really a sad news for us dvd collectors... especially for me since i just started the collection last August.

may naka encounter na ba dito na sealed yung dvd nya for a very long time then when he opened it, may rot na? possible kaya ang dvd rot sa isang sealed dvd?

TIA.

Mabuhay!

Nakakatuwa naman ito! Pagkatapos kong kumayod para makabili lang ng CDs/DVDs kakanta rin pala ng song ni Ms. Streisand "some good things never last".

OT

TIA for any response.

It is the sudden change of temperature that causes these rots, moisture and humidity. So rot in a sealed DVD is highly possible.

I put silica gel inside every DVD, now if you have a sealed cabinet a silica gel or a jigger of water will do just to suck out the moisture. You can also notice this in jewelry shops etc wherein they put a jigger of water in one or two corners.

Not only sucking moisture but dust as well. For some reason, the dust gets into the water. I put those behind my bookshelf. :)

I am guessing that it has something to do that almost all the dust in our homes is made of discarded skin cells that the inhabitants shed.

I bought this Dehumidfier from Ace Hardware at around php70 in hopes that it will prevent my DVD collection from rotting.

Note all the liquid it has absorbed in 3 weeks  ;)

I also place a pillow of silica gel in my more precious DVD's for added prevention.

There are different sizes available, The one on the picture is 600ml. You can just place it in one corner of you DVD cabinet.
It's not too distracting naman.

It's now officially a victim of DVD Rot  :'(

Rot is very visible and disc is no longer playable on DVD players, but surprisingly plays on a PS3  ::)

Other victims... Appleseed Steelbook and 2046 Kor LE  :'(

I just discovered that I officially joined the DVD rot club. My Nightmare on Elm Street Infinifilm Edition just won't play in my DVD player anymore. I tried playing in a DVD drive and ganoon din. There are no visible signs naman but it just won't play anymore. Disc 2 is still playable though. Silica gel here I come.

Whats the fastest way to check if the discs have been hit by rot (short of having it loaded on the player to see if it will play in its entirety)?

No other way sir,..

Sometimes even if the disc has that cloudy thingy, it will still play, and sometimes it won't, depending on how much the damage is...

The only sure fire way is to load it via the player sir,...

Kahit sealed possible parin mag dvd rot or if ever mag karoon ng foggy surface, due to humidity, eto ung nangyari sa Da Vinci Code ko na almost half a year bago ko sya buksan nagkaroon tuloy ng foggy surface ung both disc mas severe ung sa disc 1 pero na treat ko naman sya kaagad, buy buffing it with filtered water using a microfiber cloth , un nga lang di maiiwasan ang pag kagasgas pero mild scratches lng naman pero mas nanaisin ko pang magkaron ng minimal scratch kesa di ko na sya mapanood diba ;)...just sharing

other thing put a pillow case of silica gel...it helps control oxidation resulting moisture the coz of the foggy surface issue on our precious collections.

This is really scary news. As new to the hobby, Alam ko naman na dvd wont last that long but still mahirap isipin na mag rot yung precious dvd collection mo.

I just read this topic.
Don't buy pirated cds...DVD is better.
