That's what makes Messi better than Ronaldo (IMO) - he creates a lot more scoring opportunities for his teammates.  His assist record is truly fantastic.

I like Messi better as well. He is calm and balanced when he has the ball. And he has vision, touch, and accuracy - all attributes of a great passer.

USA vs Belgium now, 0-0 at 28 min.  USA being badly outplayed here. Based on what I've seen so far, they won't win this match on merit. They sorely lack good mid-fielders to get the offensive going.  Someone like Pirlo or Schweinsteiger.  Strikers need good mid-field support to get in position to strike.  Otherwise, they'll have to create their own opportunities, which is difficult unless one has Maradona or Messi levels of talent!

The US is good in maintaining ball possession but not in creating realistic goal opportunities.  Penalty shoot-out lang yata pag-asa.  Hehe

And thats the reason I think leaving Donavan out was a mistake.  He has the experience and his role in clubs is to be an attacking midfielder, quite similar to Wesley Sneijder of the Netherlands, albeit a poor mans version of.  I just like that they play with their heart on their sleeve and leave it all out on the pitch.

The Brazilians on the other hand have been cocky and lackluster with their play.  they are getting away with pure talent and luck.

Still 0-0 at 81 min (and we are still awake).  Good thing it's Pasig day :).

Howard is being peppered. May pag-asa pa, pa-abutin lang sa penalty shoot-out.

I've always thought that the Argentine team had a lucky draw to get to the knockout stages.  This game against the Swiss just showed how poor their team play really is.

Sabella keeps changing their formation, too: 5-3-2, then 4-3-3, then 4-4-2, which is probably confusing his players.

Argentina, on paper, has the most lethal strike force of any nation, with Aguero, Higuain, Di Maria, and Messi. But the tactics have been poor, and the supplier to this fab four, G@go, has also underperformed, imho.

They are very reliant on the heroics of one man. The funny thing is that these are very similar circumstances to 1986. ;D

Too bad Kun Aguero is now gone for the tournament.  Nawalan nang katulong si Messi.  Mabuti na lang si Di Maria has been in absolute killer form for the past few months.

Lukaku was the catalyst. He deserved that goal.

The theme for the round of 16 has been: play a nervous first 80 minutes,  then play a furious action-packed end game. This has been a great World Cup!

So true. We saw this in the 2 matches today. Also with Germany-Algeria and France-Nigeria yesterday.

Multiple chances by France especially Benzema but so far Neuer is equal to the task.  Germany leads 1-0 on a Hummels header early on as the first half ends.

German defense looking shaky.  This match is far from over.

And Germany is through.  They owe that one to Neuer no doubt.  Looking less convincing as the tournament wears on.

That's the best I've seen Brazil play in this World Cup, free flowing, confident offense and improved defense.  On the strength of their QF performances, I was going to say Brazil should beat Germany but with Neymar and their captain Thiago Silva out, Germany should win.

Even with Neymar they would not have won.  I tried streaming and listened to a different set of commentators and they were saying that Germany played smart.  As soon as Mats Hummels got the goal Low switched his team's spacing.  He stuck to the same formation in case they needed to counter but opted to make the wing midfield players stand back and Lahm in particular switch from a midfield role to a right back, which is his best position.  The Brazilian defense is still spotty for me and if Low opts to start Klose again, David Luiz would have his hands full...
