WDTV and/or Egreat + Two (2) 4-bay Probox
« on: Nov 05, 2015 at 10:28 AM »

Guys, has anyone tried this setup before? WDTV or Egreat with two (2) Probox's (both 4-bay enclosures) attached to it, with both Probox having four (4) 4TB HDDs filled with content. Would this work?

My current setup is a Probox with four (4) 4TB HDDs filled with content, attached to my media player. Sometimes with the WDTV, sometimes with my Egreat. Now, I ran out of space. Thus, instead of selling my 4bay and getting an 8bay, it might be easier, not to mention, more cost effective, if I just get another 4bay. I dont think getting HDDs with capacities higher than 4tb is the more cost efficient route given their prevailing prices right now.

Thanks.

My suggestion

Get a 4 bay NAS with external storage support and plug your probox to your choice of NAS.

Makes it all available in the network

Qnap or Synology. Not sure which model but for sure one of them has support for usb2/3 and esata. I got qnap ts220 2-bay with 2xusb3, 1xusb2, 2xesata.

I have been looking at NASes myself. Entry level 4-bay NASes from Synology, Qnap and also WD are in the 16k-18k range. You have a choice between the Synology DS416j, QNAP TS-431 and WD EX4. I'm leaning towards the QNAP except that I don't like the white color.

got the 2-bay for 10k and 4 bays cost around 15-20k.  without HDDs

alternatively, you can use open souce NAS like FreeNAS and similar on your old hardware/pc
