IR remote is more important for me, since I want to be able to use one universal remote for all HT components.

Is it true that the IR remote and/or IR receiver has a very limited range?  Users say IR response is inconsistent from 2.5 meters or more away, even at a direct line of sight, using fully charged batteries.

On my WDTV, the IR remote can be pointed at the ceiling from more than 3 meters away and still produce normal response.

Minix seems to like cramming in the high tech features while ignoring the basics.

they also released a new Minix with Intel processor and Windows 8.1 OS -

http://gameonegadget.com/minix-neo-z64.html

not sure if which one has the better HW, the Intel version has more built in SSD storage, 32GB instead of 16GB, but appears to be lagging on graphics, only supporting 1080p

Windows 8.1 would have more flexibility however ... basically an HTPC
