House of the Dragon: Game of Thrones Prequel Eyeing 2022 Debut

According to Deadline, HBO president Casey Bloys has confirmed that they’re planning to release their upcoming Game of Thrones prequel series House of the Dragon in 2022 which would be three years after the original series had concluded its eight-season run. Bloys has also revealed that casting is still underway which is actually in line with previous reports back in July where the network was reportedly looking for actresses to portray the series’ female lead characters Rhaenyra Targaryen and Alicent Hightower.

Based on George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood, the series will chronicle the rise and the downfall of the Targaryens, who is the only family of dragonlords to survive the Doom of Valyria. It will take place 300 years before the events of the award-winning series adaptation of Game of Thrones which aired its final episode last May 2019.

House of the Dragon is created by George R.R. Martin and Ryan Condal (Colony). Miguel Sapochnik has also signed on to direct the pilot and additional episodes of the series. Sapochnik and Condal are also set as co-showrunners of the prequel.

First published in 2018, Fire & Blood was released as a companion to A Song of Ice and Fire. The novel begins its tale with the legendary Aegon the Conqueror, creator of the Iron Throne, and goes on to recount the generations of Targaryens who fought to hold that iconic seat, all the way up to the civil war that nearly tore their dynasty apart.

‘Game of Thrones’ Prequel Series ‘House of the Dragon’ Casts Paddy Considine

The “Game of Thrones” prequel series “House of the Dragon” at HBO has found its first cast member — English actor Paddy Considine.

Variety has learned that Considine has signed on to star in the series in the role of King Viserys I, who chosen by the lords of Westeros to succeed the Old King, Jaehaerys Targaryen, at the Great Council at Harrenhal. A warm, kind, and decent man, Viserys only wishes to carry forward his grandfather’s legacy. But good men do not necessarily make for great kings.

Fans of the lore created by George R.R. Martin will recall that Viserys I ruled over Westeros around 100 years after Aegon’s Conquest. His children, Rhaenyra and Aegon II, would ultimately fight a civil war over his throne that became known as the Dance of Dragons.

“House of the Dragon” is set a few hundred years prior to the events of “Game of Thrones” and tells the story of House Targaryen. It is expected to air sometime in 2022.

HBO has given the show a 10-episode order, with casting having begun over the summer.

‘Game of Thrones’ Prequel ‘House of the Dragon’ Adds Matt Smith, Olivia Cooke, Emma D’Arcy

“Game of Thrones” prequel “House of the Dragon” has found more Targaryens.

The HBO series has added three more key players to its cast: Olivia Cooke, Emma D’Arcy and Matt Smith.

Cooke, known from Amazon’s “Sound of Metal,” is set to star as Alicent Hightower, the daughter of Hand of the King Otto Hightower who was raised in the Red Keep, close to the king and his inner circle. Described as “the most comely woman in the Seven Kingdoms,” Hightower has both “courtly grace and a keen political acumen.”

D’Arcy will star as Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, the king’s first-born, pure Valyrian-blooded child who is a dragonrider. Some say Rhaenyra was “born with everything… but she was not born a man.”

Smith is set to play Prince Daemon Targaryen, King Viserys’ younger brother and heir to the throne. Described as a “peerless warrior and a dragonrider, Daemon possesses the true blood of the dragon. But it is said that whenever a Targaryen is born, the gods toss a coin in the air…”

Smith, Cooke and D’Arcy will join Paddy Considine, who was previously announced as King Viserys Targaryen.

Emmy-winning German composer Ramin Djawadi, who was the original composer for Game of Thrones, is officially returning to compose the score for HBO’s prequel spinoff House of the Dragon. For his acclaimed work on the original series, Djawadi earned two Emmy Awards for Outstanding Music Composition.

HBO’s House of the Dragon has rounded out its main cast with the addition of Rhys Ifans, Steve Toussaint, Eve Best and Sonoya Mizuno.

‘Game of Thrones’ Prequel Series ‘House of the Dragon’ at HBO Casts Fabien Frankel

“House of the Dragon,” the “Game of Thrones” prequel series currently in the works at HBO, has added Fabien Frankel to its cast.

Frankel will appear as Ser Criston Cole, of Dornish descent, the common-born son of the steward to the Lord of Blackhaven. Cole has no claim to land or titles; all he has to his name is his honor and his preternatural skill with a sword.

HBO has given “House of the Dragon” a 10-episode order with an eye toward a 2022 debut.

The new Game of Thrones spin-off series House of the Dragon is officially in production.

HBO revealed that the series set in the world of Westeros inspired by George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood novel, has started production this week and will launch on HBO Max in 2022.

The cable network unveiled the news, sharing photos of the cast during a socially distanced table read on Twitter on Monday (April 26).

"Fire will reign. The HBO original series House of the Dragon is officially in production. Coming soon to HBO Max in 2022," the show's social media account posted in a Twitter thread.

HBO’s Game of Thrones Prequel House of the Dragon Wraps Production

Author and executive producer George R.R. Martin confirmed that production on HBO’s forthcoming Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon has finally been completed after ten months of filming throughout Europe.

The prequel is expected to make its debut sometime this year. In addition, Martin continues to express his excitement over the series, teasing that the rough cuts of episodes he had already seen are all “terrific,” in terms of its directing, acting, and writing.

“Exciting news out of London — I am informed that shooting has wrapped for the first season of House of the Dragon. Yes, all ten episodes. I have seen rough cuts of a few of them, and I’m loving them,” Martin said through his personal website. “Of course, a lot more work needs to be done. Special effects, color timing, score, all the post-production work. But the writing, the directing, the acting all look terrific. I hope you will like them as much as I do. My hat is off to Ryan and Miguel and their team, and to our amazing cast.”
