‘Dark Tower’ Pilot at Amazon Casts Jasper Pääkkönen, Sam Strike

The pilot for the planned “Dark Tower” series adaptation currently in the works at Amazon has cast two lead roles.

Sources say that Jasper Pääkkönen and Sam Strike have both been cast in the pilot, which is based on the Stephen King book series of the same name. Strike will play Roland Deschain, also known as The Gunslinger, while Pääkkönen is believed to be playing The Man in Black, also known as Marten Broadcloak and Randall Flagg. The series is said to tell the story of how Roland became a gunslinger and his first encounter with the villainous Man in Black.

Amazon declined to comment.

Glen Mazzara is attached as the executive producer and showrunner. The series was originally intended to tie in to the long-gestating 2017 film that starred Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey, but the plan now is for the series to be a more faithful adaptation of the book series.

Game of Thrones’ Jerome Flynn to Star in Amazon’s Dark Tower Series

Jerome Flynn, best known for his role as Bronn in HBO’s Game of Thrones, has been cast in Amazon’s Dark Tower series adaptation of Stephen King’s novels. The actor confirmed the news in an interview with The Mirror (via Birth.Movies.Death).

Flynn, whose credits also include Ripper Street, Badger, and the upcoming John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum, will join the previously announced Jasper Pääkkönen (Vikings) and Sam Strike (Nightflyers) in the series. Flynn will play a cowboy in Amazon’s Dark Tower, which checks off the actor’s bucket list item of having always wanted to play a cowboy.

The series was originally planned as a tie-in to the 2017 The Dark Tower film that stared Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey. Amazon shifted gears and is now planning for the series to be a more faithful adaptation of the book series.

The Dark Tower series is produced by Media Rights Capital (MRC). Glen Mazzara will serve as showrunner and executive producer.

‘The Dark Tower’ Series Adaptation Not Going Forward At Amazon

Amazon Studios has passed on The Dark Tower pilot. The adaptation of Stephen King’s book came from executive producer/showrunner Glen Mazzara and MRC. The production company is shopping two original scripts that were the basis for the pilot pickup, sources said.

The Dark Tower has always been considered very difficult to adapt to the screen, which explains the title’s lengthy road to being made as a feature by Sony and a pilot by Amazon. Largely because of the challenges translating the material, Amazon opted to go with a pilot vs. straight-to-series on a big-scale, big-budget production like The Dark Tower. In the end, I hear Amazon executives felt like the pilot was not on the level of other large-scope elevated genre series the streamer has in production/pre-production like Wheel Of Time and The Lord Of the Rings.
