'Sandman' TV Series From Neil Gaiman, David Goyer — With Huge Price Tag — a Go at Netflix

Neil Gaiman's beloved Vertigo comic Sandman is finally coming to the screen.

More than three years after New Line's failed attempt to turn the graphic novel into a feature film, Netflix has signed what sources describe as a massive financial deal with Warner Bros. Television to adapt the best-seller into a live-action TV series. Sources familiar with the deal note that it is the most expensive TV series that DC Entertainment has ever done.

Allan Heinberg (Wonder Woman, ABC's The Catch, Grey's Anatomy) is set to write and serve as showrunner on the straight-to-series drama. Gaiman, who created the ongoing monthly comic, will exec produce alongside David Goyer. Gaiman and Goyer were both attached to New Line's most recent attempts to adapt Sandman for the big screen.

Netflix and Warners declined comment as a formal deal has not yet closed. An episode count was not immediately available.

The Netflix take represents the first Sandman TV series after numerous efforts to adapt Gaiman's horror, fantasy and mythology tale about Morpheus, the Lord of Dreams, and the Endless, the powerful group of siblings that includes Destiny, Death, Destruction, Despair, Desire and Delirium (as well as Dream).

This will be hard to execute properly. I hope they do justice to it.

Yup, they have been trying to adapt the comics since the 1990s with all attempts eventually failing due to one thing or another. Let's see how this goes with Netflix.

Neil Gaiman Promises Netflix Sandman Series Will Remain Faithful To Comics

Since it’s announcement in July, anticipation has been through the roof for Netflix’s series adaptation of the classic Vertigo comic character The Sandman. Creator of the character Neil Gaiman has promised that his team is working hard to faithfully bring the story to the screen.

In an AMA session on Reddit (via CBR), the 58-year-old author not only assured fans that the adaptation would remain faithful in spirit to the source material, but that it would also follow the comics’ story properly. Wonder Woman co-writer Allan Heinberg will serve as showrunner with both Gaiman and David Goyer executive producing.

There have been countless attempts to turn the seminal Sandman comics into live-action adaptations before, dating back into the 90s when the series began. Recently Joseph Gordon-Levitt was attached to star in and direct a feature film adaptation at WB’s New Line Cinema before that version failed to materialize.

Neil Gaiman Reveals Planning Underway for The Sandman Season 2

Fans have been anxiously waiting for more news on the upcoming series adaptation of the acclaimed graphic novel series The Sandman and while we haven’t even heard who will be portraying the title character, creator Neil Gaiman has revealed plans are already underway for a second season.

In an interview with Radio Times, Gaiman, who is co-creating the series alongside showrunner Allan Heinberg (Wonder Woman) and David S. Goyer (Terminator: Dark Fate), revealed that development is running smoothly on the 11-episode first season and it’s not stopping there.

“There are three of us, showrunner Heinberg, Goyer and me, and we’ve just finished writing the first episode, and plotting and breaking down the first two seasons, so we’ll see what happens next,” Gaiman said.

Neil Gaiman Reveals Netflix’s The Sandman Series Has Been Put on Hold

It has already been over five months since we last heard an update about Netflix‘s long-awaited series adaptation of Vertigo Comic’s The Sandman, and now creator Neil Gaiman took to Tumblr to answer a fan’s question about the long-in-development series. Like all of Netflix’s current projects right now, the award-winning author has revealed that The Sandman series has also been affected by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and has been put on hold for the time being.

However, Gaiman assures fans that this is only a minor setback and that development on the series will still continue after things have gotten back to normal again. In addition, he also revealed the status of the pre-production before it went to temporary suspension, confirming that castings had already started with scripts for the first season already written.

"It’s going really well, except it’s kind of hibernating right now until people start making TV again. The scripts for the first season are written, casting had started, directors hired, sets were being built. Everything was ready to go into production, and then we moved into a pause. As soon as the world is ready to make TV drama, Sandman will move smoothly back into being made. In the meantime, we are taking the opportunity to get the scripts as good as we can."

The Sandman: Neil Gaiman Confirms Netflix Series’ 2021 Setting

In a recent interview with Digital Spy, creator Neil Gaiman revealed a new detail about Netflix‘s long-awaited series adaptation of Vertigo Comic’s The Sandman, confirming that the show’s storyline will be set in 2021. His confirmation actually echoed his previous statement about making a few changes or updates on the popular story and characters in order to fit into the current era.

“We’re working with Netflix, we were meant to start shooting at the end of May,” Gaiman shared. “Given this COVID world, everything is on pause. The Netflix version is going to begin in 2021, so Morpheus will have been kept prisoner in the Netflix version for 105 years rather than 70 years.”

Netflix's The Sandman Adds Game of Thrones Star Gwendoline Christie

Netflix's The Sandman TV series has reportedly added Game of Thrones star Gwendoline Christie to its cast.

According to Discussing Film, Christie has joined the show's ensemble in an as-yet-unknown role.

Netflix's 'Sandman' Cast Revealed

A year and a half after being picked up to series, Netflix has revealed the cast for its big-budget adaptation of Neil Gaiman's beloved Sandman.

Tom Sturridge will topline the drama based on Gaiman's DC Comics series, playing Dream, the Lord of the Dreaming. Gwendoline Christie co-stars as Lucifer, Ruller of Hell. Vivienne Acheampong, Boyd Holbrook, Charles Dance, Asim Chaudhry and Sanjeeve Bhaskar round out the dark fantasy drama.

Here's how Netflix describes its live-action Sandman: "A rich blend of modern myth and dark fantasy in which contemporary fiction, historical drama and legend are seamlessly interwoven, The Sandman follows the people and places affected by Morpheus, the Dream King, as he mends the cosmic — and human — mistakes he's made during his vast existence."

Dance will portray Roderick Burgess, a charlatan, blackmailer and magician.

Acheampong (The Witches) plays Lucienne, the chief librarian and trusted guardian of Dream's realm. Holbrook (Narcos) is set as The Corinthian, an escaped nightmare who wishes to taste all that the world has in store. Chaudhry (Black Mirror: Bandersnatch) and Bhaskar (Yesterday) take on the roles of Abel and Cain, the first victim and the first predator, who are residents and loyal subjects of the Dream Realm.

Gaiman (American Gods) and Allan Heinberg (Wonder Woman, Grey's Anatomy) are co-writing the series, with the latter on board as showrunner. David S. Goyer (Batman Begins, Foundation) exec produces the drama from Warner Bros. Television.

A lot of heads turned when they cast Gwendoline Christie (not a dude) as Lucifer. I think it's actually fine but there still has to be a bit of fan service as Sandman would not have crossed over to the mainstream without its loyal and nerdy fanbase.

A generation of fans (the Gen X kind) will be triggered if they cast Death and Delirium wrong.  It doesn't have to be a goth gal and Tori Amos, respectively, but they do have to do justice to boyish fantasies from the early 90's. 8)

Neil Gaiman Confirms the End of Filming on The Sandman’s First Season

While answering questions on his official Tumblr page earlier this week, Neil Gaiman casually mentioned that the streamer has “finished principal photography” on the first season of the highly-anticipated series based on his acclaimed graphic novels.

With filming out of the way, the show is currently in the throes of post-production. According to Gaiman, this means fans must now sit back and wait while the series’ movers and shakers render the visual effects, compose the score, and accomplish a variety of other behind-the-scenes tasks. Gaiman couldn’t offer any specifics as to when we might actually see some footage. However, he seems to believe that the show stays true to the spirit of the comics that inspired it. He also singled out the work of Tom Sturridge, who leads The Sandman’s cast as Dream/Morpheus.

“It feels like Sandman,” added Gaiman. “I don’t know if that means that people who watch TV will like it – although I hope they will – but I suspect that if you like Sandman and you want to see it on the screen, then you’ll like this. (I also think Tom Sturridge will be a star after season one of Sandman drops.)”

Neil Gaiman Says The Sandman is About ‘Surprising You,’

Fans are anxiously awaiting any news regarding Netflix’s upcoming adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s classic comic book series The Sandman. Gaiman himself was able to reveal more some information about the show in an interview with Empire Magazine in addition to releasing a new image from it.

“You watch Episode 1 and think, ‘Oh, I get this thing: it’s like Downton Abbey, but with magic,’” Gaiman said while discussing the many tones and styles explored in the comic, and subsequently the upcoming series. “Then you’ll be wondering, ‘What the hell is this?’ by Episode 2, when you’re meeting Gregory The Gargoyle in The Dreaming. Episode 5 is about as dark and traumatic as anything is ever gonna get, then you’ve got Episode 6, which is probably the most feel-good of all the episodes.”

He then spoke about how each episode is different, unlike other series.

“If you didn’t like an episode of Game Of Thrones, you probably won’t like any other episode of Game Of Thrones,” he said. “With Sandman, it’s all about surprising you. It’s all about reinventing itself. It’s all about taking you on a journey you’ve not been on before.”

Alongside the interview, Gaiman also shared a new image from the series, showcasing Tom Sturridge as Dream standing alongside Vivienne Acheampong’s librarian Lucienne.

SYNOPSIS:

There is another world that waits for all of us when we close our eyes and sleep — a place called the Dreaming, where The Sandman, Master of Dreams (Tom Sturridge), gives shape to all of our deepest fears and fantasies. But when Dream is unexpectedly captured and held prisoner for a century, his absence sets off a series of events that will change both the dreaming and waking worlds forever. To restore order, Dream must journey across different worlds and timelines to mend the mistakes he’s made during his vast existence, revisiting old friends and foes, and meeting new entities — both cosmic and human — along the way.

Based on the beloved award-winning DC comic series written by Neil Gaiman, THE SANDMAN is a rich, character-driven blend of myth and dark fantasy woven together over the course of ten epic chapters following Dream’s many adventures. Developed and executive produced by Gaiman, showrunner Allan Heinberg, and David S. Goyer.
