Rega RP1 Upgrade Paths
« on: Feb 03, 2015 at 11:37 PM »
Very happy with the turntable...but like any true pinoydvd member SARS always comes just want to be ready when it does ;D so what are the options for upgrades?

These are the ones I'm looking at: platter and sub-platter upgrades from Groovetracer, upgrade the phono-preamp and possibly the cartridge to the Elys 2 (but i won't do this one until the bias 2 gives out)

Those listed above will set me back around $800....would it make sense to just upgrade to a new turntable completely?

I upgraded the cartridge on my RP1 to Denon DL-110 and white rubber belt. Those have been the only upgrades since.

I am not comfortable messing with the bearing and the sub-platter....I may just upgrade the platter to a Delrin platter, the black one so the RP1 still retains the rega look

Will upgrading the phono preamp yield substantial improvements to the sound? Say from the rega fono mini to the rega fono MM?

There should be an improvement, on how much would be cart dependent. If you have a really good cart, the more you feel the improvement from the phono pre.

This is where a good tone arm comes into play, because your cart selection is limited by your tone arm.

Cheers :)

Better to change the turntable as a whole.

I had a Rega P1 and a Goldring GR2. The P1 was limited. I couldn't get the Tracking force of most cartridges over 1.4g. The GR2 was better because I can mount heavier cartridges. My new Lenco GL75 refurbished by Analog Source is a different beast.

The Lenco with a cheapo DJ Shure M447 it smokes the Goldring GR2 with more expensive Shure V15 IV with Jico, and Nagaoka MP110.
