this is good news, in light of the shenanigans of some theaters and pre-MMFF movies.

Pila ngayon (11:30 am) sa Trinoma para sa MMFF.

If the rumor that oro was initailly going to be nora as the kapitana but nixed it because of talent fee issues were true then she really made a mistake in chosing the wrong film

(Please forgive me for the poor quality of the photo. It was a mad rush outside Cinema 3.)

Was fortunate enough to watch Sunday Beauty Queen, this year's MMFF best picture winner, at the same time as the cast and filmmaker (wearing black on the lower left).

The protagonists were in tears after the showing (1:40 pm at Trinoma), it was pretty clear that they've just seen the documentary for the first time. Some of the employers were also there and they were also emotional after the screening.

Quite a special moment to witness for a film fan such as myself. Something I won't likely forget for a long time.

Forgot to mention that somewhere in there is Bienvenido Lumbera, who was also moved to tears.

I heard they even shot a few scenes! But yeah, they had to replace her.

mukhang maganda ang seklusyon ah.

I also read that the cut being shown in MMFF was toned down to get an R-13 rating. The international cut is more intense and more graphic daw which is insane because the R-13 cut is pretty darn scary already.

Seklusyon is ok until that confusing ending, lots of questions unanswered.

Also watched Saving Sally, may after credits short so stay for a while. Now where to watch Sunday Beauty Queen?

Yes, it's thought-provoking on matters of religion and faith. Like The Exorcist.

Seklusyon - The story is thought provoking indeed. I even think the ending is fine. A creepy and atmospheric horror film that can inspire discussion regarding faith and the holiness and/or humanity of the priesthood. Excellent technical qualities. I'm just not sure regarding the win of Phoebe Walker in the "Best Actress in a Supporting Role" category.

Sunday Beauty Queen: humanity amidst unfairness, courage above despair, community beyond competitions. This one made me laugh, weep, angry, and hopeful more than any manufactured melodrama or rom-com ever did.

And it was heartwarming to meet the OFWs in the film at Trinoma yesterday.

Saving Sally -- The animation, camera work, and the sets were impressive but the screenplay and some of the acting seemed a bit flat for me. It almost felt like the filmmakers were more focused on the visual side of the production as opposed to pushing the story (and characters) into more complex relationships and situations.

What the viewer ends up watching is a juvenile love story instead of (what might have been) a more compelling coming-of-age portrayal of a young, but talented, comic book artist.

Observant viewers will get to see lots of easter eggs and quite a few Filipino pop culture references. There's also a short animated film after the credits.

Seklusyon -- Erik Matti channels his inner Shyamalan in this period film set in post-war Southern Luzon. Great lighting and camera work deliver the right mood and mindset to unleash the inner demons of the protagonists. There is almost a theatrical feel to how the actors and the cameras interact with the sets, mixing well with the mindgames that come with each scene.

Rhed Bustamante is a revelation in her role as Anghela while Lou Veloso steals all the scenes where he is present. Other than these two, the rest of the cast try their best to keep pace but ultimately fall short. There are also a few anachronisms in the film, but I doubt if the general viewing public will notice.

Matti chose to be very deliberate with the build up of suspense in the scenes. The plot isn't as organic as, say, OTJ, as he spends little time building the world where this film is set. Truth be told, Seklusyon won't give you nightmares, but it will make you look more closely at the dark shadows of your home.

Sunday Beauty Queen - Nothing exactly new in its real life stories of OFWs, but this well-made documentary is nevertheless moving & emotional. A sensitive & fitting tribute to the country's "new heroes".
