4 ohms to 8 ohms
« on: Oct 19, 2018 at 09:27 AM »
Hi guys,

I have an old amp with the following speaker system:

System 1 (L&R) ------ 4-16ohms
System 2 (L&R)------- 4-16ohms
System 1 + 2 --------- 8-16ohms

I am using an 8ohms pair speakers in system 1;
Now, I want to hook a pair of 4ohms car audio speaker in system 2. Please advise me if i can do this. I know there will be no problem if it is a pair of 8ohms.

How can i make the 4ohms speakers into 8ohms? Thanks.

you can place them in series but that would equate to only 1 Speaker - + - +, tie the middle + to the - of the other speaker.

impedance is less of a concern with modern amps, the thing is that all speakers should have the same power ratings!
if spkr A is rated 300W & spkr B is only rated 50W then it's a no no Unless you can control the output separately or do not go beyond the max of the lower spkr rating.

pwede  ;D

or buy a 4 ohm 10W9(or higher) wirewound resistor then series that with your 4 ohms speaker, cheaper solution but with compromise

Again - you can directly connect both those 4 ohms speakers to system 2, just don't go beyond their rated output.

fyi
