Mark, i-hijack ko lang itong thread mo ;)

Reviving an old thread.

Please recommend a reliable service center. My Yamaha receiver (locally purchased, out of warranty already) conked out last night. It didn't overheat, no burnt odor, no current spikes; it just turned off by itself without warning. Looks like the protection circuitry kicked in since the standby indicator blinks continuously whenever I try to turn the power on.

Thanks.

This was the post I left 3 months ago in another thread. My quest for a reliable repair shop started with a fairly known one for quite some time now. First impression ko pa lang dun sa technician who made the pre-diagnosis, sabit na kaagad. Considering they are advertising themselves as an authorized service center, the guy didn't know how to initialize Yamaha's built-in diagnostic mode. After showing him which combination of  buttons to press, the display showed PS PRT quickly followed by DC PRT. I was dumbfounded when he suggested to take the unit to another service center; he even admitted to me that they send complicated cases to this shop to do the repair work. Off I went to the referred shop on that same day. The tech who attended to me was more knowledgeable this time; he ran the same diagnostic tool and after a few more tinkering, he asked me to leave the receiver for 2 weeks to examine it further. So I made a follow up after a week went by; one of the female staff took my call. She said they need to replace the receiver's whole digital board. That's fine with me, but I almost fell off from where I was sitting because of what she said later on: first, it would take at least 3 months or so for the required component to be imported & delivered, but there's no guarantee that it will arrive at all; second, the quoted price she gave me was a BIG joke, so I replied that she should order a replacement part, not a brand spanking new Aventage receiver. Her first statement already made me cringed, more so with the second one. I received the formal quotation thru email the same day and the impact never once diminished as I read it a few times just to be sure I was reading it right and confirm what I already knew. After a more careful PinoyDVD search, it finally pointed me to the right direction. I pulled out my receiver the next day and brought it directly to markcrenz's abode.  After a few pleasantries, he told me it would probably take him some time to check and fix it since there's a long queue of various electronic gears from PinoyDVD members and nonmembers alike. True enough, there was a tall stack of fairly new receivers as well as vintage amps & tuners in various state of disrepair sitting idly in one corner of the sala. Sabi ko sa sarili ko: surely, he would not get the telltale positive feedbacks plus those pile of gears begging for his attention if he is not competent in his craft. So I agreed to leave my receiver to Mark's trusty, capable hands. It would be a long while before my kids and I will get to watch movies together in theater-like ambience again. In my case, it was the first time I would reluctantly watch movies at home. They are bland and lifeless when seen without the benefit of an AV receiver, a vital part of HT hobby which brought me countless hours of enjoyment since 1999.
The most awaited day finally came; I picked up my receiver yesterday. The line was indeed long since it took Mark almost 3 months but it was well worth waiting for. It turned out there was no need to replace the whole board after all; Mark painstakingly tested each component part blindly and manually at first since there was no reference/service manual available online; a similar one was found but it was for an earlier model. This process continued until this week to ensure all the offending parts were replaced.
So I went home and immediately started the challenging, bone and backbreaking task of arranging the gears and reattaching the various connections in the elaborate rear ports and terminals; it took me a tiring and painful half day to do so and this was just for setting up. After configuring & calibrating and later on testing it with the all-time favorite Saving Private Ryan, I knew right away that my baby is back home  :D

Thanks again Mark for resurrecting my beloved Aventage!

Chiming in for this audio-gear wizard. This man is the Gandalf of audio electronics. He made my Marantz PM80a sing again (or should I say growl again, since I listen mostly to metal). Now I am enjoying my stereo music with the kick it deserves. Thanks bro! You're my idol!  8)

Hello Sir,

Ask ko lang kung nagrerepair ka ng Kenwood receiver (Kenwood KRF-V6080D). Pag turn on ko nag titrigger yung protection mode ng paulit ulit until sa di na siya bumubukas :(

Hi Sir Mark,

Its been a while since my last visit here, medyo busy na. Anyway, can you fix my polkaudio sub dsw pro500, its almost 3 years since nawalan ng power and wala rin time mapaaus. Also my denon avr which i forgot the model already. Actually mahirap talaga dito sa amin since Palawan po ako. Sana hindi pa huli ang lahat, hehe.

Looking forward for your reply. Thanks

Kaya naman siguro. If you can remove the plate amp assembly of the Polk you can save a lot on the 2 way shipping costs.

I'd appreciate if you can attach or PM a history and defects of your receiver too, it would help a lot on the diagnostics and repair.

Hi Sir Mark,
Pagawa ko po sana yung Anthem Statement D2v 3D Surround Sound Processor. May power po kaso yung mga functions nya to play video and music ay wala na. Ayaw na pong gumana. Hope na may pag asa po sa magic wand nyo.
