I see nothing wrong with using pro-audio amps if the input volts of the amp matches or within the range of the output source. usually naman alam ko, very wide ang voltage input ng pro audio amps.

Crown XLS DriveCore 2 series malinis. It's a good alternative to domestic power amps. If you look at benches, it looks better than some of the cheaper home power amps. Sikat siya sa US for bigger home theaters.

If you went to the Polk room in last year's HiFi show, it was running on this power amp.

Yamaha and Pioneer spec 2 are also among the favorites....

the thing with pro-amps is their high voltage gain, around x40 while the super leach amps had just x 19, as you know gain bandwidth product is pretty much set with the choice of devices and operating points, so wide frequency response come with low gains.....but then again it is really up to the designer but this basic premise holds water...

this and others are the topics most of the time in our facebook groups, but class H is also popular, we are trying to run a group buy for 1.5kw class H amp boards....

guys as far away as cebu and mindanao are making those...

we have member here, jlesterp, who sells international, his class d designs...
there are now over a thousand pinoy diy'ers designing and making their own boards for amplifiers...whereas a few years back there were just a handful.....

Can the Crown XLS compete in terms of SQ with Rotel power amps ?

professional amps are made for power, and in most cases the gains are high at 40 to 100, compared to the super leach with just a gain of x19...

for subwoofers, where bandwidth is severely limited, then these amps will do..

in general do not expect too much from these professional amps...except power...

No. Frequency response will not be flat due to the exorbitant gain pro amps have. Power is plenty but bandwidth is limited.

if you hack the pro amps to have the same voltage gain as the Rotels, then maybe, but i will not bet on it...

we have an on going project, the Musang Amp, a spin off the honeybadger, using the 5200/1943 output pairs and +-85 volts dc rails can net you over 300 watts into 8 ohms and about 500 watts into 4 ohms....massive 18kg power traffo....this is one heck of an amp and many diy'ers are now making them with about 60 boards professionally made in china....

one massive power amp...

Can this compare with HIFI power amps or this is just all about power ?

we used to DIY a lot of power amps noong uso uso pa yung mga mobile sound system.
I still have schematics/ manual of the Altec & BGW we used to make, for other AMPS sikat yung 2N3055 output noon hehehe
meron ding isang DIY AMP sa raon that time that does 300W/Ch@8ohms, forgot the name.

we also did pre-amps & electronic crossover, pero ngayon parang mas mahal na ang mag DIY kasi daming classA kuno na amp galing middle kingdom.

for RAW power & rumble those power amp's are a monster to use
But for Fidelity, better get one that's built for it.
