DC's 'Sweet Tooth,' From Robert Downey Jr., Gets Netflix Series Pickup

DC Comics' Sweet Tooth is getting the Netflix treatment.

The streamer on Tuesday handed out an eight-episode series order for the live-action drama series based on characters from DC imprint Vertigo's Sweet Tooth and produced by Team Downey’s Robert Downey Jr. and Susan Downey.

The series is described as broad in appeal, family friendly and following the storybook adventures of Gus — part deer, part boy — who leaves his home in the forest to find the outside world ravaged by a cataclysmic event. He joins a ragtag family of humans and animal-children hybrids like himself in search of answers about this new world and the mystery behind his hybrid origins.

Jim Mickle (Hap and Leonard) and Beth Schwartz (the DC Comics-inspired CW drama Arrow) are set to pen the script, exec produce and serve as co-showrunners. The former also will direct.

Christian Convery (Beautiful Boy), Nonso Anozie (Game of Thrones), Adeel Akhtar (The Big Sick) and Will Forte (The Last Man on Earth) will star in the series, with James Brolin (Life in Pieces) attached to voice the show's narrator.

Sweet Tooth was first published in 2009 and ran for 40 issues before concluding in 2013. The series was created and drawn by Jeff Lemire.

Dania Ramirez Joins ‘Sweet Tooth’ As Netflix Series Eyes Production Start In New Zealand

Dania Ramirez (Tell Me a Story, Devious Maids) is set to co-star in Sweet Tooth, Netflix’s new drama series based on the DC Vertigo comic, which hails from Robert Downey Jr. and Susan Downey’s Team Downey, Jim Mickle, Beth Schwartz and Warner Bros. TV.

Ramirez is part of the series’ core series regular cast, which includes Christian Convery, Nonso Anozie and Adeel Akhtar. Will Forte has a recurring role, while James Brolin serves as the narrator.

The eight-episode Sweet Tooth follows the adventures of Gus (Convery) — part deer, part boy — who leaves his home in the forest to find the outside world ravaged by a cataclysmic event. He joins a ragtag family of humans and animal-children hybrids like himself in search of answers about this new world and the mystery behind his hybrid origins.

Ramirez is believed to be playing Aimee, a pioneer in the middle of dystopic America, a lone scavenger in an abandoned city, rebuilding a sustainable habitat and giving orphaned hybrids a home.

Anozie is believed to be playing Tommy Jepperd, a former professional athlete who becomes Gus’ protector; Akhtar is Dr. Singh, a scientist seeking a cure for his wife, which Gus may be the key to. Forte is believed to be playing Gus’ father.

Out today on Netflix.

Jeff Lemire's graphic novels were outstanding. Based on the trailers & marketing, this series feels more family friendly in theme. Should reach a more mainstream audience. Hope it delivers as per the early reviews and that it won't get cancelled before the whole story ends.  ;)

A very good Season 1 with timely relevant themes and characters you can emotionally and dramatically invest in. It does feel different from the books, but doesn't really matter to me. Hope it garners good enough ratings to move forwards with a Season 2.

SEASON 2 SYNOPSIS:

As a deadly new wave of the Sick bears down, Gus (Christian Convery) and a band of fellow hybrids are held prisoner by General Abbot (Neil Sandilands) and the Last Men. Looking to consolidate power by finding a cure, Abbot uses the children as fodder for the experiments of captive Dr. Aditya Singh (Adeel Akhtar), who’s racing to save his infected wife Rani (Aliza Vellani). To protect his friends, Gus agrees to help Dr. Singh, beginning a dark journey into his origins and his mother Birdie’s (Amy Seimetz) role in the events leading up to The Great Crumble. Outside the Preserve, Tommy Jepperd (Nonso Anozie) and Aimee Eden (Dania Ramirez ) team up to break the hybrids free, a partnership that will be tested as Jepperd’s secrets come to light. As the revelations of the past threaten the possibility of redemption in the present, Gus and his found family find themselves on a collision course with Abbot and the evil forces that look to wipe them out once and for all.

‘Sweet Tooth’ Renewed for Third and Final Season at Netflix

Netflix is pulling its tooth out.

The streaming giant has handed out a third and final season renewal for Sweet Tooth, the Warner Bros. TV drama based on the DC Comics title. In a twist, production on season three of the series from exec producer Robert Downey Jr. and his Team Downey banner has already been completed in New Zealand.

“In a lot of ways, it’s exactly the story that I imagined we would tell and in a lot of ways it takes on its own life,” showrunner and creator Jim Mickle said in a statement Wednesday. “At the beginning, I think you set out to tell these landmark pieces of Gus’ story and the big pieces of the comic book, but the beauty of long-form storytelling and Gus’ journey over 24 episodes is the characters themselves tell you what they want to be. The crew and cast bring so much depth and point of view to who the characters are and where they’ve come from and where they’re going. Season three is an Arctic story with exciting new adventures and what we hope will be a satisfying conclusion to this epic tale. Gus is going to see a side of the world and humanity that he didn’t see in season one or two.”

The sophomore season of Sweet Tooth bowed April 27 and drew more than 48 million hours of viewership during its first four days on Netflix.

Currently on episode 7 of Season 2. Still good, although Season 1 seems better. I'm just quite happy that the series will see a definite conclusion to the story in Season 3.
