MacGyver (Reboot)

Lucas Till is the New MacGyver in the CBS Reboot Series
March 21, 2016

It looks like the CBS reboot of ’80s action series MacGyver has found its leading man as The Hollywood Reporter brings word that 25-year-old Lucas Till, best known as Havok in the X-Men franchise, will take over the title role from Richard Dean Anderson. Joshua Boone (Fan Girl) has also joined the new MacGyver series as a regular, while George Eads (“CSI”) is set to co-star in the pilot as Lincoln, a conspiracy theorist who works for the government.

Although he’s still aboard the series as an executive producer, James Wan is no longer planning on directing the pilot episode due to a scheduling conflict. Instead David Von Ancken will take the helm.

“My initial concept was I wanted to do a young college MacGyver who went to Boston, one of the great universities, who’s really brilliant, right?” said Wan previously. “He’s so smart he could never feel like he fit into a world that is an establishment. So he’s always a bit of an outsider. He’s very crafty, he’s very smart, all kinds of science and mathematics and engineering. I wanted to put my MacGyver story around something like a ‘North by Northwest’: He gets blamed for something that he had designed, something really big that’s something everyone wanted, and now someone has weaponized it and everyone’s coming after him. He’s running for his life and he’s trying to clear his name, not quite unlike the structure of ‘Enemy of the State.’ So imagine ‘Enemy of the State’ if Will Smith had the brains of MacGyver.”

Playwright Paul Downs Colaizzo has penned the script for the new MacGyver, which sees the show’s original executive producer Henry Winkler set to return as EP with Michael Clear.

Till will next be seen reprising his role of Havok in this summer’s blockbuster X-Men: Apocalypse, and has a lead role in Paramount’s Monster Trucks.

^I liked the show best during the earlier seasons when McGyver was like a spy, with themes straight out of the Cold War.  They dropped this during later seasons.

Forget the original trailer for the pilot that was shown last May--CBS has scrapped that pilot and made lots of changes, including a new cast (only George Eads was retained, and he's now Jack Dalton, a character played by Bruce McGill in the original series) and story, as well as giving Lucas Till a decent haircut:

The new, official trailer can be viewed here:

I haven't seen the first episode yet but I watched the new trailer. My excitement in this reboot went down, way, way down. But, I guess I'll still watch the first episode and hope for the best.

Seen it. Parang di ko trip hitsura nung bagong macgyver. Parang nakakairita hanang tumatagal.

I hate the hair of the IT girl!

Walang lugar sa story yung egoy na kaibigan niya. Parang wala sa lugar sa story.

Ill see the 2nd episode pero pag di ko pa din natipuhan kakalas na ako.

The original MacGyver will be a tough act to follow.

The original McGyver was warm and emphatized with the people he helped. This McGyver seems to be a little cold and arrogant. The original McGyver used his McGyverisms only when needed. This Mcgyver seems to gloat whenever he uses his McGyverisms. He is a bit too smug and too millenial. ::)

Seems to be a trend with all these new shows and reboots. Older shows featured characters who were actually charming.

I said on my Facebook feed that I was annoyed by the voice-over and on-screen text explaining what he was doing. My friend asked me why, since the original show also had  voice over explanations. I thought about it, and my answer was: It worked fine for the original MacGyver since he was very simpatico, while this new McGyver is just really douchey.

I think Mac became less douchey after the opening act. Some plot points became questionable like, why are Riley and Jack suddenly so friendly at the end when she had some really deep animosity towards him in the beginning?

Patricia (Pete) and Jack's relationship looks to bring some comic relief in future episodes. I'll give this a couple more episodes.

pilot was okay. don't expect much just enjoy the ride. mac can be arrogant and beaming with personality a trait not shown in the original as I think they are starting from the beginning albeit not like the original which there were a backstory to how he became the man.

Haha! Ok naman siya. Ang diffenrce lang kasi, ngayon sa advent of information, may mga ginagawa si Macgyver na hindi na tayo mapapa-wow.

Baka kailangan maging cocky because of the age of Macgyver. Plus baka it would be easier to relate sa mga 20s & 30s.

For me yun 1st episode is pwede na. Yun 2nd episode, super simple ng story talaga. Walang twist man lang or something. Para ako nanuod ng simple 1990s na show. Hehe! Well I guess maybe i just had high expectations too because this was a childhood favorite.
