tube wpc vs speaker sensitivity
« on: Jan 20, 2014 at 11:32 AM »
sirs I have two set's of speakers: 1 85 db sensitivity and another one with 89 db; I have two sets of amps to match: 100 wpc hybrid and 22T/45U WPC tube.  just a couple of questions:

1. are both amps sufficient to drive the speakers (mix and match)?
2. is there a general rule, based on experience, when buying tube amp in relation to speaker sensitivity?

any inputs are welcome, TIA.   :)

factors to consider:

1. size of your listening room.
2. your listening habits, how loud do you play?

speaker power and sensitivity include the speaker impedance, what is the lowest speaker impedance dip?
can you be more specific about the tube amp model numbers?
how do we defend our freedom? by the truth when it is assaulted by Marcos lies....

1. 15 x 20 ft
2. usually 9 o'clock volume knob
3. AC Meldoy 103: impedance 8 ohms (minimum 6.4 ohms); sensitivity 89 db; 50-200 w
4. Xavian Piccola:  8 ohms (min not indicated); 85db; 30-120 w
5. Cayin H-100 hybrid 100 wpc (from Audio amplified)
6. SR Audio Heac-07 KT88 22triode / 45 ultra wpc (from SGT)

good morning.

let me share the answers to my queries after trying-out a high-end SS with 75 wpc for 30 days.

1. Yes, both Heac-07 and Cayin H-100 are capable of driving Melody 103 and Piccola.
2. Audition, push the volume to 12 o'clock and check out the sound quantity and sound quality.  If both are pass, then you have an amp that you like.

audition, AB trial and listening to other members' set-up helps.  he he he he  :)

IMHO, system "synergy" is important factor to consider to have a great (if not perfect) matched combo. Personal experience, my 17w tube amp sounds better than my 120w amp on vintage philips speaker.
Anthem CD1
Anthem Pre1
Audio Linear TT
Ortofon Rondo Red
Theta Dac
GTA SE-40 Amp
JBL L7
AudioQuest

+1... system matching is the key to achieve the quality of sound you want to hear no matter how cheap it is( but it usually doesnt come cheap >:D) ...ika nga match made in heaven and heaven din ang feeling pag pinapakinggan ;D ;D ;D

That is a very good room shape. It will fit right in with the Cardas speaker placement guide. I hope your sound stage is on the 15ft wall. Enjoy.

Talagang personal preference na lang pagdating sa levels of loudness pero if you want to quantify it, use an SPL meter. But with the kind of gears that you have, i'm sure maayos tumunog yan even above 12 o'clock.

And tama sila, kailangan din ng synergy.

yes, merong log or audio taper pots, i use them a lot....
for me it is better that you can turn your pot fully clockwise and
still have sound quality....
sound quality is supreme over loudness...
but this is just me...

good afternoon sir Tony, sir Nelson, sir Gino, sir Remington and sir Audiojunkie, many thanks on the inputs and inisghts!

 - synergy
 - personal experience
 - matching
 - Cardas speaker placement guide
 - sound quality over loudness

one step backward, the origin of my post is for me to understand if my current speakers (89db and 85 db sensitivity both 8 ohms) are being driven properly meaning good SQ at around 9-10 o'clock volume level.

when I was able to take hold of a modest "high end" SS with 75 wpc, I was able to do mix and match and comparison for a month at different volume levels and with different recordings.  Swak na swak po lahat ng insights ninyo. last night, i have decided the pairings which fits my sound preference.

let me share without the intention of bragging:  AC Melody 103 with Hegel H80 and Xavian Piccola with KT88 tube amp.

 :)  :)  :)
