AC Ryan or Mede8er... or... (?)
« on: Jul 30, 2014 at 04:01 PM »
I have a first version WDTV Live, and it's getting a little long in the tooth. Can't seem to make it play bluray remux files (30 to 40 GB files).

It is networked (wired).

I play to a 1080p projector.

Main use: play my files from several NAS drives, and play it smoothly, with excellent quality.

With some files, I find my first-gen WDTV Live to play it a little grainy. Also, it refuses to play 40GB (blu ray remux) that are in my NAS drives. File too big?

I really don't mind getting the latest version of the WDTV Live if that is all I need. I also do not know if AC Ryan or Mede8er would play it with better quality? And play all my files smoothly (most of my other files are .mkv matroska files).

Suggestions?

(also, if just between the ACRyan and Mede8er, what are the pros and cons of each vis-a-vis each other? I looked at Popcorn Hour and it is a tad more expensive, though cost isn't really high on the list of priorities -- I mean, if you say it is worth 2X the price or whatever, but that it is worth it, I will take a long hard look at it).

Another requirement: kids and spouse must be able to use it easily (which is why I am shying away from the HTPC route).

I have the AC Ryan Play On 3D which is the older version of the Play On HD3 and is my main media player and have no problem with it. I also have the Mede8er 400x2s which is also ok except that the remote is too bulky while the AC Ryan's slender. You may still consider other brands so long as you get their top of the line variant which should pose less problems compared to the entry level models which are more likely prone to display quirks. But of course this is not always true he he.

Go for the AC Ryan Play On HD3, top of the line media player. Comes with Built in wifi, gigabyte LAN, can work as a NAS, plays 3D very well, compatible with more movie and music files then other media player. Plays Dolby TruHD and DTS HD. Works great with 50 gig bluray ISO. Picture and sound quality are amazing.

New firmware upgrades every few months. Very easy to use menu system.

If you are on a budget, you can also consider the AC Ryan Play On HD2 (lacks built in wifi and not 3D compatible)

Yeah, I guess I better go visit Manoj... last time I checked, though, you didn't have the Mini HD3 (I really have no need to attach a hard drive, as all my movies are in various NAS drives anyway). But, if that's the only thing you have, it'll probably be only P1k to P2k (at most) pricier than the Mini HD3 (assuming you guys bring that in as well).

I do like that AC Ryan seems to update their firmware often.

I recently got the mede8er med450x2s. For me it is enough for me. I don't like 3D so never bother getting one that is capable. It's a small size media player so you can only insert a 2.5" hard drive. Two usb slots to insert external hard drive. So this unit can play both internal and external HDD

Yes the remote is bulky but it does not bother me since it's very functional.

The interface is good. I like the way how I can organize my movies with it.

I might try AC Ryan in the future if I set-up another mini home theater since I hear many good things about it.

I got my AC Ryan mini 3 HD. Why does it hang whenever the 1 TB portable drive is being accessed? It freezes in the directory listing and need to power up unit to restart. It starts to read data after that.

Any idea why this happens? My 1 TB has still around 130 GB free space.

Thanks in advance for your comments.

Try reinstalling the firmware. You can get it from www.acryan.com. That should solve the problem.

We're eyeing this specific model of Mede8er.  May I know what the max internal HDD this media player can read?
Keep the FAITH!  Pump up the ANIMO!

Hi Sanjay,

I am glad that you like the AC Ryan Play on HD2. You can view photos by using the file manager on the menu and looking for the subdirectory that the photos are kept in.
