Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi (Disney+)

Ewan McGregor Teases Production Start Date For Obi-Wan Kenobi Series

Ewan McGregor has confirmed a few details about Disney+‘s forthcoming Star Wars prequel series, centered on McGregor’s Obi-Wan Kenobi from the Star Wars prequel trilogy. He revealed that the untitled Obi-Wan Kenobi series will have a total of six-hour long episodes and will also begin its production in the summer of 2020.

“The storyline sits between Episode III and Episode IV,” McGregor said. “The Jedi Order was falling apart. It will be interesting to take a character we know in a way and show him – Well, his arc will be quite interesting, I think, dealing with that the fact that all the Jedi were slaughtered with the end of Episode III. It’s quite something to get over.”

The new series will take place eight years after the events of Revenge of the Sith, where we last saw Obi-Wan delivering the infant Luke Skywalker to his Tatooine homestead.

The series will be written by Hossein Amini (The Alienist, Drive) and directed by Deborah Chow. Chow, Amini, and McGregor will serve as Executive Producers alongside Kathleen Kennedy, Tracey Seaward (The Queen) and John Swartz (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story). Jason McGatlin, Lucasfilm’s Executive Vice President Production, will serve as co-producer.

Ewan McGregor Confirms Kenobi Was Originally One Film

Two years ago, director Stephen Daldry was supposedly lined up to direct a standalone Obi-Wan film. Unfortunately, the dismal box office performance of Solo: A Star Wars Story put all the spinoff movies on hold. Today ComingSoon.net got to speak to Ewan McGregor at the Doctor Sleep junket, where he confirmed that before it was going to be a Disney+ series it was indeed going to be only a single film.

“It wasn’t always going to be a series, not initially,” McGregor confirmed. “When we first started talking about, that wasn’t really in the cards but everything’s changed so much, so quickly. It’s really exciting that it is now. I’m really into the idea to be able to tell the story over several hours instead of just one hit. I think it’s going to be quite cool.”

Consisting of six hour-long episodes, the new series will take place eight years after the events of Revenge of the Sith, where we last saw Obi-Wan delivering the infant Luke Skywalker to his Tatooine homestead. It is expected to begin its production in summer 2020.

Obi-Wan Kenobi Series on Hold as Calls Go Out for New Scripts

Disney+ and Lucasfilm’s Star Wars series centered on Obi-Wan Kenobi has been put on hold as the companies attempt a retooling, multiple sources tell The Hollywood Reporter. The effort, in which Ewan McGregor is set to reprise his role of the famed Jedi Knight, was in the throes of preproduction.

The project had Hossein Amini writing and a director in Deborah Chow, who became the first-ever female Star Wars director thanks to her work on Disney+’s buzzy series The Mandalorian. Sources say that the show was even screen-testing actors opposite McGregor.

Sources tell THR that the scripts — only two were written — and story became an issue and that the entire package has been jettisoned. Lucasfilm is now on the hunt for a new writer to pen the series. At the same time, sources say the project is being reconfigured from six episodes to four.

Obi-Wan Kenobi Disney Plus Series Enlists Joby Harold as New Writer

Joby Harold has been tapped to write the upcoming Obi-Wan Kenobi series at Disney Plus, Variety has learned exclusively from sources.

Harold takes over writing the highly-anticipated series from Hossein Amini, who left the project back in January. This would mark Harold’s first time writing for a television series. He most recently executive produced “John Wick: Chapter 3 — Parabellum” and is also writing the script for Zack Snyder’s film “Army of the Dead.” He was one of two writers, alongside James Vanderbilt, who was selected to develop a new take on the “Transformers” franchise for Paramount.

Obi-Wan Kenobi Disney Plus Series to Begin Filming in March, Says Ewan McGregor

Ewan McGregor will soon be donning Obi-Wan Kenobi’s Jedi robes once again.

During a Zoom appearance on the BBC’s “The Graham Norton Show” Friday night, McGregor revealed that Disney Plus’ untitled Obi-Wan Kenobi series is finally set to begin filming in March of 2021.

“It’s the Obi-Wan Kenobi story, I suppose. It’s not all me, but it certainly will be a lot of me, which is good,” McGregor said of the show. “We start shooting it in March next year.”

Though the Obi-Wan-centric series was first announced back in Aug. 2019 and meant to begin filming the next year, the shoot was delayed when writer Hossein Amini left the project in Jan. 2020.

Amini was eventually replaced by Joby Harold in April of 2020, and script rewrites forced production to be delayed into 2021. Then, the COVID-19 pandemic struck. Deborah Chow, who directed part of Disney Plus’ “The Mandalorian,” remains at the helm of the series.

