UTP Cat5e
« on: Sep 20, 2014 at 08:57 PM »
Hi, anyone used a DIY speaker cable using UTP Cat5e?

I have build 2 version of speaker cable.

3cable braided

And

6cables -  2 twist x 3 braid

From the two builds I can't really hear the difference. Maybe because I don't own a high end gears and don't have an expensive cable to serve as my reference.

May I ask to those who use UTP cable to kindly share your build and impression.

Thanks

IME, braided cables tend to tame the highs, very useful if you want to make the sound fuller and have more bottom end.

This is probably due to the phenomenon that extensive wire braiding increases the wire capacitance per foot. A little caution is practiced when using braided wires because some amplifier don't want too much capacitance present at it's output which tends to make them oscillate, worse case scenario is you end up with a busted output.

Cheers

Yun nga din ang nasa isip ko. Longer wires tend to have more capacitance.

@nogo: Try mo din muna compare different brands of cables. Then kung may narinig kang difference, tsaka mo i-try ang UTP cables mo.

Thanks sir  jojoD and sir Nelson for your inputs.
Yes sir jojo,  I have read about the capacitance seems to be higher on braided cables. Yun ang malaking concern ko. I have tried these cables for 5months now,  wala naman ako napansin na problema sa system ko and wala akong narinig na humming from the speakers at high volume but with no input signals.

I guess your amp is safe sir. Alternatively, you may also want to try your braided CAT5e as interconnects.

Enjoy your braiding sir.

Natagal lang yung pagbalat ng wires at saka termination in which ako mismo gagawa.☺☺

that is called "job enrichment" considering na very boring ang trabaho nila, risky pa at mababa ang sahod..
thanks to you for giving them a new dimension, diversion pala...;)

I made this cat5 as speaker cable last night and i see the big difference from my ordinary cable playing audio, switching channel A to B and B to A. Ang linaw at lumilitaw ang boses sa DIY ko compared sa ordinary cable.

My receiver have 2 speaker input A & B and switch button.

I installed Left speaker together w/ ordinary cable to A input & Right speaker attached w/ my DIY cat5 network cable to B input. then test it by switching over and over again.
