Sound System for Gymnasium
« on: Feb 18, 2016 at 01:22 AM »
Hi guys!

I'd just like to ask for your recommendation po since medjo noob po sa sound system. Bibili po kasi kami ng sound system para sa school gym namin for donation. The gym's size is probably 2 basketball courts na magkatabi ang lawak, 2 storey ang height, may raised stage in front and steel gate entrance so half-open ung backside.

Our budget is very tight (only around 40k) so we plan to buy sa Raon. Nung nagpunta ako sa Raon, ang suggest sakin na system is 4 na Konzert KS-655V 600W speakers (mounted on speaker stand, 1 pair sa front, 2 naka-angle sa middle), 1 Konzert AV-502B amplifier (500W) then equalizer (forgot to ask the model; any budget friendly suggestions?) and Yamaha 7-channel mixer. Ok na kaya setup na ito? Gamitin lang mostly for school ceremonies, the occasional music fest/competitions and common school programs.

Also, may nagsuggest din na mag-add ako ng 3-way crossover, but then may isa naman nagsabi na ok na ung may equalizer ako. Any thoughts on this?

Thanks guys!  :)

Get a mixer with a pre-amp/equalizer and a power amplifier
The speakers should have crossovers internally, but their too small

Music fest competions, those speakers are on the small side for that area, look for speakers with 15 inch woofers.

The Konzert 502 might be too small, you would need 2 power amp to drive 4 large speakers, 1 pair per power amp.

if you can stretch your budget a little bit try to get an active speaker either kevler or konzert. 10" 2way will do, then get a behringer mixer w/ effects. i believe mas mura sya compare sa yamaha mixer, kung mura sa raon yung yamaha just be careful maraming counterfeit product dyan. basically if you dont a have dj or well trained tech guy na mag operate nun, you dont need a equalizer anymore. sometimes pag maraming pumipihit at di marunong ala tsamba lang mas lalong nagiging worse and sound quality. a built in effects processor sa mixer is enough for echo and reverb.  Hope this will help.

Cheers,

First of all, thanks for the early and insightful replies. Btw, I added a photo of the gymnasium para mas may idea kayo what I'm working with.

Get a mixer with a pre-amp/equalizer and a power amplifier

Not sure pero kamuka ng Yamaha MG102C ung 6 channel mixer na ino-offer nila for 4k. Pero I'm sure nakita ko may built-in mic preamp and 3-band Channel EQ ung pinakita nila.

Music fest competions, those speakers are on the small side for that area, look for speakers with 15 inch woofers.

The Konzert 502 might be too small, you would need 2 power amp to drive 4 large speakers, 1 pair per power amp.

Any budget-friendly suggestions po for a speaker with 15" woofer? Ung Konzert KS-655V was offered to me for P6000/set, so around that price range sana. Regarding the Konzert 502b amplifier, inassure niya sakin na kaya daw ung 2 sets ng KS-655V. But yeah, I have my doubts din so sana may maka-verify po dito  ^-^

if you can stretch your budget a little bit try to get an active speaker either kevler or konzert. 10" 2way will do, then get a behringer mixer w/ effects.

Ung active speakers na suggest niyo iadd ko po ba on-top of nung 4 passive speakers o paltan ko ung passsive with active?

For the Behringer mixer, is this what you are suggesting: http://raon-online.com/index.php?route=product/product&path=59_68&product_id=254&limit=100

For P7000, very tempting nga ung built-in effects niya plus ung 3-year warranty ng Behringer. BTW, noob question, gano po ka-useful ang effects for the type of usage ng school gym?

basically if you dont a have dj or well trained tech guy na mag operate nun, you dont need a equalizer anymore. sometimes pag maraming pumipihit at di marunong ala tsamba lang mas lalong nagiging worse and sound quality.

Nabasa ko po kasi dati na very useful ang equalizers to correct and compensate acoustic problems, especially for acoustic hells like gymnasiums :P
How much difference po ba nagagawa ng equalizer in my setup?

