There is a new poll on the frontpage that some of the distributors are interested in.  If you'd like to expound on your vote, please post it here.

well maybe not 'lower price' yung price i find justifiable naman eh. AS LONG AS THE PRODUCT IS SATISFACTORY ENOUGH.

pero pretty much everything dun sa poll are the same reasons why people opt for buying r1s. if the r3 people can't satisfy that.. then the r1 people are still gonna stay with r1s, diba?

R3 purchases are in fact, increasing according to the distributors though maybe not at the rate they'd want them to. I'm guessing but I doubt that the issue these days is really people choosing R1s over R3s -- it's convincing consumers to buy original R3 over pirated DVDs.

Personally, I think that R3 DVDs have come a long way since I started patronizing them in the late 90s. Those were the days when releases often had truncated features, and/or 2-disc releases became 1-disc versions. They were also expensive, with the average price hovering around P800.

Overall, there's been a definite improvement in the local R3 market, but the challenge is to bring consumer demand to the level of VCD purchases. Based on the last AstroPlus Sale where people hauling 10-20 DVDs was not an uncommon sight, I'd say that price is still the deciding factor.

Only Viva improved.
Magna and Warner lowered their overall product quality.

just an opinion.

I believe the reason R3 sales is increasing is that the overall consumption of dvd is increasing.  Simply put, the pie got bigger.  If R3 sales increased, it is my opinion that sales of pdvd and R1 dvds increased as well, maybe even at a higher pace that R3, though that's a mere conjecture.  With the prices of generic machines going as low as P2,500, there really are no reason left not to try out the dvd format.  Even the branded players are getting cheaper compared to a few years ago when dvd were just being introduced.

my two cents

I agree.  The market pie got bigger. And is getting bigger.  Last year none of my staff had DVD players.  Now all of them have.  Thanks to me.   ;D  Unfortunately for R3 vendors, all my staff buy pdiscs.   ;D  No thanks to me.  ;D

But really now, I also agree with mongaddi, only the Viva releases improved, but only a few. One look at those Magna titles with "Kulubot"  cases is a turn off.  Even pirated cases look better.  And their prices haven't gone down.  They still have those ridiculous P899 for old titles that nobody is getting.  Then they come out with the sale price of P750 that still do not interest me because of their crappy packaging.  Then they have this P499 of old titles that I still don't buy because they don't interest me at all.  OTH Warner's have a more reasonable pricing for most of their old titles.  Most of my R3 purchases were Warner's.

And that poll on the fornt page begs to be answered ALL of the Above.  Nothing short of that will restore fully my R3 patronage.

before.I prefer region 3 warner release than region 1.because
     1. same features as region 1
     2. cheaper than region 1
     3. same quality
     4.  before.realeses of region 3 were manufatured in usa.the disc and the snaper case.and has ivy hill print at the back of the carton.

but now.like the recent releses.parang they cut their cost by using low quality amaray type keep cases (by the way.its the dvd fans who want scrap the snaper case and move to keep case.on my opinion.i like the snaper case) and also no inserts.

On magna's case.  back then the universal releases are under columbia tri-star and have good packaging and uses amaray keep case.but now its like a pirated copy.bad casing and bad packaging.this goes the same to paramount release.malambot ang keep case.  but i like all the release of columbia tri-star.you'll know if its an import.there is a small cut para malagyan ng vrb seal.

On viva's case. I would prefer to buy region 1.most of the tiltles from viva are from fox, mgm, disney.  on  most cases lack features if its release from region 3 or under viva.

so i would prefer to buy region 3 if
1. good packaging
2. low price
3. same as region 1 release.

features and packaging should be equivalent to the R1 counterpart... pero in the very remote possibility that they do improve, benta ko muna lahat ng R1 ko before buying R3... kinda O.C. in that way.  ;D

These would really entice me to buy R3 Philippine releases...

 - Special Features unique to the Philippines (or asia) ..
 - Better inserts, packaging and artworks (ala Korean)
 - Freebies and promos
 - Without the VRB stickers
 - Limited Editions..
 - Price adjustments
 - Easy Return/exchange policies when damaged or product lacks some inserts/discs/etc..

 ;D ;D

I didn't mind buying R3s before as long as they were identical in appearance and features to the R1 discs (that was before the HT was connected to the R1-locked player). The thing is, and I'm sure a lot of people agree with me here, is that many of the R1 releases are better in appearance and features than their R3 counterparts. Case in point: Almost Famous Bootleg Cut. And the Viva releases (although I hear they're improving). Plus, a lot of the R1 editions simply aren't available in R3! Just look at Fight Club and Se7en, where if I'm not mistaken the only versions released here were the single-disc bare-bones editions. And what about Gladiator and Fast and the Furious that were released in R3 without DTS??  ???

I don't buy that they're skimping on extra features to save on production costs because R3s haven't really been that significantly cheaper than R1s.

Plus lahat nung sinabi ni brod hemisphere  ;D

I usually buy only R1's if the title are not available in R3 especially since their cover design looks better.
But I buy R3's only if they have the same or better features than the R1's
for example:

1.) Italian Job Collection (R3) which is in a Digipack Casing and is much better looking than the R1. - BY THE WAY I'M STILL LOOKING FOR THIS TITLE!!! WHOEVER WANTS TO RESELL THEIR COPY PLS!!!  ;D
I've been looking for this since Astroplus' sale last year from P1,750 naging P650 lang.  I didn't buy it right away since I had to sell my 2 separate Italian Job R1 versions which I got from Amazon.  :'(

2.) I-Robot (R3) which is 2 disc compared to R1 that is single.

3.) most romance or comedy R3's - wala naman kasing special features na maipakita.  ;D

lately nga R3's packaging seems to have improved a lot.  :)
