phono upgrade path
« on: Jan 19, 2015 at 10:30 AM »
Guys, in general, what's the upgrade path that would give the most sonic difference,  changing cartridges or changing phono preamp? TIA

I think it's subjective that depends on type and price range of either side.

from my experience, the cartridge will give you the most sonic difference may it be good or bad. Phono is also a factor. it will hold or release the full potential of your cartridge.  :)

Hi. Yup, subjective nga. But I'm a TT newbie so I would like to solicit the input of more knowledgable or more experienced members. The question is a bit generalized para Wala munang brand or model (pero yun ang kasunod, hehe)

Based on experience, one thing I would recommend is to save up and buy a decent system first kung desidido ka na mag vinyl.

I would have saves quite a bit of money in taking a step back and trying to get a decent set that would allow me to spend more on records vs constantly wondering kung ok yung sound na or may gaganda pa. . .

That being said, I think getting a Rega RP3 and a matching phono stage in the 10k-20k range (Musical Fidelity/Pro-Ject/Rega/Lehmann) would pretty much satisfy you until the next upgrade. . .

Stay clear lang of those all-in-one na binebenta.  Very cute and they do serve their purpose, but that's a vinyl dead end (no chance of upgrading/tweaking the sound).

Study your present cartridge and phono preamp combo and change the weaker link first. One could be limiting the performance of the other - change that one first.  You'll probably need to do home auditions to determine this or you can trust the online reviews.  :)

In my experience both cart and phono preamp have equally huge impact on your sound.

Ok, I'm not very knowledgable with very limited experience in TT. After owning few units of different carts and preamps, in every change brings new sound signature. As others already mentioned that both are equally important part in the chain.

This one is the practical upgrade.... It will not cost you more but the improvemt is really enjoyable than your present cart/stage can offer.....

A decent turntable and phono stage combination will make the best of the cartridge that you will eye for.

The potential of a cartridge will only be harnessed or heard if your turntable and phono stage is well picked.

for me doc, phono first ang upgrade path mo, you cant use an mc low cart using your rega phono. a lehman black cube se is a very good phono stage, unless you want a tube phono preamp. kung galing kang at95, skip ka na ng mm cart. you need at least a benz gold or silver o kya denon dl103r o ortofon salsa or mc super. the chepest upgede would be, kung may makita ka na cinemag o kya pre love na MF SUT3 para saksak mo na lang sa rega phono mo, pwede ka na gamit low compliance cart. other than this path,

eto na talaga........mm/mc phono stage then low compliance cart po.
WCH CM U?
