DVD Storage (ie. Racks, Shelves, etc.)
« on: Feb 16, 2004 at 05:00 AM »
I have a dvd rack that holds about 80 dvds. I am looking for something that is wall mountable, holds over 90 dvd's, and allows me to align my dvds horizontally across the shelf, BUT... I do not want to stack them. I want the collection to go left to right on each shelf, with the spines of each dvd vertical.

I have looked high and low, all over the web and in many retail stores and have not found something that really catches my eye. If anyone has a good solution, please let me know. Or if you'd like to simply share what it is that you use, go for it, perhaps I'll find what I like with someone else's choice!

Thanks a ton, I really hope to see some good ideas :)

Mr. DC, I basically have the same problem.  We all have different ideas as to how one would like to arrange our DVDs.  I suggest you look at those who do made-to-order.  At least you will get what you want, though at times they do get expensive.  Better yet, if you have carpenters available, you can let them make one to your specifications, you just have to buy the materials that you want.  Its a lot cheaper that way (I think).

Good luck!!!

By the way, does anyone know what kind of wood is advisable to use if you decided to make one from scratch?  ???

I have attended one seminar discussing the advantage of using metal shelves for books over wooden ones.

In wooden shelves, if the acidity of the wood is greater than the acidity of the paper of books, the tendency is for the excess acidity of the wood to transfer to the books. and vice versa.

Now, I'm wondering if this can happen to DVDs also. Can acidity of the wood used for a shelf affect the DVDs, Can it be a catalyst for DVD rot?  ??? ???

i would recommend using Formica Laminate or HPL (high pressure laminate) boards - this material is synthetic therefore non acidic and does not scratch your DVDs.  have a prefab cabinet specialist make an entertainment cabinet for you, i can recommend one if you like.  :)

may i suggest that you store your DVDs in a DVD drawer about 6.5" high clearance, this way, there is no clutter and you don't have to worry about dust which easily accumulates on your collection when you store it in a standard display shelf.  the problem with dust, is that whenever you have to clean your DVDs, wiping sometimes contribute to fine scratches in the cover, and exposure of the case can even make your DVD case brittle and the clear plastic dull:(

besides, with a DVD drawer you can even keep a dehumidifier inside to prevent moisture from damaging your precious DVDs, this is how i store mine.  ;)

hi, i just recently saw a DVD rack - tower at Powerbooks (Glorietta - near Cinderella) that fits single amaray cases (horizontally) and is a push-to-eject feature, kakaiba!  ;)

Yeah I saw that too. Very cool... ;D The advice given by the members here should be considered. It's hard to go cheap on your storage especially for the high price we pay for our DVDs. I personally store mine in a cabinet which i bought at Makro (a very cheap one at that) which stores 228 DVDs in Amaray cases. Just modified a few things like the laminate of the shelves and added an additional shelf and VOILA! a customized shelf to my liking. Next step is the glass door for the cabinet so that it wouldn't accumulate dust. Word of advice for those just looking for their storage...1)canvas every place you can so that you don't miss out on anything, 2) no need to rush, you might end up buying something you might regret 3) use you're imagination, you can always modify something acceptable to something you really like...i suggest going aroud True Value for some minor modifications and 4) do take care of your DVDs so that they don't fall prey to DVD rot. Hope this helps ;D

i just saw a really nice "CD & DVD" storage box in the Handyman area of Robinson's Place Pioneer.  it can contain 18 DVD's (regular amaray) and comes in clear transparent or bluish transparent design so you can see what DVD's you have inside without having to open it.
it even has a snap lock on both end of the cover.
its also stackable and only cost P189.75.  definitely a good buy to store your CD's or DVD's.
its about time they came out with DVD containers.   ;D

There are also similar CD+DVD plastic storage boxes in SM Department Store (Megamall). It is more expensive P230 to P250 but has a larger capacity of 27 DVDs (or 48 vcds). You can check it out at the basement (plastics section). However, I passed by last week and there are no stocks available. I'll try to post pics of the case.

I use these for my CDs, fits around 38 full size cd cases, best of all, you can see right through it for better handling.

Available at Robinson's Handyman Got mine at the branch at the new Waltermart in Pasong Tamo.

Here's another type of DVD Plastic Storage wherein you are able to store the dvds in an upright position 2 ways.  With this arrangement, I was able to store 23 dvds.  I'm sure you can fit more if wala yung mga dvds with slipcases  :)

Got this today for P209.75 in SM Southmall.  We don't have space in our dvd cabinet na so this is a good alternative while saving up for another custom made dvd cabinet.  Naku, gastos sa dvds, gastos pa ulit sa lalagyan ng dvds  ;D Not complaining though  ;D ;D ;D or was I  ??? HahHAhHAha Haaaaay !

Those plastic DVD storage containers seem practical enough if you need just one or two in the MEANTIME while a more permanent DVD shelf or drawer is being made or sourced.   Getting to one title could be a bit ceremonious especially if you had to stack one container after another.   One other important feature of DVD storage is that their titles be easily seen and accessed.  IMO, nothing beats a shelf customized for DVD for convenience. All the titles are neatly displayed and any DVD can be easily retrieved.   If dust is a problem, I suppose a front glass enclosure would minimize it.   ;D

NICE container ms. diver, but what caught my attention is the even nicer background of much more DVDs.  looks like you assigned the Disney & cartoon DVDs in the container and the rest in the shelf.  :D

this particular design looks familiar, i saw some cabinets like these in Ortigas Home Depot (along Julia Vargas st. Pasig).  It may not be specifically made for DVDs but it has adjustable shelves that allow for an excellent fit.  check it out.  ;)

I'm also looking for a nice dvd cabinet.  The best thing I think is have it tailor made or pasadya.  Sir levi is the man for the job.  After seeing his projects.  I think he can help in making a very nice dvd cabinet. :)

Thanks sirs, dvd addict din kasi ako, inspired by my previous search for decent dvd racks, can't find one that fits my idea na modern hitsura, kaya decided to make my own one. and decides to sell them na rin.  ;D

Sir Morph, you can find it sa site, same prices for all colors... may option kasi na walang light at walang cabinet door. depende sa gusto niyo, check out the technical details, it has pictures so you can get a better idea.

sa design ng aluminum, unlikely na ma-customize. kasi I had to fabricate the mold abroad and it cost me 70k for the current design of the mold pa lang.
I am having second thoughts on customizing width, kasi mostly glass siya, I can't make it too wide, kasi it may compromise the load.  The 6mm glass is more than enough for its current width.  If I would make it wider, I would have to do several more rounds of stress test, and medyo costly ang pag stress test e.  ;D

sent you both pms. :)