At the very least, I was thinking na we can have a capable person setup the right equalizer settings na babagay sa venue and just use that as a default for cases na walang marunong.

BTW, additional questions pala:
1. Speakers stands versus Wall Mounted? I thought ok na naka-speaker stand para pwede i-store after events, since mahirap na exposed lagi sa open area plus the chaos of a school setting  >:D
Pero un nga, since naka-stand kelangan isetup at pack-up before/after events. Pro's vs con's

Again, thanks for all your inputs! Sobrang helpful niyo  ^-^

yes you can adjust every frequency w/ EQ just dont go with V setts  ;D its helpful lets say your source material like CD songs in case the quality is not good somehow you can improve it. effects processor is very useful, imagine when you sing w/o echo?  ;) flat lang sya diba parang patay ang tunog. Pansin  mo to pag videoke ka  :) maraming dsp program yung effects processor like hall effect.

Yes instead of passive, active na lang. for pro user they prepare amp then passive speaker so they can mix up every thing well but because they know how to do it. whats good w/ active, in case one speaker is busted you can still use the other one, mono nga lang pero better to have than nothing  ;D pag amp then passive, pag nasira yung amp  :( the passive wont work  ;D

Ill go with tripod stand, yes para maligpit mo after para tumagal  ;D

Medjo malaki yan sir. Baka initially, mixer, mics and megaphone speakers ka muna so you can fill the gym.  Remember gagastos ka pa sa cabling, termination, mic stands etc. Kulang na agad ang P10k mo for that. Or can use 2-way powered speakers up front, then smaller powered speakers to fill up the gym. Hindi yan sir yun maglalagay ka ng malakas na 2 front speakers tapos na. Kawawa yun malapit sa speakers unless array speakers ang fronts mo.

We had the same project for our gym a few years ago.

We opted for a pair of JBL PRX615, a Peavey Mixer and a DOD equalizer.

The JBL is awesome, it can handle anything from speech to party music;  the Peavey Mixer however is garbage.

We opted to put it on stands, and kept it in a room when not in use; but the grill still took on rust after 3(?) years. Imagine if it was left hanging permanently exposed to the elements.

Next should have been a pair of monitor speakers... but we never got there hehe

All items above including wiring and mics were all bought from Audiophile.

Thanks for all the replies. Sobrang dami kong natututunan!  ^-^

I was actually going for active speakers pero sa pagcanvass ko kasi lumalabas na mas mura ung passive+amplifier combo, so FOR NOW un muna preference namin. But we'll definitely look into it, more canvassing pa siguro.

Sir, I have the same concern last year.

Thanks for referring me to this, dami ko rin napickup! If only we have the budget you have, edi naka-JBL na rin sana kami, no questions asked ;D
Kaso krisis so tipid-tipid muna. Haha!

We opted to put it on stands, and kept it in a room when not in use; but the grill still took on rust after 3(?) years. Imagine if it was left hanging permanently exposed to the elements.

Thanks for this, now I'm fully convinced on speaker stands!

Or can use 2-way powered speakers up front, then smaller powered speakers to fill up the gym. Hindi yan sir yun maglalagay ka ng malakas na 2 front speakers tapos na. Kawawa yun malapit sa speakers unless array speakers ang fronts mo.

Eto nga po ung plan namin with a 4-speaker setup; 2 in front and 2 sa middle na naka-angle para naman di kawawa mga nasa likod. Ung width:length ratio po ng gym is around 2:3. If gantong setup mas ok nga yata na ung 2 speakers up front and 2 smaller speakers sa side (one on each side).

At the minimum anong wattage po ang hanapin ko for this 4 speaker setup? Kaya na kaya ng 2pcs 3-Way 12” 500w (Konzert KSS-12) at the front and 2pcs 3-Way 10” 500w (Konzert KSS-10) for the sides?

