Another good reference of 'must have' DVDs (just like the list of Academy Award winning best pictures) is the list of the American Film Institute (AFI) Top 100 American Films of all time, which they published in June 1998 in connection with their celebration of 100 years of moviemaking.

The following list is in accordance with the ranking of the votes that the films got from the members of AFI, thus:
