'Y: The Last Man' Moving Forward at FX With Pilot Order

More than a year after tapping Michael Green as showrunner and nearly three after landing at FX, the basic cable network is moving full steam ahead with its adaptation of Brian K. Vaughan's beloved comic book series Y: The Last Man.

FX on Thursday announced that it has handed out a formal pilot order and enlisted Aida Mashaka Croal (Jessica Jones, Turn) to serve as co-showrunner alongside Green, with Melina Matsoukas (Insecure, Master of None, Beyonce: Formation) on board to direct the highly anticipated drama.

Y: The Last Man ranks as one of the most critically acclaimed comic book series of all time. The DC Comics/Vertigo title was first launched in 2002 and revolves around Yorick Brown — the last surviving human with a Y chromosome — and his Capuchin monkey, Ampersand. The series follows escape artist Yorick after a mysterious plague as he sets out to find what might have wiped out the male chromosome. The series, written and created by Vaughan and artist Pia Guerra, ran for 60 issues and has been collected in multiple graphic novels. Here's FX's formal description of the potential series: "All of the men are dead. But one. Y traverses a world of women — exploring gender, race, class and survival."

Green and Croal will co-showrun and exec produce alongside Matsoukas, Color Force's Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson (FX's American Crime Story and Pose), and Vaughan. The team has been working for months on the script, with FX pulling the trigger on the pilot order.

FX’s Y: The Last Man Series Sets Eliza Clark as New Showrunner

Y: The Last Man series has found a new showrunner in Eliza Clark (Animal Kingdom, The Killing, Extant), who will also write and executive produce the upcoming FX show titled Y. Clark is replacing Michael Green as showrunner for Y, which is based on the graphic novels by Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra.

“A decade ago I devoured the complete Y: The Last Man series cover to cover, imagining how it might take shape on screen. It introduced me to the amazing work of Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra and the complex, fascinating world of ‘Y.’ I’m thrilled to tell this story and to be working with this immensely talented cast,” said Clark.

“Eliza Clark is an enormously talented writer and producer whose ambitious vision for Y will only enhance the mystique and allure of this powerful story,” added Nick Grad, co-president of original programming for FX Entertainment. “We are thrilled to have her on board and partner with this stellar cast, Brian, Nina, Brad, and Melina.”

Barry Keoghan will star in the series as Yorick Brown, an escape artist who becomes the only surviving man after a catastrophic plague wipes out the rest of the human males. Yorick and his Capuchin monkey, Ampersand, find themselves in a greatly changed world that is now dominated by women.

Diane Lane co-stars in the series as Yorick’s mother Senator Jennifer Brown. Imogen Poots is also on the show as Yorick’s sister Hero Brown, with Lashana Lynch as Agent 355. Amber Tamblyn will portray Mariette Callows, the daughter of the president of the United States. Juliana Canfield and Marin Ireland also have roles on the series.

Clark will executive produce alongside Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson of Color Force. Vaughan will EP alongside Melina Matsoukas, who directed the pilot. Nellie Reed serves as producer for the FX Productions series.

Y is scheduled to premiere in 2020.

Creator Brian K. Vaughan Offers Update On Y: The Last Man Series

Comic book creator Brian K. Vaughan took to Instagram to share a short update on the FX adaptation of Y: The Last Man, assuring fans that despite the recent changes in the show’s management, Y is still on track for its scheduled debut in 2020.

“The show must go on! Sorry for two Hollywood sellout posts in one day, but I just got back from the writers’ room for Y (still coming to FX in 2020!), and I’m very pleased to say the series is in excellent hands with new showrunner Eliza Clark and her intimidating squad of all-stars. TV is g****mn hard, and if the last 17 years have taught co-creator Pia Guerra and me anything, it’s that our story is particularly challenging to adapt, so I’m very grateful to everyone who’s helped get Yorick & Co. this far, especially Michael Green and Aïda Croal. Anyway, stay tuned, very good (monkey) sh*t coming your way soon.”

'Y: The Last Man' Star Barry Keoghan Being Recast in FX Drama

Barry Keoghan, who was poised to star as Yorick Brown — the last living man on Earth — is exiting the beleaguered title, and FX will recast the central role in the drama series that has already suffered a showrunner change. Sources say FX and new showrunner Eliza Clark (Animal Kingdom) are already making offers to young actors to replace Keoghan, who broke out after feature Dunkirk. Sources say Keoghan is the only actor being recast in the series. Keoghan has been attached to the series since July 2018.

Ordered to series in 2018, Y was to star Keoghan as Yorick Brown, the last surviving human with a Y chromosome. The project follows escape artist Yorick after a mysterious plague as he sets out to find what might have wiped out the male chromosome. Diane Lane, Imogen Poots, Lashana Lynch, Juliana Canfield, Marin Ireland and Amber Tamblyn round out the cast. The series was poised to make its FX debut this year, though now with Keoghan's central scenes having to be reshot, that will without a doubt derail those plans.

Currently rated 68% at Rotten Tomatoes with 22 critic reviews counted.

Critics Consensus:  Y: The Last Man makes a few key updates to its source material and boasts a number of incredible performances, but this highly anticipated adaptation can't help but feel like a bit of a letdown in a world full of dystopian realities.

‘Y: The Last Man’ Canceled by FX

“Y: The Last Man” has been canceled by FX, weeks before its first season debuts its final episode on FX on Hulu.

The news was shared by “Y: The Last Man” showrunner Eliza Clark through her Twitter on Sunday. In her post, Clark thanks FX and the show’s creative team for their partnership on the project. She also expresses hope that “Y: The Last Man” will be able to continue its run at a different network.

“We have learned that we will not be moving forward with FX on Hulu for Season 2 of ‘Y: The Last Man.’ I have never in my life been more committed to a story, and there is so much more left to tell,” Clark wrote. “‘We had a gender diverse team of brilliant artists, led by women at almost every corner of our production… It is the most collaborative, creatively fulfilling and beautiful thing I have ever been a part of. We don’t want it to end.”
