I found myself watching both Ten Comandments and Exodus last week.  Comparison is strained.  I was more watchful/mindful of the actors performances.  Yul Bryner was just incomparable in his sarcasms with Anne Baxter's Nefretiri. Those were the days when dialogue meant more than special effects. Charlton Heston was just over the top as Moses but more down to earth as a Prince of Egypt.  Vincent Price was just delightfully evil, Edward G Robinson was a bit annoying. The theatricality was somehow engaging. When I was in high school, watching the parting of the red sea at the Roman Super Cinerama in CM Recto took my breath away before picking up my jaw on the floor.  Now in high definition, I was almost laughing.

On the other other hand, Exodus was just lifeless, Un-engaging, even with its fantastic depiction of the Plagues.  At least it elicited some laughs when the high priestess tried to clean up the bloodied Nile river and finally ending up being hanged.  And if there was something unbelievable in it, it was Rameses and Moses surviving the Tsunami as if they just fell into a Jacuzzi tub.  The director wanted the Moses story to be as scientific as possible but nobody survives being hit directly by a 100-foot tsunami.  The idea that the parting of the red sea somehow had natural explanation is not new.  I remember an Italian production of "Moses" with Burt Lancaster in the lead with about the same idea.

I missed the staff of Moses turning to snakes when he confronted Rameses.  Did I miss that on Exodus?

A word about the actors.  John Turturo as Seti the great was perhaps the only actor in that movie that was credible for me, and entertaining. Better than Sir Cedric Hardwicke in the Ten commandments. (Apart from the boy who played God.).  But for me, no one can replace Charlton Heston in that role, not even Burt Lancaster. And Yul Bryner was just perfect an adversary.  Today, sorry to say, but there is not a single actor or actress that can even approach the really bigger than the screen personas of the old hollywood. Christian Bale can't define the role.  They could have cast Johnny Depp or Russel Crowe and they still wouldn't be able to hack it.

Over the weekend, I also watched the following:

(1) Solomon and Sheba, with Yul Bryner (with real hair) and Gina Lollobrigida in the lead roles.
(2) David and Bathsheba, with Gregory Peck and Susan Hayward
(3) Salome, with Stewart Granger and Rita Hayworth
(4) Ben Hur, with Charlton Heston and Stephen Boyd
(5) The Robe, with Richard Burton, Victor Mature and Jean Simmons

And of course, my Lent would not be complete without the unabridged "The Passion of the Christ."  You really should read Blessed Anne Catherine Emmerich's The Dolorous Passion of our Lord Jesus Christ before watching this movie.  Because after reading it, the Gibson's movie would be tame and less violent.

Not watched but on annual rotation:
(1) Quo Vadis, with Peter Ustinov and Robert Taylor
(2) The Greatest Story Ever Told, with Max Von Sydow as Christ
(3) The Last Temptation of Christ, with Wilhelm Dafoe as Christ
(4) Samson and Delilah, with Victor Mature and Hedy Lamarr

Watched early during the week
"The Son of God"

;)   Have you seen the new remaster?  Maganda ang restoration:

The Ten Commandments Blu-ray Review
Cinema legend, Blu-ray excellence.

Reviewed by Martin Liebman, March 11, 2011

In a word? Gorgeous. Paramount's Blu-ray release of The Ten Commandments is a magnificent sight to behold on Blu-ray.

...The image is incredibly crisp and nicely detailed even at a distance; depth of field is fantastic, too, and the transfer is capable of revealing sharp and intricate textures far off into the back end of the frame. Colors are breathtaking; bright blues, natural greens as seen in foliage, and even the varied earthen colors that are prominent in the film are all wonderfully rendered. Flesh tones enjoy exceptional neutrality, and black levels are generally strong.

...All said, this is a breathtaking transfer. If Paramount's 1080p transfer doesn't bring a tear to the eye of die hard film enthusiasts craving to see epic classics loving restored and presented to this level of excellence, then nothing will.

I watched this last night. mahaba yun movie pero maganda siya. Suprisingly, even my 14 yr. old daughter enjoyed it (minus the special effects of the fire). Maayos din naman ang pagkaka-remastered.

Not exactly a Bible movie, but related.

Now showing in local cinemas....

IGNACIO DE LOYOLA

JESCOM FILMS PHILIPPINES presents the feature film IGNACIO DE LOYOLA starring Andreas Muñoz, Javier Godino, and Julio Perillan. This is a modern and very human take on the story of St. Ignatius of Loyola, the founder of the Jesuits, often called 'The Saint of Second Chances.'

As a brash, hot-headed soldier in a time of political upheaval in Spain, the young Iñigo went from living a life of brutal violence and debauchery, to becoming one of the greatest saints in the history of the Church.

This film chronicles Iñigo's torturous struggle to turn from darkness to light—a struggle that nearly destroyed him, but also gave him the key to a spiritual weapon that continues to save lives to this very day.

Produced by Jesuit Communications Philippines (JesCom), IGNACIO DE LOYOLA was shot on location over two months in the northern regions of Spain.

Very good movie.  I like his line, "just one more God" ... this is the right attitude in evangelism.

"I'm Not Ashamed"

A real life story of one of the victims of the Columbine School massacre and how she has touched many lives. Very inspiring movie. It clearly shows that bearing witness for Jesus can lead people to get to know God better.

Sir @emorej2015, I think you're referring to that other family of the Malarkeys. Alex Malarkey is the boy who recanted his story in the book The Boy Who Came Back From Heaven, published in 2010.

The other book from the Burpo family became the basis for the film Heaven Is For Real. The Burpo book, also published in 2010, was based on a boy's accounts. His name is Colton Burpo. As far as I know, Colton stands by the story in his book.

At any rate, I liked the Heaven Is For Real movie. Great cinematography, too.

Must see ito especially for millennials. It offers a good explanation as to why God allows bad things to happen in this world.
