‘Green Lantern’ Series Gets Greenlight at HBO Max

HBO Max has given out a series order to “Green Lantern,” Variety has learned.

Based on the DC Comics property, the show was first announced as being in development last year. Plot details are now available for the first time, however, from HBO Max:

"From HBO Max, DC, Berlanti Productions and Warner Bros. Television comes a bold adaptation of the iconic comic book franchise, a saga spanning decades and galaxies. GREEN LANTERN will depict the adventures of a multitude of Lanterns, including Guy Gardner, Jessica Cruz, Simon Baz and Alan Scott — Earth’s first Green Lantern, who, true to the comics, is a gay man — and many more. The series will also include fan favorites such as Sinestro and Kilowog, and will also introduce new heroes to the ranks of the Green Lantern Corps."

HBO Max has ordered 10 one-hour episodes. The series will be co-written and executive produced by Seth Grahame-Smith and Marc Guggenheim, with Grahame-Smith serving as showrunner. Berlanti Productions will produce in association with Warner Bros. Television, where Berlanti is under a rich overall deal.

While not stated, it's possible HBO Max's parent company Warner Bros. is holding on to the DC characters of Hal Jordan, John Stewart and Kyle Rayner for the Green Lantern feature film previously reported.

From ComingSoon.Net

Report: HBO Max’s Green Lantern Series May Film in April

It’s been several months since HBO Max announced that it was developing a new Green Lantern TV series. And apparently, filming is set to begin sooner than expected.

According to an ad found in Production List, Green Lantern will start shooting in L.A. on April 12. Warner Bros. and DC have been vague about which power ring-wielders will show up on the new series. However, the listing names Guy Gardner, Jessica Cruz, Simon Baz and Alan Scott as characters.

Seth Grahame-Smith, who was once in line to direct WB’s The Flash film, is showrunning Green Lantern. He’s writing the series alongside Arrowverse vet Marc Guggenheim, who also co-wrote the 2011 movie. Although the show takes place in a separate continuity from the Arrowverse, Greg Berlanti is onboard the project as a producer.

HBO Max has already given the series a 10-episode order. Regardless, the streaming service still hasn’t announced a release date. And if filming really is six weeks away, we can probably assume that the casting process has already begun.

Finn Wittrock To Headline ‘Green Lantern’ HBO Max Series As Guy Gardner

Finn Wittrock (American Horror Story) has been tapped to star as Guy Gardner/Green Lantern in HBO Max’s upcoming series based on the DC characters, from Berlanti Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television.

Written by Greg Berlanti, Marc Guggenheim and Seth Grahame-Smith, Green Lantern reinvents the classic DC property through a story spanning decades and galaxies, beginning on Earth in 1941 with the very first Green Lantern, secretly gay FBI agent Alan Scott, and 1984, with cocky alpha male Guy Gardner (Wittrock) and half-alien Bree Jarta. They’ll be joined by a multitude of other Lanterns — from comic book favorites to never-before-seen heroes.

Wittrock’s Guy Gardner/Green Lantern is a hulking mass of masculinity, and, as rendered in the comics, an embodiment of 1980s hyper-patriotism. And yet, Guy is somehow likable.

^  I don't see Guy Gardner as a "pretty boy" type. And they've gotta give him the classic bowl cut hair.

So Warner doesn't want the producers to use Hal Jordan and John Stewart.  Probably the same scenario when Snyder wanted to use Stewart.

^ I think WB is reserving Hal Jordan, Jon Stewart and Kyle Rayner for the big screen adaptation (or reboot if you will) of the Green Lantern franchise. Looks like the HBO Max series intends to tell the history of the GL Corps - possibly to set the stage for the movie version.

‘Green Lantern’: Jeremy Irvine in Talks to Join HBO Max Series as Gay Hero Alan Scott

HBO Max’s Green Lantern has zeroed in on an actor to play Alan Scott, with Jeremy Irvine, who led the Bourne TV spinoff Treadstone, in talks for the role of the comic book hero.

Scott is one of the higher-profile gay characters in the DC Universe, although that is only a relatively recent development. He was created in 1940 with his ring being magical in nature. When Green Lantern was re-developed in the 1960s, it was against a sci-fi backdrop and the hero, Hal Jordan, was a test pilot in the Atomic Age. Eventually, Scott was re-introduced as a Lantern from a parallel Earth and in the 2000s. With the flourishing of the multiverse concept, he was reconceived as gay, leading a more inclusive movement at the publisher.

From viewing Superman and Lois, the choice of director is a good one

‘Green Lantern’ HBO Max Series to be Redeveloped

HBO Max’s long-gestating Green Lantern TV series is changing gears.

The drama, which has been in the works since late 2019, will now focus on John Stewart, one of DC’s first Black superheroes. The series, from exec producer Greg Berlanti, was to originally have revolved around Guy Gardner and Alan Scott and had already cast Finn Wittrock (Ratched) and Jeremy Irvine (Treadstone) as the respective Green Lanterns.

As part of the creative overhaul, writer and showrunner Seth Grahame-Smith has departed the series after completing scripts for a full season of eight episodes. Sources say Grahame-Smith, who signed on as writer and showrunner a year after Green Lantern was announced, chose to leave the project after weathering a number of regime changes at HBO Max, its parent company Warner Bros. Discovery, producers Warner Bros. Television, and now DC Comics.

New Green Lantern TV Show in the Works from James Gunn, Peter Safran

The Green Lantern TV series is dead. Long live the Green Lantern series.

After years of development and redevelopment, an HBO Max series based on the DC superheroes from Greg Berlanti, the longtime steward of DC’s TV shows, has been scrapped. In its place, a new series is being developed, titled Lanterns, which is acting as a foundational show under the plans from newly installed DC Studios heads, James Gunn and Peter Safran.

“Greg’s vision was more of a space opera that he wanted to do,” said Safran during a presentation of the new DC slate on the Warner Bros. Studios lot Monday. “Our vision is more True Detective, more of a terrestrial-based investigation story. We all agreed to part ways.”
