dark, dull, and laid back is the end goal
« on: Oct 06, 2020 at 01:32 PM »
on speaker wires:
for speakers as bright, forward,  and shouty as Klipsch RP series, what speaker cables are most appropriate to make it sound laidback, dull, and dark.

on integrated amplifiers:
i know tubes are the way to go but i have limited my options to solid state integrated amps...which one has the most laid back, darkest sound signature? marantz, roksan, simaudio, arcam, exposure, yamaha...anything else?

inputs are greatly appreciated.

Notch Filter centered around 1Kh with 3dB attenuation. it is a capacitor/resistor/coil network that you  connect between positive and negative terminals, this will tame the mids and provide that laidback sound.

DIY or is there an off-the-shelf solution?  are these the same nodes found prior the speaker side termination of some "hi-end" speaker cables.?

I had mine made by Anthony Audio.  What I did was identify the offending frequency range, I used an equalizer to set the sound that I like and once I have identified the range and attenuation,  I searched the net for values of the coil, resistor and caps that would mimic that EQ setting.

If it is a 3 way speaker, Try an L-pad on the midrange.  L-pad is just 2 resistors, easy to make and just connect it across the mids terminals

It happened to me before a certain b&w speaker it was bright i keep on changing speaker stands, redid room acoustics, change a lot of cables, change preamp and power amp yet its still sounding bright so i sold it and change to a different speaker the bright sounding was gone

found a good, effective, and inexpensive solution.
ive managed to change the speaker jumper wires from the stock plates into a stranded Cu wire of known laidback signature sound and that did the trick specific for the sound of the tweeters exclusively.

So the stock speaker links sound more brighter, more dynamic, and more forward than the aftermarket jumper you used? Interesting.

exactly. the one i used is a tried and tested, good partner with Klipsch speakers so i suppose they are, inherently, dark, dull, and laidback.....and they are :)

the problem actually is that it became too dark and laidback that i need to connect the speaker cables from the amps going into the HF speaker terminals (instead of LF or alternately)

Hi Cal. Its a monitor audio driven by cambridge audio. Your work connected to the Hf terminals with the ecosse as links to the Lf is so far the best bet.

As soon as my banana plugs arrive, ill be able to run a longer length of ecosse from d amp to the hf speaker terminals... And compare.
