Damn, Holland scores on a penalty kick with 2 minutes left of stoppage time.  What a recovery by the Dutch - truly a case of snatching victory from the jaws of defeat.

Arjen Robben made things happen for the Dutch, what a player.  Van Persie was out of sorts.

The knockout stages separate the men from the boys.  The netherlands vs mexico match needed a hydration break because of gruelling conditions.  That last penalty call was because of exhaustion, the defender got there with enough time but couldnt pull of the tackle properly, resulting to a foul in the box.

Now the tournament really begins.

Will check out the French tonight.  Haven't seen them play but by all accounts they are strong.  Na miss ko tuloy yung magic ni Zinedine Zedane, the best player I've ever seen along with Maradona of course.

what will make it hard for the french is the absence of workhorse Frank Ribery.  They have enough firepower to make it to the quarters but then that is a potential date with the Germans, and if their luck continues they go up against the host nation in the semis.

France eliminates Nigeria 2-0.  It was close until the end when Nigeria began making crucial errors including an own goal. Not convinced by the French.  Their best player in this match was the little guy Valbuena, tiny legs running around tirelessly, great assist passing and impeccable corner crosses.

Nigeria is actually pretty tough.  They wont win a cup but they will give quality (not good or great) teams a hard time.  If I'm not mistaken it took Argentina a 3rd goal just to win because the Nigerians didnt want to quit.

Looks like the German team will meet the French in the quarters as expected.  There is still 10 minutes to play in extra time but Leow has been substituting his midfielders with defensive mid fielders and has changed formation.  I think the Germans have decided to just hold on instead of going in for the kill.  Algeria is spent anyway, most of their players are starting to cramp.

what an exciting last ten minutes! just when I said the Germans would be content on sitting on the ball they break a counter attack and mount their own for a 2-0 lead, only for Algeria to get one back immediately after...Crazy final minutes but Germany through to the last eight.

Caught the last 10-minutes and the highlights.  Looked like the Algerian goalie had a busy time keeping the score nil-all in the first 90-minutes, only to give up 2 goals in extra time.

Same story with the France vs Nigeria match, the Nigerian GK keeper Enyeama (who has the most saves of the WC thus far) had another fantastic game but in the closing minutes, slowed down considerably and made a mistake that allowed an easy header by Pogba.  This was followed by a Nigerian own goal for which Enyeama was partly to blame. Pity.

Tonight will be a good set of matches. A gritty and tactically sound USA will be playing slight favorites but underperforming Belgium.

Argentina will be playing another defensive team in Switzerland. Ottmar Hitzfeld will probably park the bus later to stop Di Maria's incursions and stifle Leo Messi then try to counter. I think Iran has written the blueprint on how to play Argentina.

For some reason I'm rooting for a US win over Belgium.  Parang Gilas Pilipinas ang dating nila sakin eh, they are playing with a lot of heart.

Interesting yung comments ng American lady that I saw sa TV a few days back. Hindi raw totoong sports ang soccer kasi it doesn't give so much emphasis on individual talent.  Masyado raw team effort tapos maraming no-point games.  Kaya hindi raw sisikat sa US despite the current World Cup fever.

Sabagay it's a sport na malaki chance ng weaker team to win.   Play defense only then 0-0 tapos penalty shoot-out.

I'm rooting for Lil Messi and the US.

Compare mo naman sa American football - stop and go, offensive team alternating with defensive team, total time ball is in play - what? 15 minutes?  Probably less.  Pretty easy way to make a living.

Back on topic, Swiss side holding its own vs Messi and company.  Great defense by both teams.  Argentina lacks depth in the mid-field, one that consistently creates opportunities for its forwards.

why should there be emphasis on individual talent if its a REAL team sport?  Didn't the San Antonio Spurs just school an in prime and obviously more talented and more physically gifted Miami Heat Big 3 with excellent team play?  I'm almost certain the lady knows little about "Football".  She can stick to watching NFL, which hardly uses the foot in tandem with the ball, and they insist on calling it football..what a joke.

ALso, I cant totally agree to weaker teams having a larger chance to win by just playing defense, although I see the logic of such an argument.  Its just that in reality, it hardly works.  There are 2 very recent examples (Bayern Munich vs Manchester United at the UEFA final eight and Chelsea vs Atletico Madrid at the UEFA semis) that even if you "park the bus" in front of the goal, the opposing team may still find a chance to score because they have no fear of a counter.

And if does result to a penalty shoot out, chances are the defensive team fielded defensive players that have little to no experience in taking penalties.

On paper its even.  Argentina is ranked 5 while Switzerland is ranked 6.  Argentina though has Messi and Di Maria who has been in form since the UEFA finals.

Hart did the same for the last play against Uruguay, incredibly risky because its an open goal on the other end.  But it is heartbreaking for the Swiss.

I've always thought that the Argentine team had a lucky draw to get to the knockout stages.  This game against the Swiss just showed how poor their team play really is.