Obi-Wan Kenobi Series: ‘Game Of Thrones’ & ‘For Life’ Star Indira Varma Set To Join Disney+ ‘Star Wars’ Spinoff

Game Of Thrones and For Life star Indira Varma is set to join Disney+’s upcoming Obi-Wan Kenobi series, we understand.

Star Wars prequel stars Ewan McGregor and Hayden Christensen are already aboard for the series, which McGregor recently teased was getting underway in the spring.

Varma’s character details are under wraps, as are plot details on the drama, which is based on McGregor’s prequel movie character. Christensen will reprise his role as Darth Vader.

The show is expected to take place between the final movie of George Lucas’s prequels, Revenge Of The Sith, and A New Hope.

‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’: Disney+ Star Wars Series Adds ‘PEN15’ Star Maya Erskine

Disney+ Star Wars series Obi-Wan Kenobi is adding PEN15 star and co-creator Maya Erskine.

The Insecure and Scoob! actress will have a supporting role in at least three episodes, we hear. Erskine has been nominated for multiple WGA Awards and a 2019 Emmy for Hulu Original comedy PEN15, which she fronts with Anna Konkle.

Previously announced for Obi-Wan Kenobi are Ewan McGregor (as Obi-Wan), Hayden Christen (as Darth Vader), Joel Edgerton, Bonnie Piesse, Moses Ingram, Kumail Nanjiani, Indira Varma (as we first revealed), Rupert Friend, O’Shea Jackson Jr., Sung Kang, Simone Kessell and Benny Safdie.

Plot details are being kept under wraps on the series, which takes place 10 years after Revenge Of The Sith and nine years before A New Hope, in an era after the Jedi Order has been all but wiped out. Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy has teased the “rematch of the century”, presumably between Obi-Wan and his pupil-turned-enemy Vader.

Currently in pre-production and due to shoot any day now, the series is directed by Deborah Chow, who directed two episodes of The Mandalorian, Season 1. It’ll consist of six hour-long episodes.

Ewan McGregor gave an update regarding his highly-anticipated Obi-Wan Kenobi series. During the 2021 Emmys, while speaking to the press backstage, McGregor went on to confirm that production on Lucasfilm’s newest live-action Star Wars series for Disney+ has finally been completed after nearly five months of filming in Los Angeles. He also continues to hype up the project, teasing that fans won’t be disappointed, especially with the cool new technology that they’ve employed during its production.

“We finished shooting our series, and it was really, really good fun,” McGregor said. “I really enjoyed working with [director/executive producer] Deborah Chow, and I think it will not disappoint. The new technology that we employed doing it is cool, and it was a different experience than making the original three films that I did.”

Obi-Wan Kenobi: Rupert Friend Rumored To Be Playing Grand Inquisitor in the Star Wars Series

According to a report from Bespin Bulletin, it is rumored that Emmy nominee Rupert Friend (Homeland, Hitman: Agent 47) could be playing the villainous Grand Inquisitor in Disney+’s upcoming live-action Star Wars series, Obi-Wan Kenobi. The character initially comes from the animated series Star Wars: Rebels, where Darth Vader tasked the Grand Inquisitor to hunt down any surviving Jedi Knights.

The Star Wars site explains that the Grand Inquisitor is a Pau’an Jedi hunter with dark-side Force powers, who followed Vader’s orders to “seek out fugitive Jedi and Force-sensitive youths, preventing them from becoming a threat to the Empire.”

Bespin Bulletin further adds that their sources mentioned that “there are at least three Inquisitors” with Moses Ingram reportedly playing one along with Sung Kang.

John Williams Returns to ‘Star Wars’ Universe with ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’ Theme

More than two years after completing his ninth “Star Wars” movie, composer John Williams is returning to the Jedi fold with a theme for “Obi-Wan Kenobi,” Variety has learned.

Williams has written the musical signature for the continuing adventures of the character played by Ewan McGregor, airing on Disney Plus beginning May 25. He recorded last week with a Los Angeles orchestra under tight security, sources say.

It is a coup for both Lucasfilm and Disney, considering the five-time Oscar winner rarely composes for television.

No word yet as to who will be scoring the six individual episodes, which are believed to be recording in London.

Flea to Star in Disney+ Series Obi-Wan Kenobi

According to a recent report from Star Wars News Net, Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist and legendary musician Flea is set to star in the upcoming Disney+ series Obi-Wan Kenobi.

While cameos and surprises have been teased for the highly anticipated upcoming series, the report notes that Flea will appear “wielding a cool-looking blaster.” It’s unclear exactly what capacity Flea will have in the upcoming series, but the report implies that he will likely come into contact with Obi-Wan, or at the very least feature somewhat heavily in an episode.

The musician is no stranger to the acting world, as Flea has appeared in a variety of movies throughout his long career including Back to the Future, The Big Lebowski, and most recently in 2017’s Baby Driver. However, if true, this will be Flea’s first official appearance in a Star Wars property.
