MMFF 2019
« on: Dec 30, 2019 at 12:18 AM »
The first of maybe two or three reviews.

Culion (Alvin Yapan) *** - This film is about three different women living in Culion, which was a leper colony during the American colonization of the Philippines before World War II. I feel like there are a couple of films fighting each other in this one film. One is an excellent drama about the plight of lepers during this period in history but it has moments of unnecessary melodrama that's way too on the nose in its big emotional moments. It does feel a bit compromised because this was made as an entry to the Metro Manila Film Festival, a film festival designed to appeal to the masses. There is a great film in there somewhere. That said, the performances are great and it's beautifully shot.

Mindanao (Brillante Mendoza) **1/2 - A Muslim woman cares for her young daughter who is stricken with cancer while her husband is off fighting Islamic militants as a soldier. Just like the other Metro Manila Film Festival entry, this film feels like a compromise in order to placate the masses. Director Brillante Mendoza's aesthetic here feels quite more mainstream than his previous films even though he's still tackling similar themes. There are also fantasy animated sequences peppered in all throughout the film in the form of a bedtime story being to the dying child but it honestly feels almost shoe-horned because someone said, "We have to make this entertaining for the kids!" I'm willing to bet that's exactly what happened. But it's not a bad film. It's watchable and it has its moments but it's not Mendoza's best work.

I see. One can surmise the reasons for that but do the filmmakers and studios really value such consolations?

^I remember there was once a year when nobody actually won best picture.  Not sure if there was a second place either but there wasn't a first place for sure.

Sunod (Carlo Ledesma) *** - A single mother takes a job as a call center agent to help pay for her sickly daughter's medical expsenses. But the call center is located in an old building with a mysterious past. Then spooky things happen. This is the best entry of the Metro Manila Film Festival I've seen so far. Director Carlo Ledesma is an excellent visual filmmaker and he crafted a pretty decent horror film featuring some pretty decent scares. I found the big revelation of what exactly is going on to be just a bit muddled but all in all, it is very well-made and very well-acted which is probably the least I would ask of a Metro Manila Film Festival entry.