BTW, I saw speakers na 3-way and 2-way having the same sizes and almost the same prices. Ano po mas adviseable on my situation?

Again, thanks for the help guys!

Masmaganda tumunong ang 3-way kung properly implemented. Though madalas na nakikita ko, 2way lang because yun mga woofers naman ng pro-audio are designed to output mids din.

Sabagay for large venue applications naman di mo na rin masyado mapapansin between a 3-way and 2-way speaker.

Again, sobrang dami ko natutunan sa inyo. At this point, I'm quite convinced to have at least 2pcs 15" speakers for the main plus 2pcs 12" speakers at the sides.

Ang issue ko na lang is how much wattage ang need ko for the 15" and 12". Gusto ko sana ung 15" speaker with 1000W para wala ng problema kaso out-of-budget na. For now nakita ko lang na 15" speaker na pasok sa budget is ung Konzert KS-15 kaso 400W lang sya then ung KS-12 naman 300W lang. Tingin niyo po, how much power do I need?

Lastly, any feedback po sa AD Pro Audio na brand? Mukang ok at mura speakers nila e.

Thanks again!

Mahapdi. Haha!

Array ko pu! Hehehe.  ;D
But seriously, sa church namin uses two (2) front arrays - passive 2-way config, 2 subwoofers, and smaller powered/active monitors at the sides and back (all speakers are mounted on the ceiling to save space, except the subs).
Or baka pwede ka din: two (2) big fronts - 2-way, 2 subs, and monitors on strategic places so you don't have to overly raise the volume on the fronts just to be heard at the back since you have monitors all over and let the subwoofers do the bass duties.

Ang hirap kasi when we talk of the word "power" and "watts", madalas yan blown out of proportion ang mga ratings nila lalo na yun ibang China made na generic. best if you buy a pair of 12"ers muna to test it sa fronts kung pwede na. If yes, then buy a smaller one fr the sides. if not, then ialagay ang 12" sa sides, buy bigger fronts.

Hindi naman masyadong matakaw sa foot print ang mga speakers sir. The main reason why most big venue speakers are mounted higher than our usual home system is bacuase para the highs, which is very directional, can be angled better, downwards para masmalaki ang covered area.

O nga eh, sobrang hirap makahanap ng matinong spec sheet ng China brands. Although madalas daw nilalagay nila ung Peak Power instead na RMS para mas malaki, for marketing purposes. As much as possible I'm trying to maximize the power I can get para sa speakers, mabuti na sobra kesa kulang

Nabasa ko rin mas ok pala talaga active speakers, madami pala nagiging issues pag mali matching ng amps at passive speakers kaya were now willing to slightly stretch the budget for active. I'm looking at active 15" amps and AD Pro Audio NUX15A seems interesting:

http://raon-online.com/index.php?route=product/product&path=59_63&product_id=631

Program power is 700W. I read na program power is ung RMS o Continuous Power, tama po ba? Tapos usually "daw" ung Peak Power is around 50% more than the RMS so I'm probably looking at a 1000W speaker if this holds true.

Btw, familiar po ba kayo sa AD Pro Audio na brand? Nababasa ko lang kasi ay locally produced daw sya pero decent naman daw. Sana totoo.

Mas-ok sir ang active speakers kasi less hassle ka in matching them. Puro balanced cables lang ang tatakbo, lesser loss. You also might consider a pair of small active monitors for the stage pero ok lang kung hindi swak sa budget.

We'll see po if may budget pa. For school ceremonies naman po kasi I don't think vital ang monitors aside from kapag may live bands.

Again, thanks po sa lahat ng nagshare sa thread na ito. You were all a huge help! I'll update na lang po on what happens.

Kung for school ceremonies lang and low budget, baka yun mga megaphones mas-powerful and audible pa. Hehe! Medjo nasa mids kasi and strengths ng mga yun.
