding mga boxes. I am planning to bring overseas an old amp  pero wala na yung   original box. Thanks for your recommendations.

National bookstore has balik bayan boxes, styro foam. Suggestion ko para di mag bend yung mga switches is to remove all the knobs and toggle switch handle and pack them separately

Since I seldom buy A/V related stuff locally due to the bloated prices here I occasionally buy abroad and ship my gears to the Philippines. What I do to prepare the gears for the journey and to avoid a DOA would be the ff steps in order:

1. Bubble wrap - available at your local Handyman or Ace. wrap all 6 sides of the amp in 2 layers.

2. Styro - National has this in varying thickness and sizes. Get the thickest and biggest then cut accordingly. I encase the amp with 2 layers of 1 inch thick styro on all 6 sides then secure with packing tape. as Qguy mentioned...I also remove volume knobs to avoid damage.

3. Mark the box as fragile and affix stickers (This side up). amps are not designed to be shipped upside down. do not load the amps in the box sideways or any other weird orientation. It has to be on its feet.

4. if there is extra space on the sides of the box then I load it up with styro cubes.

So basically I build a box suspended inside a box when I ship amps. Never pa naman ako na DOA when it comes to gears that I shipped. Hope that helps

almost the same as synchro_01's method, but my outer box is filled with crumpled newspaper :)
outer box wall > crumpled paper (a lot of them) > inner box wall > styro > bubble wrap > GEAR! (all 6 sides) :)

Thank you guys for your inputs. Got styro from bookstore. I guess bubblewrap will also give additional protection and iwas gasgas. Thank you also for advising to remove knobs.Happy new year!

if the knobs are too complicated to remove then make cut outs on the styro to accommodate the knobs.

I read in another forum in the USA, baka di applicable dito sa Pinas..

The worst thing you can do to a package is to write the words "Fragile"... this is coming from a FEDEX Employee :)

Hahaha very true. While I was in transit in Canada I saw airline employees handling a 55 inch flat screen TV like it was ordinary luggage. Binabagsak sa baggage conveyor.

Couriers don't seem to understand the word FRAGILE. And if they do they'll "professionally" handle it according to standard protocol, that includes throwing your item around!

I remember watching a movie where "throwers" ang tawag nila sa luggage handlers. ;D

Well...they have to fill the belly of the plane with cargo in xx number of minutes. Every minute a plane is on the ground it doesn't make money. Kaya ayun...hinahagis na lang even though its a TV.

Thanks for the recommendations again. I was able to bring to Malaysia my cd player and an amp using bubble wrap as primary packaging then  styrofoam from bookshops as secondary packaging. Finally inilagay ko sa hardcase suitcase. Checked in luggage sa plane. Everything arrived safe.

Saw this link from the internet , his recommendation for packing heavy amps:
