Marvel's WandaVision (Disney+)
« on: Jul 21, 2019 at 10:50 AM »
Marvel Studios revealed new details about the upcoming television series based on Vision and Scarlet Witch, known as WandaVision for Disney Plus.

WandaVision will reunite Wanda Maximoff and Vision, with Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany reprising their roles, in spring 2021. The show will be set after the events of Avengers: Endgame, so it’s not clear how Vision — who was killed in Infinity War — will be revived.

WandaVision will also feature cameos from other Marvel characters, including Monica Rambeau from Captain Marvel, who will be all grown up and played by Teyonah Parris (Mad Men, If Beale Street Could Talk). WandaVision will also tie into another Marvel movie, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which will hit theaters May 7, 2021.

WandaVision’s 2020 Release Date

Disney CEO Bob Iger has confirmed the official release date for Disney+’s forthcoming WandaVision. Originally set for a Spring 2021 launch, the Elisabeth Olson and Paul Bettany-led MCU series will now be making its highly-anticipated debut later this year in December, which is much earlier than the previous scheduled release date.

Set in the 1950s, WandaVision will follow the story of Elizabeth Olson and Paul Bettany’s superhero characters Scarlet Witch and Vision. The series blends the style of classic sitcoms with the Marvel Cinematic Universe in which Wanda Maximoff and Vision—two super-powered beings living their ideal suburban lives—begin to suspect that everything is not as it seems.

It has also been confirmed through previously released set photos that the series will be featuring the Sentient World Observation and Response Department or better known as S.W.O.R.D. which is a subdivision of S.H.I.E.L.D. that deals with alien threats that jeopardize world security.  However, it is still unclear whether prominent S.W.O.R.D. members such as S.W.O.R.D. leader Abigail Brand will also appear in the series or not but this would definitely mark the live-action debut of the department and the first Marvel property from the Fox-Disney merger that will be integrated into Marvel Studios’ Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The series will also see the return of Kat Dennings to the MCU, reprising her role as Darcy Lewis which she last portrayed in 2013’s Thor: The Dark World along with Randall Park returning as FBI Agent Jimmy Woo from Ant-Man and the Wasp. It will also feature MCU newcomers Kathryn Hahn and Teyonah Parris as the grown-up version of Monica Rambeau, a character who first made her appearance in last year’s Captain Marvel.

WandaVision is expected to be the second show that Marvel Studios is producing for Disney+ with Jac Schaeffer (Captain Marvel) serving as its producer, showrunner and head writer. While Matt Shakman is directing the series.

WandaVision: Evan Peters Reportedly Cast in a Key Role

According to Murphy’s Multiverse, X-Men alum Evan Peters has reportedly signed on for a key role in Disney+‘s highly-anticipated MCU series WandaVision. Further details about his character are currently under wraps but if this casting news is proven true, it’s very interesting to note that Peters has previously portrayed the role of Quicksilver a.k.a Wanda’s brother in Fox’s last three X-Men films. His portrayal of the character was positively received by fans making him an instant fan-favorite. It would be a very wild choice for Marvel Studios if they indeed decided to cast him as Quicksilver especially given the circulating rumors that he is set to appear in the upcoming series.

Evan Peters is best known as a series regular in Ryan Murphy’s long-running horror anthology series American Horror Story. He also appeared in the Matthew Vaughn’s superhero films Kick-Ass starring alongside Aaron Taylor-Johnson, who also played the role of Quicksilver in Avengers: Age of Ultron.

WandaVision: First Episode Was Filmed In Front of Live Studio Audience

In a recent interview with EW, WandaVision showrunner Jac Schaeffer and executive producer Kevin Feige along with lead stars Paul Bettany and Elizabeth Olsen opened up about Disney+’s highly-anticipated MCU series, revealing that the first episode was filmed in front of a live studio audience on the iconic Blondie Street at Warner Bros. Ranch in Burbank.

“The show is a love letter to the golden age of television,” Schaeffer said. “We’re paying tribute and honoring all of these incredible shows and people who came before us, [but] we’re also trying to blaze new territory.”

“I would get ready for the day and watch some old sitcom because I couldn’t take the news anymore,” Feige said on what inspired him to adopt a sitcom style format for an MCU series. “Getting ready to go to set over the last few years, I kept thinking of how influential these programs were on our society and on myself, and how certainly I was using it as an escape from reality where things could be tied up in a nice bow in 30 minutes.”

Executive producer Mary Livanos added, “It’s really incredible to be able to tell a long-form story the way the comics did. In a sense, [a TV show] is a multi-issue comic-book run, which is something that, from the Marvel development side, we totally do understand.”

On filming in front of a live studio audience, Bettany and Olsen admitted that they were very nervous about it first as they had to rehearsed their entrances and exits with a special-effects team using wires and camera techniques that were used in classic sitcoms such as Bewitched.

“It was insanity,” Olsen said. “There was something very meta for my own life because I would visit those tapings as a kid, where my sisters were working [on Full House].”

“We were all so high by the end of it, we wanted to keep on running the show,” Bettany said. “Maybe take it out on tour or something. WandaVision on ice.”

WandaVision: Kevin Feige Teases the Origins of Scarlet Witch’s Powers

When Wanda and Pietro Maximoff made their MCU debut in Avengers: Age of Ultron, fans were initially introduced to the explanation that the twins’ superpowers came from the Mind Stone due to a Hydra experiment that they participated in. However, it seems like there’s something more to the twins’ origin story than what was first revealed, especially when it has been recently confirmed in The Wakanda Files: A Technological Exploration of the Avengers and Beyond book that the reason the Maximoff siblings were chosen for the experiments was because of their unique number of genetic markers.

In a recent interview with Empire Magazine, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has opened up about Disney+’s highly-anticipated MCU series WandaVision, confirming that the series will indeed touch upon the true origin story of Scarlet Witch’s untapped powers.

“If you look at the Infinity Saga, I don’t think any single person has gone through more pain and trauma than Wanda Maximoff. And no character seems to be as powerful as Wanda Maximoff. And no character has a power-set that is as ill-defined and unexplored as Wanda Maximoff,” Feige said. “So it seemed exploring that would be worthwhile post-Endgame. Who else is aware of that power? Where did it come from? Did the Mind Stone unlock it?”

This revelation is very exciting as Scarlet Witch’s origin story might potentially lead to the confirmation of the popular House of M theory where, in the comics, Wanda was the one who created the mutants. Since the announcement of WandaVision, fans have been speculating that the series would be one of the ways that Marvel Studios could introduce the existence of the mutants within the MCU.
