Fan Girl (Antoinette Jadaone) **** - A teenage girl obsessed with famous Filipino actor Paulo Avelino (who plays himself) stows away in his pick up truck then proceeds to discover who he really is: A troubled, vaguely creepy and deeply, deeply flawed human being dealing with his own demons and toxicity. This is by far my favorite Filipino film of the year so far. It remarkably dismantles both celebrity culture and worship as well as the Filipino brand of toxic masculinity in one fell swoop. Paulo Avelino is outstanding and not to mention brave in completely destroying his public persona, playing a (hopefully) fictional version of himself. Newcomer Charlie Dizon is a revelation as the girl. Writer-director Antoinette Jadaone has been making a name for herself making romantic-comedies (And good ones at that). This is by far her darkest film and she does it quite brilliantly. Highly recommended.
